A screenshot compares rendered pixels; an ARIA snapshot compares roles, accessible names, states, and text. They solve different regression problems and can be used together when both appearance and accessibility matter.
What Playwright means by “snapshot”
Playwright uses “snapshot” for several artifacts. In this comparison, the practical choice is between a visual screenshot assertion and an ARIA snapshot assertion. Generic toMatchSnapshot() can compare text, JSON, buffers, and other values, but it is not the same as either an image comparison or an accessibility-tree comparison.
- Visual screenshot:
expect(page).toHaveScreenshot()captures a page or locator and compares the resulting image with a reference file. See Playwright’s visual-comparison documentation. - ARIA snapshot:
expect(page).toMatchAriaSnapshot()serializes the accessible structure as YAML-like content and compares it with a supplied template. It can target a whole page or a locator; the API is documented in Playwright’s ARIA snapshot guide. - Focused assertion: Assertions such as
toHaveText(),toHaveValue(), and role checks verify one behavior or value without storing a complete page representation. Playwright lists these in its assertions guide.
The safest general rule is to assert the smallest representation that expresses the requirement. A visual change should fail a screenshot assertion; a semantic or accessible-structure change should fail an ARIA snapshot; one known value usually deserves a focused assertion.
Screenshot assertions: protect rendered appearance
What a screenshot catches
A screenshot assertion is appropriate for layout, spacing, typography, colors, borders, responsive composition, and imagery. You can capture an entire page or a stable component locator with the Playwright Test runner:

});On a first run without a reference, Playwright writes the expected image. Subsequent runs compare the new capture with that file. Playwright documents PNG as the default and supports lossless WebP when the snapshot filename ends in .webp. Snapshot paths can also be affected by project configuration and path templates; the TestProject API documents those settings.
How Playwright reduces capture noise
The screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive captures to be identical before comparing the final image. Its documented default disables animations for the capture: finite animations are fast-forwarded and infinite animations are canceled temporarily, then resumed. These measures reduce transient differences, but they cannot make two different operating systems or browser builds identical.
Visual baseline discipline
Rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Run baseline generation and comparisons in a consistent environment, ideally the same CI image and browser version. Keep snapshot files in version control. When an intentional UI change is ready, update references with:
npx playwright test --update-snapshotsReview every changed image against the intended product change before committing it. A changed image is evidence to inspect, not an automatic approval.

ARIA snapshots: protect accessible structure
What an ARIA snapshot catches
An ARIA snapshot represents the browser’s accessibility tree rather than pixels. It can detect a button becoming a link, a heading changing level, an accessible name disappearing, a list gaining or losing items, or visible text no longer being exposed correctly to assistive technology.

});Scope the assertion to a meaningful locator instead of snapshotting an entire application when only one region is under contract. Smaller templates produce diffs that are easier to review. Updating ARIA expectations
ARIA snapshots participate in the same update-snapshots workflow. Playwright can generate reviewable patch files by default. Use the update command only after confirming that the accessible change is intentional; otherwise, fix the page or test rather than accepting the new tree.

When to combine both snapshots
Use both assertions for components where a visual regression and a semantic regression would each be serious: a checkout form, a modal dialog, a data table, or a navigation shell. Keep the assertions independent so a failure tells you which contract changed.

The screenshot fails only on CI
Cause: Different operating-system fonts, browser versions, hardware, device scale, settings, or headless behavior alter pixels.
Fix: Pin the browser and execution image, use the same viewport and settings, and regenerate baselines in that controlled environment. Do not update snapshots merely to silence a platform-specific diff.
The screenshot contains a moving cursor, animation, or changing data
Cause: The page is not deterministic at capture time.

Fix: Let Playwright’s animation handling do its work, then remove remaining nondeterminism in the test: seed or mock changing data, wait for the relevant content, and capture a stable locator instead of the entire page where possible.
An ARIA snapshot diff is unexpectedly large
Cause: The assertion is scoped too broadly, or a structural change affected many descendants.
Fix: Target the smallest region that expresses the requirement and write a focused ARIA template. If the broad structure is genuinely contractual, review the complete diff rather than weakening the assertion.
The ARIA snapshot misses a visible element
Cause: A visible element may be hidden from the accessibility tree, lack an accessible name, or be represented differently from its visual appearance.
Fix: Inspect the element’s role and name with role-based locators, then correct the page semantics. An ARIA snapshot is not a visual inventory; pair it with a screenshot when appearance also matters.
The test has no baseline
Cause: The first screenshot run creates the reference rather than comparing against one.

Fix: Treat the generated file as a proposed baseline, inspect it, and commit it only when it represents the intended state. The same review principle applies to generated ARIA expectations.
The assertion method is unavailable
Cause: Screenshot assertions are provided by the Playwright Test runner, not by an arbitrary browser automation script. The relevant methods are part of Playwright’s page and locator assertion APIs; see PageAssertions and LocatorAssertions.
Fix: Run the test through @playwright/test and import test and expect from that package.
Performance, review, and maintenance choices
- Capture the smallest useful scope. A component screenshot or regional ARIA snapshot usually creates a smaller artifact and a more local failure than a full-page assertion.
- Wait for the state you mean to protect. Navigate, authenticate, and wait for a selector or stable content before taking either snapshot.
- Separate contracts. Keep visual and accessibility assertions as separate lines so reviewers can identify the failing contract immediately.
- Review updates as code. Store images and ARIA templates with the test, inspect diffs in pull requests, and update them only for intentional product changes.
- Prefer focused assertions for narrow requirements. They generally communicate intent more directly than a large snapshot.
