Fastest method: open the site in Chrome, turn on Device mode, set the phone-sized width you need, then choose More options → Capture screenshot. Use Capture a full size screenshot when you need the entire mobile page. This emulates a mobile viewport on your computer; it is not automatically a photograph of a physical phone. For repeatable work, use Playwright, Firefox Responsive Design Mode, or a screenshot API.
What “mobile version” means
A mobile screenshot normally means the page rendered at a narrow viewport such as 320, 375, or 425 CSS pixels. Responsive CSS, navigation breakpoints, image sizes and wrapping can therefore differ from the desktop view. Browser device modes can also simulate a mobile user agent, pixel ratio and touch input, but they still run the page on your desktop computer.
Chrome for Developers describes Device Mode as “a first-order approximation of how your page looks and feels on a mobile device.” If your conclusion depends on physical hardware, operating-system behavior, sensors, keyboard behavior, browser chrome or performance, verify it on an actual phone as well.
Chrome DevTools: the quickest desktop workflow
- Open the target URL in desktop Chrome.
- Open DevTools with F12, Ctrl+Shift+I (Windows/Linux), or Cmd+Option+I (macOS).
- Click Toggle device toolbar (the phone-and-tablet icon), or press Ctrl+Shift+M / Cmd+Shift+M.
- In the device toolbar, leave Dimensions on Responsive and enter the required width and height. Alternatively, select a preset.
- Reload the page while the emulation is active. This lets responsive scripts and layout rules initialize at the selected size.
- Open the device-toolbar More options menu. Choose Capture screenshot for the visible viewport, or Capture a full size screenshot for the complete emulated page.
Google’s documented width presets include Mobile S (320 px), Mobile M (375 px), Mobile L (425 px), Tablet (768 px), Laptop (1024 px), Laptop L (1440 px), and 4K (2560 px). They are convenient width settings, not representations of every phone. Enter the breakpoint you actually need when testing a design.

When to change pixel ratio or mobile mode
The basic capture does not require changing anything beyond dimensions. Set a device pixel ratio when you are checking image sharpness or export resolution. Enable the mobile device type when touch events or mobile-versus-desktop event handling matter. Chrome distinguishes simulated mobile rendering and touch events from desktop rendering and click events; neither setting proves that code ran on a physical handset.
Viewport or full-page?
- Viewport screenshot: records the initial phone-sized screen or a specific visible state.
- Full-size screenshot: includes content below the fold. A long mobile layout can produce a very tall image, so confirm that this is useful for your review or documentation.
Firefox Responsive Design Mode
- Open the page in Firefox.
- Choose Browser Tools → Responsive Design Mode, click the responsive-design button in the DevTools toolbar, or press Ctrl+Shift+M (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Option+M (macOS).
- Type a width and height, drag the viewport, or select a device preset.
- Use the mode’s camera button to save the current responsive view to Firefox’s download location.
Firefox can simulate touch, screen size, pixel ratio, user-agent behavior and network throttling. These are simulated properties, so label the result as an emulated capture rather than evidence from a real device.
Firefox full-page, element and console captures
For a complete page, enable the toolbox button Take a screenshot of the entire page. In the Inspector, right-click a node and choose Screenshot Node to capture one element. Firefox’s Web Console also provides the Firefox-specific :screenshot helper:
:screenshot --fullpage --filename mobile-full.png
:screenshot --selector ".checkout-card" --dpr 2 --delay 500 --filename card.png
--fullpage, --selector, --delay, --dpr and --filename are documented Firefox options. The selector form is useful when a full tall page would obscure the component you are reviewing.

Playwright for repeatable mobile screenshots
Use automation when you capture the same URLs on every release, need a fixed matrix of viewport sizes, or want screenshots in CI. The screenshot API can save a file, return a buffer, capture the full scrollable page, or capture a locator. Install and launch the browser according to your project’s Playwright setup, then use a script such as:
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 375, height: 812 },
deviceScaleFactor: 2,
isMobile: true,
hasTouch: true
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'mobile-viewport.png' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'mobile-full.png', fullPage: true });
await page.locator('header').screenshot({ path: 'mobile-header.png' });
await browser.close();
Use a viewport screenshot for the first screen, fullPage: true for the entire scrollable document, and a locator screenshot for one component. The browser and page creation shown above is separate from the screenshot calls themselves; adapt launch, authentication and waiting to your test suite.
Choose the capture method that fits the job
| Method | Best for | Capture choices | Device simulation | Repeatability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome Device Mode | One-off visual checks | Viewport or full size | Dimensions, optional pixel ratio and touch/mobile mode | Manual |
| Firefox Responsive Design Mode | Firefox-based inspection and element captures | Viewport, full page, element, console helper | Size, pixel ratio, touch, user agent and throttling | Manual or console-assisted |
| Playwright | CI, regression checks and URL batches | File, buffer, full page, locator and clip options | Scripted viewport and device settings | High |
| Physical phone | Hardware- or OS-dependent behavior | Native device screenshot | Real hardware and browser | Requires device workflow |
Make the result reliable
- Wait for content: lazy images, fonts and client-rendered sections may appear after the first paint. Reload after changing dimensions, then wait for a visible landmark or a network-idle condition in automation.
- Record the dimensions: include the CSS viewport width and height in the filename or test metadata so later reviewers know what “mobile” means.
- Capture the same state: dismiss consent dialogs, close menus and scroll to a known position before taking a viewport shot. If the page changes by time of day, locale or login state, fix those inputs.
- Inspect tall pages: full-page output can be impractically long on mobile. Prefer an element capture or several viewport captures when the reader needs detail.
- Compare real devices when necessary: emulation cannot establish physical touch latency, hardware decoding, camera permissions, OS text rendering or every browser quirk.
Common problems and fixes
The page still looks like desktop
Confirm that the device toolbar is enabled and that you reloaded after changing width. Check the page’s responsive breakpoints; a width just above a breakpoint may intentionally retain desktop navigation.
The screenshot is blank or missing images
Wait for lazy-loaded content and fonts. In Playwright, wait for a meaningful selector or use an appropriate load condition rather than capturing immediately after navigation. Check the browser console for blocked requests, authentication failures or JavaScript errors.

The full-page capture is cut off
Use Chrome’s Capture a full size screenshot, Firefox’s entire-page tool, or Playwright’s fullPage: true. Sticky headers and infinite-scroll pages can still produce unexpected results; capture sections or a fixed scroll state when needed.
Touch interactions do not work
Enable touch/mobile simulation in the browser tool, but treat the result as an approximation. Re-test on a phone if the interaction is central to your claim.
The output is blurry
Increase device pixel ratio for an inspection image, or export at the dimensions required by your documentation system. Keep CSS dimensions and pixel dimensions distinct when comparing files.
A consent banner, chat bubble or bot check covers the page
Handle the state as a visitor would, or hide the obstruction only when that reflects your test objective. Bot checks and authentication flows may require a permitted test environment; do not attempt to bypass access controls.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its cleaning steps accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
For a one-off mobile capture, send the target URL with your API key. See the full parameter list and viewport options in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

FAQ
Does an emulated screenshot prove the site works on a phone?
No. It demonstrates how the page renders under selected simulated conditions. Use a physical-device check for hardware, operating-system or browser behavior.
Should I use a viewport or full-page image for a bug report?
Use a viewport image when the defect is visible in the initial screen; use full-page or an element capture when context below the fold or a specific component is necessary.

Yes. Playwright can loop over a defined viewport matrix, and an API can accept repeated or bulk URL jobs. Keep each width and device setting in the recorded test metadata.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture a mobile screenshot without owning a phone?
Yes. Chrome or Firefox can emulate the viewport on a desktop, and Playwright can automate it. A real phone is only necessary for behavior that emulation cannot reproduce.
