You do not install Chrome Headless as a separate Windows application. Install Google Chrome normally, then start its executable with the --headless flag. The quickest test is start chrome --headless in Command Prompt. Current Chrome uses the integrated Headless implementation; the older implementation is available separately as chrome-headless-shell when a test specifically requires it.
What Chrome Headless is on Windows
Headless is a Chrome operating mode that runs without displaying the browser window. The same installed Chrome binary can parse pages, execute JavaScript, render a viewport, create screenshots and print PDFs while remaining unattended. There is no standard “Chrome Headless” installer to download alongside Chrome.
That distinction matters when troubleshooting: an installation problem is usually a normal Chrome installation or Windows PATH problem, while a capture problem is usually a command-line flag, page-loading, timing or permissions issue.
Check Windows and hardware requirements
Google’s current Chrome requirements are:

Use a supported, up-to-date Chrome installation. Headless mode inherits Chrome’s ability to reach the target site, so corporate proxies, firewalls, authentication and certificate policies still apply.

Install Chrome normally
- Download the Chrome installation file from Google’s official Chrome download page.
- Run the installer. Accept the Windows run and permission prompts if they appear.
- Wait for setup to finish, then open Chrome once from the Start menu. Opening it once confirms that the installation completed and lets Chrome finish any first-run setup.
- Close the visible Chrome window before testing headless mode. A separate visible session is not normally required, but closing it makes the first command easier to diagnose.
Do not assume one universal installation path. Chrome’s executable location can differ by Windows account, installation method and policy. If the chrome alias is unavailable, locate chrome.exe with File Explorer and use its full quoted path.
Run your first headless command
Open Command Prompt (not a browser address bar) and run:
start chrome --headlessThis launches Chrome without its visible user interface. The command may return to the prompt immediately because Windows starts the process separately; that is expected. To run a task that produces a file or console output, use one of the commands below.
Use Headless for common tasks
Inspect the rendered DOM
--dump-dom serializes the DOM after Chrome has parsed the document and run page scripts. Redirect the result to a file when you need to inspect it:

Use --print-to-pdf to create output.pdf:

Combine only the controls you need. For example:
chrome --headless --window-size=1366,768 --timeout=15000 --virtual-time-budget=3000 --screenshot https://example.comDo not automatically add old flags such as --disable-gpu. Current integrated Headless does not require that flag for ordinary captures; add special switches only when a specific compatibility diagnosis calls for them.

Integrated Headless versus chrome-headless-shell
Chrome 112 introduced the updated Headless implementation that runs Chrome itself while suppressing the visible UI. From Chrome 132, both --headless and --headless=new select that implementation. --headless=old no longer starts the old mode in the main Chrome binary.

Troubleshoot common failures
“’chrome’ is not recognized”
Windows cannot find the Chrome executable through its command alias or PATH. Find chrome.exe in File Explorer and quote the complete path:
start "" "C:PathTochrome.exe" --headless --screenshot https://example.comThe empty title argument after start prevents a quoted path from being interpreted as the window title.

No output file appears
Chrome writes screenshot.png and the default PDF to the current working directory, not necessarily your Downloads folder. Run cd C:desiredfolder before the command, or provide an explicit PDF filename such as --print-to-pdf=report.pdf. Also confirm that the process has permission to write that directory.

Headless captures the page state available when the task runs. Client-rendered pages, delayed API calls and animations may need a larger --timeout or a --virtual-time-budget. A longer wait cannot fix a site that requires interactive authentication, blocks automation or fails to load because of network policy.
The command hangs
Set an explicit timeout, verify the URL from the same Windows account, and check proxy, DNS, firewall and certificate settings. Test a simple public page first to separate Chrome problems from target-site problems.
A chrome:// page will not open
Use --allow-chrome-scheme-url; Google documents this switch for Chrome 123 and later. Ordinary HTTP and HTTPS pages do not need it.
A legacy tutorial behaves differently
Check the installed Chrome version. Instructions that use --headless=old describe an implementation removed from the main binary in Chrome 132. Use integrated --headless, or install the separately distributed shell if the old behavior is an explicit requirement.

Operational advice for repeatable captures
- Pin the viewport with
--window-sizeso responsive breakpoints do not change between runs. - Use an explicit timeout and virtual-time budget rather than relying on an uncontrolled page wait.
- Write outputs to a known working directory and give PDFs explicit filenames.
- Keep the Chrome version aligned with the environment being tested; command-line behavior can change between releases.
- Do not treat a successful process exit as proof that the page was useful. Inspect the DOM, image or PDF for login screens, consent overlays, empty content and blocked resources.
