Use it to verify what your page publishes—not as proof that every network has refreshed its own crawler cache. The reliable workflow is: check the returned HTML, confirm the image URL and response, then validate the result with the platform where the problem occurs.
What an Open Graph image checker actually checks
Open Graph (OG) metadata is HTML in the page’s <head>. The protocol defines core properties such as og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url. The og:image value identifies the image associated with the page or object.
A checker normally requests your public URL as a crawler would and reports the tags it received. Depending on the product, it may also request the image, display its dimensions, test whether it loads, show image bytes, or render a mock preview. Those are tool-specific functions rather than promises made by the Open Graph protocol.
What the result can tell you
- Whether the response contains an
og:imagetag at all. - The exact image URL returned, including an unexpected relative path, redirect, or old filename.
- Whether title, description, type, and canonical URL tags are present and agree with the page you intended to share.
- Whether a checker that validates images can fetch the image and report dimensions or loading problems.
What it cannot prove
A checker’s preview is usually a representation of the tags it fetched. It does not necessarily equal the card currently stored by LinkedIn, Facebook, X, or another service. A platform can have a previous scrape cached, use a different crawler request, or reject an image for reasons the generic checker does not model.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to check an OG image yourself
Run the check against the exact URL users will share. Do not test only the homepage if the broken preview is a product, article, query-string, or redirected URL.
- Open the raw response. In a browser, view source and search for
og:image. DevTools also lets you inspect the initial document under the Network panel; make sure you are looking at server-delivered HTML, not only tags inserted later by JavaScript. - Read every relevant property. Record
og:title,og:description,og:type,og:url, and everyog:imagedeclaration. If several images are declared, their order can matter to consumers. - Resolve the image URL. It should be an absolute, publicly reachable URL using HTTPS. Open it in a private window and confirm that it returns the intended file rather than a login page, HTML error, hotlink block, or redirect to a different asset.
- Check the image response. Inspect the status,
Content-Type, redirects, and dimensions. A successful page fetch does not mean the image fetch succeeds. - Compare with the real network. If a platform still shows an old or missing card, use that platform’s own sharing debugger or inspection workflow to request a fresh scrape. Treat its result as authoritative for that network’s cache, not the generic checker’s mock.
Minimal HTML to add
<meta property="og:title" content="Example article">
<meta property="og:description" content="A concise description for sharing.">
<meta property="og:type" content="article">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/article">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/article-card.jpg">
Place these tags in the server-rendered <head> of the URL being shared. If your framework renders them only after hydration, a crawler that does not execute that JavaScript may see nothing.
Command-line checks for developers
Inspect the page HTML with cURL
curl -L --compressed -sS https://example.com/article | grep -iE 'og:(title|description|type|url|image)'
-L follows redirects, so compare the final URL with your intended canonical URL. For a full diagnostic, save the response and inspect it rather than relying on a case-sensitive grep.
Fetch the image response
curl -L -sS -D image-headers.txt -o og-image.bin https://example.com/images/article-card.jpg
file og-image.bin
cat image-headers.txt
Look for a 2xx status and an image MIME type such as image/jpeg, image/png, or image/webp. The file command can reveal when a URL returns HTML despite an image-looking filename.

Python metadata check
import requests
from bs4 import BeautifulSoup
url = "https://example.com/article"
r = requests.get(url, timeout=30, headers={"User-Agent": "Mozilla/5.0"})
r.raise_for_status()
soup = BeautifulSoup(r.text, "html.parser")
for prop in ("og:title", "og:description", "og:type", "og:url", "og:image"):
values = [m.get("content", "") for m in soup.find_all("meta", property=prop)]
print(prop, values)
Install the two dependencies with pip install requests beautifulsoup4. This reads the HTML returned to Python; it does not emulate a social network’s private cache.
Node.js metadata check
const url = 'https://example.com/article';
const res = await fetch(url, { headers: { 'user-agent': 'Mozilla/5.0' } });
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`${res.status} ${res.statusText}`);
const html = await res.text();
for (const prop of ['og:title','og:description','og:type','og:url','og:image']) {
const re = new RegExp(`]+property=["']${prop}["'][^>]+content=["']([^"']*)`, 'i');
console.log(prop, html.match(re)?.[1] ?? '(missing)');
}
This simple expression is useful for a quick check but is not a complete HTML parser. Use a parser library when attribute order, quoting, or malformed markup may vary.
Image dimensions and platform-specific rules
There is no single universal OG-image size requirement enforced by the protocol. Checker products may flag dimensions, file size, HTTPS, alt text, or loading behavior, but those checks differ by product.
LinkedIn’s sharing guidance says a shareable page should provide og:title, og:image, og:description, and og:url. For its LinkedIn sharing module, the guidance specifies a minimum image size of 1200 × 627 pixels. Treat that as LinkedIn-specific guidance, not a rule that every service applies.

| Check | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Declaration | og:image exists and points to the intended asset |
Without it, a consumer must guess or may show no image |
| Reachability | Public HTTPS request returns the image, not a challenge or HTML error | Crawlers need to download the bytes independently |
| Dimensions | Meet the target network’s documented guidance | Some networks crop, reject, or downgrade unsuitable images |
| Consistency | og:url matches the shared canonical page |
Different URL variants can have separate cached cards |
Why the wrong image still appears
The page publishes an old tag
Templates, CMS fields, or a reverse proxy may still emit a previous filename. Inspect the raw response, not the editor’s preview, and purge the layer that serves stale HTML.
Several images are declared
Some generators output a default image before the article-specific image. Remove accidental duplicates or put the desired image first, then recheck the fetched source.
The image URL is inaccessible to crawlers
Authentication, robots or firewall rules, signed URLs that expired, geo restrictions, and bot challenges can all prevent a platform from retrieving the asset. Test the image URL without your logged-in browser session.
The platform has not refreshed its cache
A generic checker can show new tags while a social network continues to display its earlier scrape. Submit the URL to that network’s official debugger or refresh control and inspect the fetch errors it reports.

JavaScript adds metadata too late
If the initial HTML lacks OG tags and a script inserts them after load, a crawler that reads only the document response will miss them. Render the tags on the server or at build time.
Choosing an Open Graph checker
Compare tools by the workflow they support rather than by a preview image alone.
- Raw metadata: Does it show the complete fetched tag set, including duplicate properties?
- Image validation: Does it request the image and report status, MIME type, dimensions, or byte-level problems?
- Network simulation: Which services, if any, does its preview model?
- Cache workflow: Does it link to or incorporate the platform-native debugger needed to inspect a real scrape?
- Request controls: Can you test redirects, user agents, authentication headers, or a staging URL?
Product pages for individual checkers describe different feature sets. Do not assume that one tool’s image-size or loading test is performed by every other checker.

Troubleshooting checklist
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Checker says image missing | Tag absent from server HTML or uses a non-OG attribute | Add meta property="og:image" in the initial <head> and retest |
| Wrong image is selected | Duplicate tags or stale template output | Remove the unwanted declaration and purge HTML/CDN caches |
| Image URL returns 403 or HTML | Access control, WAF challenge, or bad rewrite | Allow crawler access and verify status and MIME type with cURL |
| Preview is correct in checker but wrong on a network | Network cache or platform-specific fetch behavior | Use that network’s official debugger and request a new scrape |
| Image is cropped unexpectedly | Network presentation rules or unsuitable aspect ratio | Follow the target network’s current guidance and keep important text away from edges |
| Tags appear in DevTools but not view source | Client-side injection after load | Render metadata server-side or during static generation |
FAQ
Does an OG checker change my website?
No. It reads the response and, in some tools, requests the referenced image. Changing metadata requires editing your site and deploying it.
Should I use name or property for OG tags?
Open Graph examples use property, such as <meta property="og:image" content="...">. Keep the syntax consistent with your framework’s metadata generator.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan a checker test a page behind a login?
Only if the checker supports authenticated requests and you provide appropriate credentials. A public social crawler normally cannot access a private page, so its preview cannot be validated as though it were public.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take for a changed OG image to appear?
There is no single guaranteed interval. The result depends on the platform’s next fetch and cache policy; use its official debugger or refresh workflow to request an updated scrape.
Can I declare more than one og:image?
Yes, the protocol permits image properties to be grouped, but consumers can choose differently. Declare the preferred image first and verify the actual HTML order.
Is a simulated checker preview the same as a social-media card?
No. It represents what the checker fetched and rendered. The platform that receives the share may apply its own cropping, validation, crawler rules, and cached result.
