To improve wkhtmltoimage output, set the capture width first, then adjust zoom for the rendered scale, choose an appropriate image format, and wait for JavaScript-driven content to finish loading. Use --quality to tune lossy image encoding—not as a resolution control. For a repeatable capture, compare the resulting pixel dimensions and page contents after each change.

What each quality setting actually changes

There is no single resolution switch. The output depends on several independent choices: the page’s viewport width and layout, the rendered scale, whether content finished loading, which visual elements were included, and the output encoder.

Setting or factor What it affects When to adjust it
--quality Image encoding quality from 0 to 100, as documented by Debian Manpages for the wkhtmltopdf 0.12-era toolchain. When writing a lossy image format and balancing visible compression against file size. It does not increase capture dimensions.
--width The screen-width guide used to lay out the page. When the page wraps incorrectly or the capture needs to match a particular viewport.
--disable-smart-width Makes the chosen width strict rather than allowing smart width to extend it to fit unbreakable content. When you need a fixed, reproducible viewport and can address overflowing content in CSS.
--zoom The rendered scale of page content. When you need larger rendered pixels; check the final dimensions because scaling changes effective output size.
--javascript-delay or --window-status How long capture waits for client-side content or a page-defined readiness state. When scripts or asynchronous content are missing from the image.

The command-line options and their meanings are documented in the Debian Manpages wkhtmltoimage reference. The library exposes related settings such as load.zoomFactor, load.jsdelay, web.loadImages, web.background, and web.userStyleSheet in the libwkhtmltox page settings reference.

Set the viewport before tuning sharpness

Start with the CSS/layout width the page is meant to have. The --width option is a screen-width guide: it influences wrapping and layout, not just the number of pixels in the saved file. A page captured at a narrow width may rearrange into a mobile layout; enlarging its output afterward cannot restore a desktop layout.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Smart width may expand the effective width to accommodate content that cannot break, such as a long unwrapped string or wide element. If you need a fixed width, use --disable-smart-width. That can make overflow more visible, so also fix the page’s CSS where appropriate—for example, allow long text to wrap or constrain an oversized element.

For repeatable comparisons, keep the viewport width and other capture settings constant. Change one variable at a time and inspect both the image and its dimensions.

Use zoom to change rendered scale

Use --zoom <float> to scale rendered page content; the library equivalent is load.zoomFactor. Zoom can make text and graphics occupy more output pixels, but it also changes the effective rendered size and may affect what fits in the capture. It is not a substitute for choosing the intended layout width.

After changing zoom, check the actual pixel dimensions and confirm that the image still contains the intended page area. There is no universally correct zoom value: the appropriate setting depends on the target dimensions and page.

Choose a format and set lossy quality deliberately

The library reference lists jpg, png, bmp, and svg as image formats. Choose according to the content and where the file will be used. For a format whose encoder supports a quality value, --quality accepts an integer from 0 to 100 in the man page. A higher value generally prioritizes retaining image detail over reducing lossy compression, but the setting does not add pixels or correct a poor layout.

  • For a lossy output such as JPEG, adjust quality when compression artifacts are visible or file size needs to be reduced.
  • For formats that do not use that quality scale in the same way, do not assume the option improves fidelity; choose the format for its intended use.
  • Compare the final file size and visual result at the dimensions you actually need.

Ensure the page is visually complete

Missing images or backgrounds are often loading or rendering configuration problems rather than image-quality problems. Image loading is enabled by default in the documented CLI, but verify it has not been disabled. The library setting is web.loadImages. Background rendering is controlled by web.background; check that it is enabled when the design relies on CSS backgrounds.

If a page needs capture-specific corrections, provide a user stylesheet with web.userStyleSheet. This can help adjust layout or visibility for the capture without changing the live site. Check the resulting image to ensure the stylesheet has not hidden content or altered the intended layout.

Wait for JavaScript and asynchronous content

JavaScript is enabled by default in the documented command-line tool. Pages that populate content after initial load may still need additional time. Use --javascript-delay to wait after page load; the library equivalent is load.jsdelay. Increase the delay only as much as the page needs, then check whether the missing content appears reliably.

When the page can signal that it is ready, --window-status can wait for a page-defined status value instead of relying only on a fixed delay. For example, an application can set its window status to render-ready after the relevant content has been prepared:

wkhtmltoimage
  --width 1440
  --window-status render-ready
  https://example.com page.png

The status value must be produced by the page; using this option does not create a readiness signal automatically.

Example: fixed viewport, delayed content, JPEG quality

This command combines a strict 1440-pixel viewport, a zoom factor of 1.25, a 1,200-millisecond JavaScript delay, and JPEG quality 95:

wkhtmltoimage
  --width 1440
  --disable-smart-width
  --zoom 1.25
  --javascript-delay 1200
  --quality 95
  https://example.com page.jpg

These are example values, not universal recommendations. Tune them against the page and the required output dimensions. If the page still looks wrong, diagnose layout, loading, and format separately rather than raising quality alone.

How to troubleshoot common output problems

  • The image looks blurry. Check the saved dimensions and viewport first. If the layout is correct but rendered details need more pixels, try an appropriate zoom factor and inspect the new dimensions. For a lossy format, adjust --quality if compression artifacts—not insufficient dimensions—are the issue.
  • The page is cropped or unexpectedly wide. Set --width to the intended viewport. If unbreakable content is expanding the capture, add --disable-smart-width and correct wrapping or overflow in the page CSS.
  • Images are missing. Confirm image loading is enabled, check that the page has had time to load its images, and verify the image URLs are accessible to the renderer.
  • CSS backgrounds are absent. Ensure background rendering is enabled through the relevant web setting, web.background.
  • JavaScript content is missing. Keep JavaScript enabled, increase --javascript-delay or load.jsdelay as needed, or wait for an application-defined readiness value with --window-status.
  • Changing quality has no noticeable effect. Confirm the output format uses lossy quality encoding and compare file size and artifacts. Quality does not control viewport width or output resolution.
  • Results vary between runs. Keep width, zoom, format, and waiting behavior constant. Prefer a page readiness signal when one is available, and compare dimensions, layout fidelity, loaded content, and file size across runs.

Do not use smart shrinking as an image fix

The libwkhtmltox reference says intelligent shrinking has no effect for wkhtmltoimage. For image output, use width and zoom controls instead. Smart width and intelligent shrinking are distinct concepts: --disable-smart-width controls whether the viewport width can expand to fit unbreakable content; it is not an image sharpening option.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to capture a page rather than tune a local renderer, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, save a screenshot as WebP with cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options. Its capture can accept cookie or consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does wkhtmltoimage’s –quality option control?

It sets image output quality on a 0–100 scale in the documented man page; it is an encoder setting, not a resolution control.

Does intelligent shrinking improve wkhtmltoimage images?

No. The libwkhtmltox reference says intelligent shrinking has no effect for wkhtmltoimage; use width and zoom controls for image output.

Can I wait for a page to finish rendering instead of choosing a fixed delay?

Yes. Use –window-status with a readiness value that the page itself sets when its relevant content is ready.
