Yes—you can connect an MCP browser server to Microsoft Edge. The most practical choices are to let the server launch a separate Edge instance, or attach it to an Edge window that is already running. Use a fresh instance for isolation and repeatability; use auto-connect only when you need an existing signed-in session and trust the agent with that profile’s data.
What you need before connecting Edge
- Node.js (latest LTS) and npm.
- Microsoft Edge Stable, Beta, Dev or Canary.
- An MCP-capable coding agent or other MCP client.
- The MCP server package supported by your client. Configuration names differ between servers, so treat Microsoft’s Chrome DevTools MCP examples and Playwright MCP examples as separate syntaxes.
Microsoft states that its Chrome DevTools MCP server supports Chromium browsers, including Edge and WebView2. Edge automation can also use the DevTools Protocol, Playwright, Puppeteer or WebDriver; the correct choice depends on whether you need low-level inspection, cross-browser testing, a higher-level DevTools API or user-interaction simulation.
Choose an Edge connection model

Option A: let the MCP server launch Edge
This is the safest default for development because the server can use a dedicated profile and does not need access to your everyday browser state.
- Find the installed Edge executable for the channel you intend to use. Stable, Beta, Dev and Canary have different paths, and paths vary by operating system.
- In your MCP client configuration, add the server and pass
--executablePathwith that full path. - On Windows JSON configuration, escape each backslash (for example,
C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe). - Restart the MCP client, then ask the agent to open a harmless page and report its title. This confirms that the server launched the expected browser.
A generic command shape is:

Use a dedicated profile for repeatable runs
If your server supports a user-data-directory argument, point it at a new directory reserved for automation. A clean profile prevents personal cookies, extensions and saved payment or account data from becoming available to the agent. Seed only the test accounts and extensions that the workflow requires.
Option B: auto-connect to an Edge instance
Auto-connect attaches to a browser that is already running. It is useful for debugging a page in a real session, but it has materially greater privacy risk.
- Close the Edge instance you plan to control, or start a separate instance with a dedicated profile.
- Enable remote debugging. Microsoft documents starting Edge with
--remote-debugging-port=9222; Edge also exposes remote-debugging controls throughedge://inspect. - Start Edge with the user-data directory for the exact channel and profile you want to attach to.
- Configure the MCP server with
--autoConnectand the matching--user-data-dir. - Start the server and have the client inspect a non-sensitive page first.

If the file is missing, the server cannot discover the running browser even when Edge appears open.

Profile locations and channel matching
Microsoft documents sample profile paths for Windows, macOS and Linux. Use the path belonging to the channel you launched; a Stable profile path will not work if you started Dev. Verify the path on the machine rather than relying on a copied example. Never point automation at your everyday profile unless the agent is fully trusted.
What auto-connect can expose
An attached agent can potentially access logged-in accounts, cookies and other information available through page JavaScript. Give the agent narrowly scoped prompts, avoid opening banking or administrative tabs, and stop the browser when the task ends. Treat the remote-debugging port as a powerful local control interface, not as a normal web-service port.

These are Playwright project instructions, so your MCP client’s JSON keys may differ from Microsoft’s Chrome DevTools MCP examples. Check which transport your client expects before changing configuration. Also confirm which tools are enabled: Playwright documentation warns that a tool capable of running arbitrary JavaScript in the server process is equivalent to remote code execution and should be enabled only for trusted MCP clients.
WebView2-specific setup
For WebView2, verify that the registry key identifies the correct host executable. Restart the host after adding browser arguments, and use the documented EBWebView user-data-directory suffix. A mismatch between the registry entry, host process and profile directory prevents discovery even when ordinary Edge automation works.

Microsoft’s managed Playwright Workspaces remote MCP service can provide a hosted session, but its documentation marks it preview. Microsoft says preview features do not include a service-level agreement and are not recommended for production workloads. Microsoft recommends Microsoft Entra ID authentication. Workspace access tokens are less secure, disabled by default, and must be treated like passwords: never commit them, put them in prompts or write them to logs.

Troubleshooting Edge MCP connections
“Could not connect to Chrome” during auto-connect
- Confirm Edge is running with remote debugging enabled.
- Check that
--user-data-diris the profile directory for the channel you launched. - Verify that
DevToolsActivePortexists in that directory and is readable by the MCP process. - Ensure no other Edge process is locking the profile; retry with a dedicated profile.
Edge is not found
Check that --executablePath points to an existing binary. On Windows, escape backslashes in JSON. Confirm that you did not select a Stable path while intending to run Beta, Dev or Canary.
CDP connection refused
Make sure the debugging port is listening on the address you configured, that Edge was started with the port argument, and that local security software is not blocking it. A CDP URL for one browser instance cannot attach to a different profile.
WebView2 will not connect
Recheck the registry key against the host executable, restart the host after changing browser arguments, and use the required EBWebView suffix in the user-data path.

The agent opens the wrong account or tab
Stop using the everyday profile. Launch a named automation profile, close unrelated tabs, and make the prompt specify the target page and permitted actions. Extension mode and auto-connect intentionally reuse existing session state, so this behavior is expected when the wrong profile is selected.
Operational and security checklist
- Prefer a newly launched, isolated profile for unattended jobs.
- Use auto-connect only with a trusted agent and non-sensitive prompts.
- Keep remote debugging local; do not expose the debugging port to a network.
- Review MCP tool permissions, especially JavaScript execution.
- Use Entra ID for managed Workspaces and protect tokens like passwords.
- Record which Edge channel, profile directory, transport and MCP server version each project uses.
