An Open Graph image appears when someone shares your URL in a social network or messaging app. To control that preview, publish crawlable metadata—at minimum og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url—in the page HTML, and make the referenced image publicly fetchable. Do not rely on client-side JavaScript, meta redirects, or a browser-only rendering step: Apple says Messages link previews do not execute JavaScript or follow meta redirects.
What an Open Graph image is
Open Graph (OG) metadata lets a URL become a rich object when shared. The og:image property points to the representative image; the other core properties identify the page. A crawler retrieves the shared URL, reads the metadata, then fetches the image URL to build a card or message preview.
The image is not the same thing as an HTML <img> used in the article body. It is a social-preview asset, normally designed with text and visual branding that remain legible when a platform crops or scales it.
The required and optional properties
| Property | Purpose | Implementation note |
|---|---|---|
og:title |
Title shown in the rich preview. | Use the page’s actual headline; avoid putting tracking text in it. |
og:type |
Describes the object type. | Use the type appropriate to the page. |
og:image |
Absolute URL of the representative image. | The URL must be reachable by the crawler without a login. |
og:url |
Canonical URL of the shared page. | Use the public, preferred URL, including the correct scheme and path. |
og:image:secure_url |
HTTPS alternative for the image. | Useful when a crawler expects a secure asset URL. |
og:image:type |
MIME type of the image. | Examples include image/png and image/jpeg. |
og:image:width and og:image:height |
Intrinsic image dimensions. | Publish the real pixel dimensions; they do not force every platform to use that ratio. |
og:image:alt |
Description of the image. | This is alternative text describing the image, not a caption displayed over it. |
When you publish more than one og:image, the protocol treats them as an ordered array. Put the preferred image first, then place each image’s structured properties immediately with the image they describe. Otherwise, width, height, type, or alt text can be associated with the wrong asset.

A dependable HTML implementation
Place metadata in the document’s <head>, or configure your framework to emit equivalent tags in the server response:
<head>
<meta property="og:title" content="How to audit a website">
<meta property="og:type" content="article">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/audit">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/audit-og.png">
<meta property="og:image:secure_url" content="https://example.com/images/audit-og.png">
<meta property="og:image:type" content="image/png">
<meta property="og:image:width" content="1200">
<meta property="og:image:height" content="630">
<meta property="og:image:alt" content="Checklist for auditing a website">
</head>
Use absolute URLs, return the correct Content-Type for the image, and allow the service fetching the page and image to connect. A relative path, authentication wall, robots or firewall rule that blocks the crawler, or an image that returns an HTML error page can produce a missing preview.
Static sites
Generate one metadata block per page at build time. Confirm the generated files—not only your template—contain the final title, canonical URL, and image URL.
Single-page applications
An SPA does not automatically require a particular framework, but its initial HTTP response must contain the OG tags for crawlers that do not execute JavaScript. If your app sends an empty shell and inserts metadata after hydration, some previews will be blank. Use server-side rendering, static generation, or an edge/server middleware that emits route-specific tags. Apple’s Messages guidance is explicit: metadata must be available directly on the linked page because its previewer neither follows meta redirects nor runs JavaScript.

Next.js routes
Next.js documents opengraph-image and twitter-image file conventions for route segments. These conventions can generate route-aware metadata and images, but they are a Next.js option, not a requirement for every website. Whichever approach you choose, inspect the final HTML returned for each route.
Choosing image dimensions and format
A 2026 third-party design guide recommends 1200 × 630 pixels in PNG or JPG as a broad starting point. That is a practical design specification, not a universal platform guarantee or an Open Graph protocol requirement. Platforms can crop, constrain ratios, reject large files, or change their preferred formats. Check the current documentation for each network or messenger that matters to your audience.
- Keep important text and logos away from the edges so a crop does not remove them.
- Export a sharp source at the dimensions you publish; do not claim dimensions in metadata that differ from the file.
- Choose PNG for crisp text or transparency and JPG for photographic content when the target platform accepts both.
- Provide meaningful
og:image:alttext that describes the visual content, rather than repeating the headline.
There is no single, evidence-backed universal file-size ceiling or ratio for every current platform. Treat any recommendation as a starting point and verify the actual services where links are shared.
Dynamic and route-specific OG images
For a blog, product catalog, or documentation site, a single generic image wastes the preview’s space. Generate an image from the route’s title, category, author, or product data, then emit that image’s URL in the same response. Keep generation deterministic: a crawler may request the same URL repeatedly, and a stable result prevents cards from changing unexpectedly.

If generation is asynchronous, publish a ready fallback image before the page is shared. Ensure the image URL remains valid after deployment and that old URLs are retained long enough for cached previews to refresh.
How crawlers obtain the preview
- Fetch the shared page. The service requests the URL and reads the response HTML. It may use a distinct user agent and may not run a browser.
- Parse the head. It selects the OG properties and resolves the image URL.
- Fetch the image. The image must be publicly reachable and return an image response, not a redirect chain ending at a login or an error document.
- Cache the result. The service stores the card for a period that differs by platform. A changed file at the same URL may therefore remain unseen until the cache is revalidated.
Because behavior varies, test the exact URL, not only a local development page or an authenticated browser session.
Validation and troubleshooting
The preview has no image
- View the fetched page source and search for
property="og:image". If it appears only after JavaScript runs, move it into server-rendered or static HTML. - Open the image URL in an unauthenticated session and check that it returns the intended file, with a correct MIME type and a successful status.
- Check firewall, bot-management, hotlink-protection, and robots settings that might block the crawler.
- Verify that the URL is absolute and uses the intended hostname and scheme.
The wrong image or title appears
- Look for duplicate OG tags from a theme, plugin, layout, or framework. Remove conflicting values.
- Confirm that
og:urlidentifies the canonical variant you actually shared. - Use the target platform’s current preview or re-scrape inspector where available. Cache controls and refresh procedures are platform-specific; do not assume a single trick works everywhere.
Apple Messages shows no metadata
Make the tags available in the initial response. Apple’s developer note says Messages link previews do not follow meta redirects or run JavaScript, so a client-rendered head or redirect-only metadata will not be discovered.
Structured image data is mismatched
For multiple images, follow the protocol’s ordering rules. Keep each image’s secure URL, type, dimensions, and alt text adjacent to the corresponding og:image entry, and ensure the numbers match the actual file.

The image is stale after an update
Assume the platform has cached both the page and image. Recheck the live HTML and image first, then use the platform’s official inspection or refresh mechanism if one exists. Changing the image URL (for example, by publishing a new versioned filename) can distinguish a new asset, but platform behavior still varies.

A preview tool can reveal what a crawler receives, but always pair it with source inspection and a direct image request. ScreenshotNeo is useful when you need a visual check of the final page: it accepts a URL, removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and reports whether a response was billed. Failed loads, blank pages, bot checks or CAPTCHAs, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can capture the page as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; its MCP tools (take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf) work with Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Every plan includes its features, and the Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card.
cURL (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Use it to see the page as a clean visual: cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots; and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card, with paid plans starting at $5 for 3,000. - Keep metadata fast. Server-rendered tags avoid waiting for client JavaScript and improve compatibility with non-browser crawlers.
- Use stable assets. A durable image URL and long-lived storage reduce broken cards. Version filenames when you intentionally need a new asset.
- Protect origin capacity. Cache generated OG images and avoid rendering a new image on every crawler request.
- Measure the fetch. Log requests for the page and image, status codes, response times, and blocked user agents. This identifies whether failure occurs in HTML retrieval or image retrieval.
- Control screenshot spend. ScreenshotNeo bills only clean shots; its response includes
X-Page-VerdictandX-Billedheaders so automation can distinguish a usable capture from a failed or free result.
Pre-publish checklist
- The initial HTML contains one intentional set of
og:title,og:type,og:image, andog:url. - The canonical and image URLs are absolute, public, and served over HTTPS where required.
- The image response has the correct MIME type, dimensions, and content.
- Optional secure URL, type, dimensions, and descriptive alt text match the actual image.
- Route-specific pages emit route-specific values, including for SPA paths.
- You have checked the target platform’s current ratio, size, and cache behavior.
- You tested the live URL from outside your logged-in browser and recorded the result.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an Open Graph image required for every page?
No. A page can be shared without one, but the receiving service may choose an arbitrary image or show no image. Pages where controlled branding or clarity matters should publish one.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Can I use the same image for Open Graph and Twitter cards?
You can reuse the file, but Open Graph properties alone do not describe every platform’s card system. Add any additional metadata required by the specific service you support.
Should og:image:alt contain the headline?
Only if the headline accurately describes the visual. The property is intended as an image description, not as a duplicate caption.
Why does a private staging URL work in my browser but not in a preview service?
Your browser may have authentication, cookies, or network access unavailable to the crawler. Test a public deployment and ensure both HTML and image requests work without those credentials.
