Visual regression testing detects changes in how an interface renders by comparing a new screenshot with an approved baseline. It can flag unexpected shifts in layout, styling, color, text, interface state, or images—but a difference is a signal to review, not proof that something is broken.

What visual regression testing detects

A visual regression test captures an interface at a chosen checkpoint and compares that image with a stored reference, or baseline. The checkpoint might be a component, a page, or a particular state in a user flow. When the rendered output differs, the test reports a visual change for someone to assess.

The method is useful because an interface can look wrong even while its underlying controls still work. A functional test may confirm that a button can be clicked, for example, but a screenshot comparison can flag that the button has moved, become hard to see, or disappeared from the captured view. Conversely, a visual difference might be an intentional redesign rather than a defect.

Applitools describes this general visual UI testing workflow as capturing and comparing interface output, while Playwright documents comparison against reference screenshots. Applitools’ overview of visual UI testing and Playwright’s visual comparisons guide explain their respective approaches.

Which kinds of changes can it flag?

Layout and spacing

A diff can reveal that an element moved, two elements overlap, a section collapsed, spacing changed, or content no longer lines up. These changes may result from a CSS edit, a changed container size, a different font, or a change in the amount of visible content. A screenshot shows the rendered outcome; it does not, by itself, identify the code or cause responsible.

Appearance and color

Visual comparisons can flag changed fills, borders, shadows, styling, or other visual treatments. A small color adjustment may be intentional, while an unexpected style change can signal a regression. Whether a tool reports a subtle difference depends on its comparison method and tolerance settings.

Text and typography

A comparison may catch changed or missing words, altered line wrapping, or visible typography differences. Text can wrap differently when the available width, font, or font rendering changes. The diff indicates that the image changed; it does not judge whether wording is correct or whether a new line break is acceptable.

Visible state

A checkpoint can render a different interface state than the baseline: for example, a menu may be open instead of closed, or a page may show a different loading or error state. This is why a test’s setup matters. If the interface is captured at the wrong point in a flow, the comparison can faithfully flag the wrong state without telling you whether the application logic or the test timing caused it.

Images and other rendered content

A diff can expose an image that changed, disappeared, or rendered differently. It can also draw attention to changed content elsewhere in the screenshot. The result is limited to what the capture includes: an element outside the viewport, hidden at capture time, or omitted from the selected scope cannot be assessed from that image.

What reported issue categories suggest—and what they do not

A 2026 arXiv preprint, “What Are Developers Actually Discussing When Visual Regression Tests Fail?”, reports a card-sort analysis of 189 issues flagged by visual-regression tests. Its reported categories were Layout (39.7%), Appearance (27.5%), Color (14.8%), Text (9.5%), State (6.9%), Test (6.3%), and Image (4.2%).

Those figures describe the issues sampled in that study, not a universal breakdown of visual defects or a prediction of what any particular team will find. The listed percentages total more than 100%, so they should not be read as a mutually exclusive distribution in which each issue belongs to exactly one category. The practical takeaway is narrower: reported visual-test issues can concern both what users see and the test conditions that produced the capture.

What a visual diff cannot prove

A diff proves only that the captured output differs from the selected baseline under the comparison conditions. It does not automatically prove that:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the change is a user-facing defect rather than an approved design update;
  • the application code, rather than the test setup or rendering environment, caused it;
  • the changed region is important to users; or
  • the rest of the interface is correct simply because no difference was reported.

A reviewer must decide whether to accept the new image as the baseline or investigate and reject the change. Applitools describes this review-and-baseline workflow in its visual UI testing overview. That judgment is important: a useful test surfaces a meaningful change, while a noisy or poorly scoped capture can create work without identifying a product defect.

Why screenshots can differ when the product did not

Screenshot output can vary with the machine and browser that render it, as well as browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright warns that these environmental differences can affect screenshot comparisons and says: “For consistent screenshots, run tests in the same environment where the baseline screenshots were generated.” See its visual comparisons documentation.

Image-comparison methods also vary. A strict pixel comparison can report small rendering changes; a layout-oriented comparison or a product’s tolerance rules may treat some changes differently. Applitools, for instance, documents strict pixel, layout-oriented, and dynamic-data comparison modes, and describes its Visual AI as ignoring some rendering noise such as anti-aliasing and sub-pixel shifts. These are documented capabilities of that product, not a guarantee that all false positives disappear. Applitools’ Playwright integration documentation describes its approach.

Chromatic documents pixel-diff snapshots and notes that a device-pixel-ratio mismatch can explain an expected difference. That is one example of why a reported change should be checked against capture settings before it is treated as a code regression. See Chromatic’s snapshots documentation.

How to make the comparison useful

The quality of a visual test depends on choosing meaningful capture points and making the comparison conditions reviewable. Before adding coverage, decide what a passing comparison is supposed to establish.

  1. Choose the scope. Capture a component when its isolated appearance matters, a page when the whole layout matters, or a key user-flow state when the transition or visible state matters. An image cannot assess content outside its captured scope.
  2. Make the state reproducible. Arrange the interface so it reaches the intended state before taking the screenshot. If changing data or timing changes the rendered content, reviewers need to know whether the test is comparing the intended state.
  3. Keep baseline and test environments consistent. Use the same rendering environment and settings when generating reference images and running comparisons where practical. Record environment changes that could affect output.
  4. Select comparison behavior deliberately. Decide whether strict pixel differences, tolerated changes, or a layout-focused approach best fits the interface and the risk being checked. A more tolerant comparison can reduce noise, but may also treat some visible differences differently.
  5. Review each flagged change. Determine whether the diff is an expected design change, a real defect, a test-state problem, or capture variation. Accept a new baseline only when the changed output is intended.
  6. Pair visual checks with other tests. Use functional checks for behavior and visual comparisons for rendered appearance. Neither type of test establishes everything about the interface on its own.

Choosing an approach: what to compare

Playwright, Chromatic, and Applitools document different visual-comparison workflows; their published descriptions should not be treated as proof that one method fits every application. Compare approaches against the work your team needs to do:

Decision Question to answer Why it matters
Capture scope Do you need components, whole pages, or selected flow states? The capture determines which visible changes can be flagged.
Comparison behavior Should the test use strict pixel differences, tolerate selected variation, or focus on layout? Different methods can report or ignore different changes.
Dynamic content Can timestamps, account values, or other changing regions be stabilized or handled specially? Uncontrolled changes can make meaningful review harder.
Environment Which browsers, devices, operating systems, and rendering settings are needed? Environment differences can change screenshots independently of product changes.
Review workflow How will a person inspect, discuss, accept, or reject a change? A diff needs a decision before it becomes a trusted baseline.

For reference, Playwright documents built-in screenshot comparisons, Chromatic documents baseline pixel diffs, and Applitools documents its Playwright integration. These descriptions establish the capabilities each source documents, not a universal ranking.

Capture screenshots separately from comparing them

A screenshot service can help produce an image, but capture and visual regression comparison are distinct jobs. A service that returns a screenshot is not, on that fact alone, a baseline manager or image-diff test runner. For an automated regression workflow, confirm that your chosen comparison setup also handles reference images, differences, and review decisions.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It can capture a URL as an image or PDF, but it should be understood as the capture part of a workflow—not as a claim that the API itself compares screenshots with approved baselines. Its clean-capture options may remove consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; turn those steps off when those elements are exactly what the test needs to inspect. The one-call capture below is useful when you need an image to feed into a separate comparison process. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the API details.

Or skip the browser setup

This cURL request captures a page to a WebP file. It captures a screenshot; it does not perform the baseline comparison:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
  • Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; each cleanup step can be turned off.
  • Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed.
  • An MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools.
  • The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Troubleshooting a visual-regression failure

The screenshot changed after a machine or browser update

Check whether the baseline and test run used different operating systems, browser versions, browser settings, hardware, power conditions, or headless behavior. Playwright specifically identifies environment consistency as important for repeatable comparisons. Align the environments where possible, then regenerate baselines only if the rendered change is intended.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only some captures differ across devices

Check viewport and device-pixel-ratio settings before changing the baseline. Chromatic notes that a device-pixel-ratio mismatch can account for an expected difference. Keep the capture configuration consistent for the comparison you intend to make.

A dynamic region changes on every run

Identify whether the changing content is part of what you intend to test. The comparison approach you choose may offer ways to stabilize or treat dynamic data specially; Applitools documents dynamic-data comparison modes. Avoid masking or tolerating a region without considering whether a real visual defect in that area would matter.

The diff shows a large change, but the page seems correct

Confirm that the capture reached the same interface state and scope as the baseline. Then inspect environment, viewport, and rendering settings. If the difference is an intentional product update, review it and accept an updated baseline through your team’s normal process; if not, investigate the code or test setup instead of treating the image change as self-explanatory.

The test passes, but a user-facing visual problem remains

Check whether the affected element was in the captured image and visible at the chosen checkpoint. A passing comparison only says the captured output matched its reference under the selected conditions; it cannot flag a state or region the test never captured. Add a meaningful checkpoint or supplement the visual test with the relevant functional check.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does visual regression testing replace accessibility testing?

No. A screenshot comparison checks rendered pixels or visual patterns, not whether assistive technology can interpret the interface or whether it meets accessibility criteria. Use accessibility checks for those questions.

Can a visual regression test tell me why something changed?

Not by itself. It identifies a difference between captured output and a baseline; diagnosis requires checking the application, test setup, and rendering conditions.
