Press Shift-Command-3 for the entire display, Shift-Command-4 and drag for a selected region, or press Shift-Command-4, then Space, and click the Chrome window. For timers, destinations, pointer settings, and capture modes, press Shift-Command-5 to open the macOS Screenshot app.
Those shortcuts belong to macOS, so they work while Chrome is open but capture the visible screen rather than a webpage’s complete document. For a webpage area or a page that extends below the viewport, use Chrome DevTools instead.
Choose the capture method that matches your goal

Take a screenshot of the whole display
Bring Chrome and any other content you want visible into position, then press Shift-Command-3. macOS captures every visible display area. By default, Apple saves the image to the Desktop.
If you use more than one monitor, the shortcut captures the displays according to macOS’s screenshot behavior. Check the resulting file before sharing it if another screen contains private information.

Copy the whole-display capture instead of saving it
Hold Control while pressing the shortcut: Control-Shift-Command-3. The image is copied to the Clipboard rather than saved as a file. Paste it into Mail, Messages, Preview, an editor, or another app with Command-V.
Capture a selected area of Chrome
- Press Shift-Command-4. The pointer changes to a crosshair.
- Drag from one corner of the desired area to the opposite corner.
- Release the mouse or trackpad to take the shot.
Press Escape before releasing to cancel. While drawing the rectangle, hold Space to move the selection without changing its dimensions. This method captures what is visible on the display, including browser chrome, tabs, and anything that overlaps the page.
To put the selected image on the Clipboard, hold Control while starting the shortcut: Control-Shift-Command-4.
Capture only the Chrome window
- Bring the target Chrome window to the front.
- Press Shift-Command-4.
- Press Space. The pointer changes from a crosshair to a camera.
- Click the Chrome window.
macOS normally includes a window shadow. Hold Option while clicking to omit that shadow. This is useful for documentation images that need a tighter edge around Chrome.
Click the floating thumbnail that appears after capture if you want to mark up or crop the image immediately. Otherwise, wait for it to disappear and open the saved file from the Desktop or the destination you selected in Screenshot settings.
Use the Screenshot app for timers and settings
Press Shift-Command-5 to open the on-screen Screenshot controls. Choose an entire-screen capture, a window capture, or a selected-area capture from the toolbar.

Set a destination
Select Options, then choose where new screenshots should be saved. The default is the Desktop, but you can select another folder or a Clipboard workflow. Changing this setting affects captures made through the Screenshot app; verify the destination when troubleshooting a “missing” image.
Add a timer
Open Options and choose a timer when you need time to open a menu, position a tooltip, or prepare a page. Start the capture after selecting the delay, then arrange Chrome before the countdown ends.

Control the floating thumbnail and pointer
The Options menu lets you show or hide the floating thumbnail and include or exclude the pointer. Excluding the pointer produces cleaner instructional images; keeping it visible can show which control was selected.
macOS version notes
Apple documents the Screenshot app from macOS Mojave 10.14 onward. On supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Apple also documents SDR/PNG and HDR/HEIF capture-format choices. If those format controls are absent, your Mac or macOS version may not support them.
Capture a webpage area with Chrome DevTools
Use DevTools when you want the page itself rather than the whole desktop. This is still a visible-area operation, but the selection is made over the webpage viewport.
- Focus the Chrome page and press Command-Option-I to open DevTools.
- Press Command-Shift-P to open the DevTools Command Menu.
- Type screenshot.
- Choose Capture area screenshot.
- Drag over the webpage region you want.
Keep DevTools docked inside the Chrome window. Chrome’s DevTools documentation notes that area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked.

Capture a full-size webpage
A normal Mac shortcut cannot include content that has not been rendered in the visible viewport. For a page that continues below the fold, a March 2025 Chrome Community answer describes this DevTools route:
- Press Command-Option-I.
- Press Command-Shift-P.
- Type capture full size screenshot.
- Choose the matching command.
Chrome renders the page at full size and creates an image that includes the page below the current viewport. Treat this as community support guidance rather than a guarantee that every Chrome release exposes the same command. If the command is missing, update Chrome, keep DevTools docked, or use a dedicated capture service.
Why a full-page result can differ from what you see
- Lazy-loaded images may not appear until the page has been scrolled or otherwise triggered.
- Sticky headers can repeat or cover content in a long capture.
- Cookie dialogs, chat bubbles, and newsletter pop-ups may be included unless you dismiss them first.
- Pages that require a login, location, or interaction can render differently in a capture context.
For a faithful result, wait for the page to finish loading, close overlays, and check the output at its natural size rather than relying only on a thumbnail.
Save, edit, and share the image
Find the file
Unless you changed the destination, look on the Desktop. Screenshot filenames generally include the date and time, which helps distinguish repeated captures. If you used the Clipboard shortcut, there will be no new file to find; paste the image into the destination app instead.

Open the file in Preview or click the floating thumbnail. Crop away browser tabs or unrelated windows, add arrows or text, and export in the format required by your documentation or ticketing system.
Protect private information
Inspect the image at full resolution before uploading it. Address bars, account names, notification banners, customer data, and other tabs can be visible in a screen or window capture. A selected-area capture or a crop is safer than sharing the entire display.
Common problems and fixes
The shortcut does nothing
Check that you are using the Mac keys: Command, not Control, for the standard shortcut. A third-party utility or a custom keyboard shortcut may have taken over the key combination. Open macOS keyboard-shortcut settings, temporarily disable the conflicting assignment, and try again.

The image saved somewhere unexpected
Press Shift-Command-5, open Options, and check the selected destination. Also check whether you used a Control-modified shortcut, which copies to the Clipboard instead of creating a file.
The Chrome window capture includes a shadow
Repeat the window workflow and hold Option while clicking the window. Alternatively, crop the saved image in Preview.
DevTools has no “Capture area screenshot” command
Open the Command Menu with Command-Shift-P while DevTools is open and type “screenshot.” If the command still does not appear, make sure DevTools is docked and that the cursor was focused on the Chrome viewport when DevTools opened.
The full-size command is missing
The full-page sequence is documented in a Chrome Community answer, not as a universal promise for every release. Update Chrome, keep DevTools docked, search for both “full size” and “screenshot,” or use an API-based capture workflow.
The webpage is blank, blocked, or incomplete
Wait for network activity to settle, reload the page, and test without extensions that block scripts or resources. A bot check, authentication wall, or consent dialog may prevent a normal browser capture from representing the final page.

FAQ
Can I take a screenshot while Chrome is in full-screen mode?
Yes. The Mac shortcuts operate at the macOS display level, so full-screen Chrome does not change the key combinations. Check the resulting image for any macOS overlays before sharing it.
Does a screenshot capture browser audio?
No. These workflows create a still image; they do not record sound or video.
Can I capture a page behind a login?
Only if Chrome is already authenticated and the page is visible to that session. A capture cannot bypass a login, permission prompt, or bot challenge.

What is the difference between a screen capture and a webpage capture?
A screen or window capture records pixels currently displayed by macOS. A DevTools or API capture can render webpage dimensions beyond the visible viewport and apply page-specific controls.
