Download the 64-bit or 32-bit installer (or a 7z archive) that matches your Windows architecture, install or extract it, then verify the executable from Command Prompt or PowerShell. The package is commonly named wkhtmltox or wkhtmltopdf; it includes the separate wkhtmltoimage.exe program.
The stable 0.12.6 release was published on June 11, 2020. The project’s Windows labels say “Vista or later” for installers and “XP/2003 or later” for 7z archives, but those labels are not a guarantee of behavior on every current Windows build. Check the project’s official downloads page and its linked GitHub release before installing.
What you need before installing
- A supported Windows computer and permission to install software, unless you use the portable 7z archive.
- Your Windows architecture: normally x64 on modern PCs, or x86 (32-bit) on older systems.
- A destination folder for the executable if you choose the archive.
- A test URL or local HTML file that you are authorized to render.
To check architecture, open Settings → System → About and read System type. You can also run msinfo32 and inspect System Type. Select an x64 package for a 64-bit operating system; select x86 for a 32-bit operating system.
Choose the Windows package

The official downloads page hosts links through GitHub releases. Prefer the installer when you want the simplest setup. Choose the archive when you need a self-contained directory, cannot run installers, or want to control exactly where the files live. The published materials do not establish a performance difference between these package forms.

Install with the Windows installer
- Open the official wkhtmltopdf downloads page and follow its GitHub release link.
- Download the Windows installer whose bitness matches your system. The filename may contain
wkhtmltoxorwkhtmltopdf; that is expected. - Run the downloaded installer. If Windows SmartScreen appears, verify that the file came from the project’s official release link before choosing to continue.
- Accept the license, keep the default destination unless your organization requires another folder, and complete the wizard.
- Close any existing Command Prompt or PowerShell windows. A newly opened shell is required after a PATH change.
The installer contains both command-line tools. Look in its installation directory for wkhtmltoimage.exe and wkhtmltopdf.exe.
Install from the 7z archive
- Download the 64-bit or 32-bit Windows 7z package from the official downloads page.
- Extract it with a 7z-compatible utility into a stable folder, for example
C:Toolswkhtmltox. Avoid extracting into a temporary Downloads subfolder that may later be cleaned. - Open the extracted folders and locate the directory containing
wkhtmltoimage.exe. Depending on the release layout, it may be below abindirectory. - Test the executable by running it from that directory before changing PATH.
Extraction alone does not register a command globally. You must either use the executable’s full path or add its containing folder to PATH.
Verify that wkhtmltoimage works
Run it from its installation folder
In File Explorer, open the folder containing wkhtmltoimage.exe, click the address bar, type cmd, and press Enter. Then run:
wkhtmltoimage https://example.com output.jpgThis should create output.jpg in the current directory. The same syntax works with a local HTML file:

wkhtmltoimage --versionConfirm that the command identifies the installed 0.12.x build. If Windows reports that the command is unknown, the program may still be installed; the shell simply cannot locate its directory yet.
Add wkhtmltoimage to PATH
PATH lets you run wkhtmltoimage from any directory. Add the folder that directly contains wkhtmltoimage.exe, not the parent folder several levels above it.
- Press Windows, search for environment variables, and select Edit the system environment variables.
- In System Properties, select Environment Variables.
- Under User variables (usually sufficient), select Path and choose Edit.
- Choose New, paste the executable directory, and confirm with OK through every dialog.
- Open a new Command Prompt or PowerShell window and run
wkhtmltoimage --version.
For a temporary, current-session test in Command Prompt, use:

Wait for client-rendered content
wkhtmltoimage --javascript-delay 3000 https://example.com rendered.pngA delay gives scripts time to modify the page, but it also increases runtime. If the page never finishes or depends on browser APIs unsupported by the embedded Qt WebKit engine, a delay will not make it compatible.

The executable is not on PATH
Run the command from the installation directory or invoke the full path:
"C:Program Fileswkhtmltopdfbinwkhtmltoimage.exe" https://example.com output.pngIf that works, add the quoted path’s directory to your user PATH and open a new shell.
You changed PATH but reused an old shell
Command Prompt and PowerShell read environment variables when they start. Close all old windows and open a fresh one. In an existing PowerShell session, inspect the current value with $env:Path.

You added the wrong directory
Use File Explorer search for wkhtmltoimage.exe, then add the exact containing folder. Do not add the path to the installer file, archive, or a shortcut.

32-bit and 64-bit packages were mixed up
Remove the mismatched package and install the architecture appropriate for Windows. A 32-bit application can often run on 64-bit Windows, but the project publishes separate packages and matching them avoids loader surprises.
PowerShell treats a full path unexpectedly
When calling a quoted executable path in PowerShell, place the call operator before it:

Automation, reliability, and security
wkhtmltoimage is a headless command-line renderer based on Qt WebKit. Its 0.12.6 release dates to 2020, so modern JavaScript, CSS, TLS behavior, and anti-bot systems may not match a current full browser. Pin the exact executable path in scheduled jobs, log the command and exit code, set an external timeout, and write outputs to unique filenames.
Do not treat arbitrary HTML as harmless input. The project warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” Sanitize user-controlled markup, isolate rendering in a low-privilege process, restrict outbound network access where possible, and never pass unsanitized HTML or JavaScript from an untrusted user directly to an automated renderer.

Because the published stable release is old and the repository is archived, evaluate whether your compliance, browser-compatibility, and security requirements are met before deploying it as a service. A successful local installation proves only that the binary launches; it does not prove that every site will render correctly.

Is wkhtmltoimage a separate download?
No. It is included in the wkhtmltopdf command-line package, even when the installer’s filename uses wkhtmltox or wkhtmltopdf.
Can I install it without administrator rights?
