To make browsing darker on Android, start with Chrome’s own theme: open Chrome, tap More (the three dots), choose Settings > Theme, and select Dark. Choose System Default if Chrome should follow Android’s dark theme or Battery Saver. This darkens Chrome’s interface and some pages, but it does not guarantee that every website will change from white to dark.
Android’s device theme, Google Search’s appearance setting, and an individual website’s theme control are separate. Use the control that matches what you want to change.

How to turn on dark mode in Chrome for Android
- Open the Chrome app on your Android phone or tablet.
- Tap More, the three-dot button in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Theme.
- Choose one of the available options:
- Dark keeps Chrome in its dark theme.
- System Default follows Android’s dark theme or turns dark while Battery Saver is active.
- Light keeps Chrome’s browser theme light.
After selecting Dark, Chrome’s own controls should change immediately. Its documented scope includes the homepage, toolbar, settings and some other pages. A site opened in a tab can still use its own colors, because the page author may not provide dark styling or may not honor the browser’s preferred color scheme.
Dark versus System Default
Use Dark when you want Chrome dark regardless of the phone’s current setting. Use System Default when Chrome should switch with Android’s theme or Battery Saver. These choices affect Chrome’s theme; neither is a universal “make every website dark” command.

Turn on Android’s system dark theme
- Open the Android Settings app.
- Tap Display.
- Turn on Dark theme.
Exact labels and locations can differ between Android manufacturers and customized interfaces. On some phones, you can also add a Dark theme tile to Quick Settings. Once enabled, compatible system surfaces and apps can follow the darker appearance. If Chrome is set to System Default, it will follow this choice.
System dark mode cannot guarantee a dark web page. A website can remain light when it has no dark design, explicitly opts out, or uses colors that do not respond to the device preference.
Make Google Search pages dark
Google Search has its own appearance control. If the Google homepage or results remain white while other parts of Chrome are dark:
- Open Google in your mobile browser.
- Tap More.
- Tap Settings.
- Find Appearance.
- Select Dark theme, Device default, or Light theme.
Dark theme explicitly keeps Search pages dark. Device default follows Android’s current theme. For a signed-in Google account, the preference can persist across mobile devices. This setting covers Google’s homepage, search results and Search settings; it does not act as a global switch for unrelated sites.
Why is Chrome dark but the website still white?
Chrome’s dark theme changes browser-owned surfaces and selected pages. A website is separate content, delivered by its publisher. The site may:

- Provide only a light color scheme.
- Support dark mode only through an in-page account or appearance menu.
- Ignore the browser’s
prefers-color-schemepreference. - Use images, embedded documents or fixed colors that remain bright.
- Apply a theme only after you sign in or save a site-specific preference.
Look for a moon icon, an avatar menu, Settings, Appearance or Theme on that website. If no such control exists, Chrome’s documented Android setting does not promise to recolor it.
Android 16 expanded darkening and its trade-offs
Android’s current accessibility guidance describes an expanded dark-theme option on Android 16 and newer that can automatically darken interfaces in many apps without a native dark theme. Availability and wording depend on the device. This is broader than an app’s own theme, but it is still not a guarantee for every web page.
Algorithmic darkening can change photographs, logos, charts and other images. It can also reduce contrast or make text harder to read. If a particular app or page looks worse, disable the expanded option or use the app’s own theme instead.

Color inversion: a last-resort accessibility option
Color inversion changes all displayed colors, including video, photos and other media. It can make a bright page look dark when no theme is available, but it is not aware of semantic page elements. Brand colors may become misleading, images may look unnatural and text legibility can suffer.
Use it only when its accessibility benefits outweigh those side effects. A site-aware dark theme or the site’s own appearance control is preferable.

What developers should know about embedded WebView
Android WebView behavior is different from the end-user Chrome setting. Depending on the Android/API target and the host app’s configuration, WebView can use a site’s prefers-color-scheme styles or algorithmically darken content when the app permits it and the page does not opt out. That developer-facing behavior does not establish a universal switch that Android users can enable in Chrome for every site.
Troubleshooting dark-mode problems
Chrome’s Theme option is missing
- Update Chrome from Google Play and reopen it.
- Confirm that you are in Chrome’s main Settings, not Android’s settings.
- Manufacturer-managed devices can hide or restrict settings; check with the device administrator.
Chrome is dark only while Battery Saver is on
Chrome is probably set to System Default. Return to Chrome > More > Settings > Theme and choose Dark for an always-dark Chrome interface.
Google Search is still light
Change Search separately through Google > More > Settings > Appearance > Dark theme. Android or Chrome’s theme alone does not set this Search preference.
One website remains bright
Check the site’s own appearance menu, sign-in settings and account preferences. If it has no dark option, the page may simply not support a dark color scheme. Do not rely on undocumented Chrome flags: an Auto Dark Theme experiment described by Chrome for Developers in 2021 is historical and is not verified current setup guidance.
Dark mode makes an image or text hard to see
Turn off expanded darkening for that app or page. If you enabled color inversion, disable it and use the site’s native theme or normal Android dark theme instead.

Dark mode switches unexpectedly
Check whether Chrome uses System Default, whether Android schedules dark theme, and whether Battery Saver is triggering the switch. Set both Android and Chrome explicitly if you need a fixed appearance.
