BrowserStack visual regression testing is provided by Percy. Percy captures a page or mobile-app screen, compares it with an approved baseline, and shows visual differences for a person to review. A diff is evidence of a rendering change—not proof of a bug. Your team must decide whether the change is an intended design update or a regression.
This guide explains the baseline workflow, web and mobile coverage, integration choices, usage planning, review practices, and troubleshooting using BrowserStack’s current documentation.
How Percy visual regression testing works
Percy turns visual checks into a repeating baseline cycle:
- Create a Percy project and capture an initial build. Because there is no previous approved version, the first build establishes the baseline.
- Capture later builds. Percy compares each snapshot with the current baseline and marks changed regions.
- Review every difference. Approve intentional changes to promote them to the baseline. Leave real regressions unapproved, fix the implementation, and run the test again.
The comparison is screenshot-based. Functional tests can verify that a button works; Percy verifies that the rendered pixels remain within the visual expectation. BrowserStack describes this workflow in its visual-testing basics documentation.

What a snapshot and build mean
A build is a test-run grouping. A displayed snapshot can contain several browser or responsive-width renderings, but billing counts the individual screenshots used for those renderings. This distinction is important when forecasting usage.
Why human review remains necessary
Text changes, new content, font loading, animation timing, and responsive reflow can all create a diff. Percy highlights the change; a reviewer determines whether it is acceptable. Approving without checking can turn a defect into the new baseline.
Choose web Percy or App Percy

For web projects, Percy can compare selected browser and width combinations. Different browser engines may produce legitimate rendering differences, so browser-specific comparisons can expose regressions that a single browser misses. For native applications, App Percy compares screens across device and OS combinations; BrowserStack recommends using the BrowserStack SDK as a simplified integration path, while a Percy SDK is also available. Select an integration path
Automation and SDK integration
Use a Percy SDK or BrowserStack SDK when you already have automated tests and a CI/CD pipeline. The test navigates to the state you want to protect, captures a Percy snapshot, and lets the build report return to your source-control review process. This approach gives you repeatable setup, test data, authentication handling, and a natural place to fail or review a build.
BrowserStack documents multiple SDK approaches rather than one universal command because the setup depends on your test framework and language. Start with the Percy integration options page, select your framework, create a Percy project, and add the project token as a CI secret instead of committing it to the repository.
No-script or CLI onboarding
The no-script path is useful for a static site, a quick proof of concept, or an ad-hoc set of URLs. It lets you evaluate the review experience before modifying a test suite. It has less control than an integrated test over login state, dynamic data, and precise test sequencing, so move to an SDK integration when the check becomes part of release quality.

Combine functional and visual execution
Teams already using BrowserStack Automate can decide whether BrowserStack should execute the cross-browser test and Percy should manage the visual comparison, or whether Percy-managed browser choices are sufficient. The correct choice depends on where your functional tests run, which browsers you must certify, and how you want failures represented in CI.
Design a useful coverage matrix
Do not select every possible permutation by default. Each browser, width, or device adds screenshot usage and increases the number of differences a reviewer may need to assess.
Web matrix
- Choose browsers that your users and support policy require.
- Choose representative responsive widths, including breakpoints where layout changes.
- Use full-page captures when content below the fold matters; verify that lazy-loaded images are included.
- Prefer Percy’s Recommended match level as a starting point, then adjust for known page noise and animation.
For example, two pages across two browsers and three widths produce 12 individual screenshots, according to BrowserStack’s billing example. A page that displays as one grouped snapshot can therefore consume several screenshot units.
Mobile matrix
- Start with the devices that represent your supported user base and highest-risk layouts.
- Add OS versions when platform rendering differences affect the UI.
- Expand coverage for navigation, checkout, onboarding, and other screens where a small visual defect has a high user cost.
App Percy explains that one snapshot across three devices counts as three usage units. Treat the matrix as a risk decision, not a race to maximize device count.
Control visual noise before approving changes
Unstable captures create review fatigue. Make the page deterministic before taking a snapshot:
- Wait for fonts, images, and API data to finish loading.
- Disable or freeze animations, carousels, clocks, random IDs, and rotating promotions.
- Use stable test data and a fixed authentication state.
- Capture the same scroll position and viewport each run.
- Separate intentional content updates from layout assertions when the content changes frequently.
BrowserStack recommends full-page screenshots and its Recommended match level, but those are vendor recommendations rather than a guarantee for every application. A long, highly dynamic page may require narrower captures or targeted regions to keep signal high. Guidance is available in the recommended guidelines.

Review and baseline-management workflow
- Open the Percy build associated with the pull request or commit.
- Filter to changed snapshots and inspect each highlighted region at a useful zoom.
- Check whether the difference is caused by the intended code change, test data, browser behavior, or capture instability.
- Approve only intentional changes. Approval promotes the reviewed snapshot to the baseline.
- For a regression, reject or leave the snapshot unapproved, fix the code, and rerun the build.
- Record why a change was approved when the reason is not obvious from the pull request.
BrowserStack describes both Git-oriented and Visual Git baseline-management preferences. Choose the model your team can review consistently, and protect baseline changes with the same access controls used for production-facing code.

See Percy plans and billing and App Percy plans and billing for current plan quantities and overage treatment. Estimate consumption as:
pages or screens × browsers or devices × widths × builds.
Then add reruns caused by flaky tests and branch builds. A smaller, risk-based matrix is often more sustainable than running every permutation on every commit; schedule broader coverage for release candidates if that matches your risk tolerance.
Common problems and fixes
Every snapshot is different
Likely causes: animations, timestamps, random data, late fonts, or asynchronous requests. Fix: freeze dynamic values, wait for a stable selector or network idle in your test, and use deterministic fixtures.

Images are missing below the fold
Likely cause: lazy loading has not been triggered before capture. Fix: use a full-page capture strategy that loads lazy images, or scroll through the page in setup before taking the snapshot.
A browser shows differences that others do not
Likely causes: engine-specific font metrics, CSS support, or rendering behavior. Fix: confirm that the difference is reproducible, inspect computed styles and loaded fonts, then decide whether the browser-specific result is an actual supported-browser defect.

This is expected: the first build establishes the baseline. Run a second build after the page or app state is stable.
Usage is higher than expected
Count individual browser, width, and device renderings rather than the number of grouped snapshots shown in the UI. Review branch builds and reruns, then reduce redundant permutations.
Reviewers approve changes too quickly
Require a pull-request owner or designated visual reviewer to inspect each changed region. A diff is a review signal, not an automatic defect classification.

When Percy is the better fit
Choose Percy when visual checks must live inside an existing automated web or mobile test process, when reviewers need baseline approval tied to source-control changes, or when you need a deliberate browser, width, device, and OS matrix. Choose a simple screenshot API when the requirement is producing clean reference images or PDFs rather than maintaining an approved regression baseline.

Review the changed regions in the Percy interface and use your team’s approval policy; baseline promotion should represent an intentional, reviewed state rather than an unexamined pixel change.
How often should the browser or device matrix change?
Revisit it when your support policy, analytics, major UI architecture, or user geography changes. Keep the matrix tied to risk and supported environments.
