To convert existing HTML to PDF in C#, use a renderer that accepts HTML or a browser-based workflow; use a C# PDF layout library only when you are willing to define the document in C# rather than render an existing HTML template. IronPDF documents HTML-string, file, and URL inputs. Playwright .NET automates a browser and requires browser installation. QuestPDF creates PDFs from C# components and is not established by its quick start as an HTML converter.

Choose an approach based on where your document starts

Your starting point Suitable approach What to verify
An HTML string, file, or web page URL IronPDF for .NET documents those input types in its .NET API overview. Check CSS and JavaScript behavior, the package version, and your target runtime.
A .NET application that needs browser automation Playwright .NET provides browser automation; its setup installs the package and browser binaries. Include browser installation and platform packaging in CI and deployment planning.
A PDF whose layout can be authored in C# QuestPDF provides a component-based PDF layout API. Its cited quick start does not show HTML ingestion. Check license eligibility before production use.

The key distinction is the authoring model. HTML renderers take your HTML and produce a rendered document. QuestPDF asks you to compose a document from C# components and layout rules. Rebuilding an HTML document in a component library may be reasonable for a new, structured report, but it is not a drop-in conversion of an existing page.

Choose after checking six things: whether the source is HTML or a new C# layout; the CSS and JavaScript behavior required; browser runtime and packaging needs; framework and hosting environment; license eligibility; and who will maintain the template or layout definition.

Render HTML with IronPDF

IronPDF’s vendor API overview demonstrates rendering an HTML string, a URL, or an HTML file with ChromePdfRenderer, then saving the resulting PDF. It also describes CSS3 and JavaScript support and lists .NET Core, .NET Standard, .NET Framework 4.6.2 and later, .NET 5 through 9, Windows, macOS, Linux, Docker, Azure, and AWS. These are vendor claims; confirm compatibility for the exact package release and host you deploy.

The following is a minimal shape for an HTML-string conversion using the API names shown in IronPDF’s overview. Confirm the constructor and package references against the documentation for your selected release before adopting it:

using IronPdf;

var renderer = new ChromePdfRenderer();
string html = "<html><body><h1>Hello, PDF</h1></body></html>";
var pdf = renderer.RenderHtmlAsPdf(html);
pdf.SaveAs("output.pdf");

For a remote page, use RenderUrlAsPdf; for a local document, use RenderHtmlFileAsPdf. The same high-level flow applies: create the renderer, render the selected input, and save the resulting PDF. The API overview also describes configurable rendering options; consult its current documentation for option names and defaults rather than assuming browser print settings are identical across versions.

IronPDF’s API overview is the vendor source for the input methods and compatibility claims above. The URL supplied for that overview is retained here exactly; verify that the page covers the .NET API you plan to use before implementation.

Use Playwright .NET for browser-driven PDF output

Playwright is a fit when your .NET application needs to control a browser to load a page before PDF output. Unlike a simple NuGet-only dependency, the official setup requires installing the Microsoft.Playwright package and installing browser binaries. The Playwright guide says the default build bundles the driver for the .NET publish target runtime; configure additional platforms in the project when needed.

  1. Add the package with dotnet add package Microsoft.Playwright.
  2. Build the project so the Playwright install script is generated.
  3. Run the generated install script to install the browser binaries required by your environment.
  4. In application code, use Playwright’s current Page API to navigate to or load the content and produce the PDF; check the current API reference for method signatures and supported options.
  5. Repeat the browser-install and platform-packaging steps in CI and in the production image or host.

The setup guide establishes the dependency and installation steps; the Page API reference is the source to consult for current PDF methods and options. This article does not prescribe a method signature because it must match the API version you install. Verify whether your target runtime and host can package and launch the required browser before committing to this approach.

Build the PDF in C# with QuestPDF

QuestPDF is an adjacent choice when you can represent the document as C# components. Its official quick start describes it as “a modern C# library for PDF generation that provides a dedicated layout engine optimized specifically for creating PDF documents.” It installs via NuGet:

dotnet add package QuestPDF

The quick start demonstrates defining a document with page size, margins, header, content, and footer. Its ASP.NET example configures the license once during application initialization and returns generated PDF bytes with the application/pdf content type. That makes it suitable for a report or document designed in C#, not evidence of HTML-to-PDF conversion. For a site already maintained as HTML and CSS, using QuestPDF means recreating its structure and presentation in the QuestPDF layout model.

Check the license before production

QuestPDF’s license-selection guide, effective 6 July 2026, says an organisation may qualify for the Community License if its annual gross revenue is under USD 1,000,000, among other eligibility categories. Public-sector entities other than covered academic institutions and publicly traded companies are ineligible regardless of revenue. Organisations that do not qualify must obtain a paid license before production use. The guide is explanatory, not the binding agreement; check the applicable terms against your organisation and use case.

Plan for predictable print output

HTML designed for a browser viewport may not be ready for pagination. Before choosing a renderer, define what a successful PDF means for the real documents you produce.

  • Test the actual fonts and images used in production, including assets that load from remote URLs.
  • Check page size, margins, page breaks, headers, and footers on representative long and short documents.
  • Verify CSS print-media rules and any JavaScript needed to populate the page before capture.
  • Test right-to-left text, unusual glyphs, and dynamic sections if your content includes them.
  • Run the same test in the target operating system, container, or cloud host; local development success does not establish deployment compatibility.

These are validation checks, not claims that a particular library will render every page identically. The cited material does not provide independent fidelity, speed, or cost benchmarks among these options.

Deployment, reliability, and cost trade-offs

Browser-based rendering

With Playwright, the application must be able to install and launch its browser runtime. Account for browser binaries, supported publish targets, and image size in build and deployment design. If rendering fails in production, check browser installation and permissions as well as the page itself.

Vendor renderer

IronPDF documents a wide range of runtimes and hosting platforms, but a broad vendor compatibility list does not guarantee that every release works with every host configuration. Validate the chosen package on the exact framework, operating system, and deployment model. No comparative pricing or performance figure is established here.

C# layout library

QuestPDF avoids treating HTML as the source document: your C# definitions become the maintained layout. That can suit documents designed as structured reports, but it changes the implementation and maintenance work when an existing HTML template is the source. Confirm the license terms before production deployment.

Troubleshooting common conversion problems

The output is blank or content is missing

Confirm that the input URL or file is reachable from the process that renders it, and that required page content has loaded before output begins. Check for authentication, remote assets, and JavaScript-dependent sections. Reproduce the issue with the same input and deployment environment rather than relying only on a local browser preview.

Fonts, images, or styling differ from the browser preview

Check that fonts and assets are available to the renderer and that the document’s print styles are appropriate. Then test the selected renderer’s CSS and JavaScript behavior in the package version and host you use. Do not assume a browser preview and a PDF use the same viewport or print rules.

Playwright cannot launch a browser

Verify that the browser-install script ran for the deployed target and that the published application includes the needed browser assets. The Playwright guide documents browser installation and target-runtime bundling; repeat these steps in CI and the production build rather than installing only on a developer machine.

The PDF breaks at awkward points or has unexpected page dimensions

Check the renderer’s page settings and the HTML’s print CSS. Test with the actual page size, margins, long tables, and repeated header/footer content expected in production. Adjust the template and rendering options together, then validate several representative documents.

The chosen library does not accept the input you have

Separate conversion from authoring: for existing HTML, use an HTML-capable renderer or browser workflow; for a new document composed in C#, use a layout API such as QuestPDF. The QuestPDF quick start reviewed here does not establish HTML ingestion.

Or skip the browser setup

For a screenshot of a public web page rather than a paginated PDF, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request API. It is a screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media, not a substitute for every HTML-to-PDF workflow. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes supported cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools, and the Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
