If you’re building a page that offers a download, link to the JPG with an HTML <a download> element. That attribute is a useful filename hint, not a way to force downloads from every website: for JavaScript to fetch another site’s image bytes, that server must allow your page through CORS.
First decide what you mean by “download”
There are two different jobs that can sound like downloading a JPG from HTML:
- Saving an image as a visitor: you want a copy of an image displayed on a page. Use the browser’s image-saving command or open the image itself and save it.
- Offering a download as a page author: you want a link or button that lets visitors save an image file. Use an anchor link for a same-site image, or JavaScript when you have permission to obtain the image bytes.
A third task—saving a picture of the whole webpage—is a screenshot, not a download of the original JPG. The distinction matters: a screenshot captures pixels as displayed, while an image download saves the image resource itself, which may have a different resolution, crop, or format.
Save a JPG from a page in your browser
On a computer
- Right-click the image and choose the browser’s save-image command, such as Save image as. The wording differs by browser.
- Choose a folder and filename in the save dialog. If the browser offers a file type or extension, check that it reflects the actual image format.
- If the menu does not offer an image-saving command, open the image in a new tab (often available from the context menu), then use the browser’s save command there.
On a phone or tablet
Press and hold the image and use the browser’s image menu to save it, if the browser and site permit that action. Menu names and available options vary by device and browser.

Check whether you saved the version you wanted
A page may display a small thumbnail while linking to a larger image, or use a responsive image source selected for the current screen. Saving what is displayed may therefore give you a different file from the full-size original. If the image opens in a new tab, check that URL too. A file extension alone is not conclusive proof of format; the page or server may serve a different type than the name suggests.
Find the image URL in the page
If you are inspecting a page you are authorized to access, open the browser’s developer tools and inspect the image element. Look at its src attribute and, when present, srcset. A srcset can list several candidates so the browser can select an appropriate file for the viewport or display density. The selected image may not be the largest one listed.
To inspect in common desktop browsers, right-click the image and choose Inspect (or the equivalent developer-tools command). In the Elements or Inspector panel, find the rendered <img> and examine its source attributes. You can also use the browser’s open-image command to see the URL used for the displayed image. If there is no image element, the visible image may be a CSS background; inspect the element’s styles for a background-image value.
Before treating a URL as a downloadable JPG, check where it leads and what the server returns. The destination could be a page around an image, a thumbnail, or another image format. If the site provides its own download control, use that rather than trying to circumvent access restrictions.

Offer a JPG download from your own site
When the file is hosted on the same origin as your page, a direct anchor is usually the simplest option:
<a href="/images/photo.jpg" download="photo.jpg">Download JPG</a>The href identifies the image file. The optional value in download suggests a filename to use when saving; it does not guarantee the browser will save the file rather than open it. Browser settings and the server’s response headers, including Content-Disposition, can affect what happens. The attribute is intended for same-origin URLs and also works with blob: and data: URLs. Do not rely on it to force a download from a third-party origin.
Use a clear filename and make the link’s text describe the action. If the image is not actually a JPG, do not label it as one or give it a misleading extension.
Download image bytes with JavaScript
JavaScript can fetch an image, wrap the response bytes in a Blob, and create a temporary object URL for a download link. This example is intended for a same-origin image or a remote image server that explicitly permits your page’s origin through CORS. Call it from a user action, such as a button click.

</script>Change the example path and filename to match your own file. The filename is still a suggestion; use an extension that matches the actual format. For very large files, consider linking directly instead of fetching the entire response into page memory.
Why a displayed image may not be downloadable by script
A browser can display an image from another site without granting the page’s JavaScript permission to read the response bytes. Cross-origin access is controlled by the image server’s CORS response. If the server does not allow your page’s origin, fetch() may fail, and drawing the image into a canvas can leave that canvas tainted so its pixels cannot be read.
Adding crossorigin="anonymous" to an image or setting crossOrigin = 'anonymous' in JavaScript changes the kind of request the browser makes; it does not grant permission on its own. The server must return suitable CORS headers. If you control the image host, configure it to allow the intended origin, or serve the file through a download route on your own origin. If you do not control it, use the site’s own download option or save through the browser where permitted. A proxy that fetches content without authorization is not a legitimate workaround.

The browser saves a small or blurry image
You may have saved the displayed thumbnail or a responsive variant. Open the image itself, inspect src and srcset, and check whether the page links to a larger original. The largest candidate is not necessarily publicly accessible or the one the site intends visitors to use.
The link opens the image instead of saving it
download is a hint, not a guarantee, and it is restricted for cross-origin URLs. For a file you control, use a same-origin URL and, if you manage the server, configure an appropriate Content-Disposition response. Visitors may also have browser settings that open certain image types directly.

Confirm the image URL and inspect the browser console and network response. If the request is cross-origin, the remote server must allow your origin; a client-side attribute cannot override the server’s policy. If you cannot change that server, use its download mechanism or provide a same-origin route for content you are authorized to serve.

The file downloads but has the wrong type or an unexpected name
Check the response’s content type and the actual file, not only its URL suffix. Set the suggested download filename to match the real format, and check whether the server sends a filename or disposition in Content-Disposition.
The page shows the image but there is no obvious image URL
Inspect the rendered element and its styles. The image may be supplied by a CSS background-image, or the visible element may link to a wrapper page rather than a file. Inspecting the page can identify the resource, but it does not remove site access controls.
Practical reliability and performance notes
- Prefer a direct link for files you host. It avoids fetching the full image into JavaScript memory and keeps the download path simple.
- Validate JavaScript responses. Check
response.okand, where appropriate, the content type before treating a response as an image; an error page can otherwise be saved with a JPG filename. - Release temporary object URLs. Revoke each URL when the download has started and the page no longer needs it, as in the example.
- Test the actual browser behavior. Download handling can differ with browser settings, server headers, and origin boundaries; verify the experience in the browsers your visitors use.

Is JPG different from JPEG?
JPG and JPEG refer to the same image format; the shorter extension became common where file extensions were limited to three characters.

No. Saving a file is a technical action, not a license. Check the site’s terms and the image’s applicable rights before republishing or otherwise reusing it.
Can I download a JPG from a page that requires a login?
Only use access and download methods permitted by that site. A visible image does not grant permission to bypass login, access controls, or the site’s download restrictions.
