Remote HTTP servers and local STDIO servers do not fail in the same way. Before changing anything, record the exact error text, HTTP status, server URL, transport, MCP client name and version, and identity provider. Remove tokens, secrets, authorization codes, and private callback data before sharing those records.
Start with the transport and failure stage
Use this quick classification before changing credentials:

The MCP authorization tutorial (July 28, 2026 revision) describes OAuth flows for HTTP-based remote servers. Authorization is optional for MCP servers in general, so a server that uses STDIO or another configured credential mechanism may not have a browser OAuth flow at all.
Capture a reproducible, sanitized record
- Copy the complete error and note whether it appeared during connection, sign-in, callback, token exchange, or tool execution.
- Record the HTTP status and response headers. Keep
WWW-Authenticate; it often identifies the next discovery step. - Write down the exact server URL, including path, scheme, and host, plus the MCP client and version.
- Identify the identity provider and whether the identity is a human user, service account, workload, or agent.
- Redact bearer tokens, client secrets, authorization codes, cookies, and unredacted callback URLs before putting logs in a ticket.
Read the response instead of guessing
Separate an HTTP authentication failure at the MCP endpoint from a tool-level error. A tool can return an application error after the MCP connection is authenticated; changing OAuth settings will not fix that. For an HTTP failure, inspect the status, body, and headers from the response that actually came from the MCP server.

What the status code suggests

A status narrows the search; it does not identify one defective setting by itself. The normative mappings and validation rules are in the MCP Authorization Specification, 2025-11-25 revision.
Inspect a response safely
For a server you are authorized to test, request headers without putting a real token in shell history:
curl -i https://server.example/mcpUse the real endpoint only in your private environment. If you must test an authenticated request, obtain the token through your normal client flow and avoid copying it into shared commands, transcripts, or issue trackers. A 401 response with a WWW-Authenticate header is more useful than a generic client popup because it exposes the server’s challenge.
Fix OAuth discovery and metadata problems
MCP servers using OAuth must publish Protected Resource Metadata. The specification states: “MCP servers MUST implement the OAuth 2.0 Protected Resource Metadata (RFC9728) specification to indicate the locations of authorization servers.” A server can advertise the metadata URL in the resource_metadata parameter of a 401 WWW-Authenticate header or expose it at a supported well-known URI.
- Read the
resource_metadataURL from the 401 challenge, if present, or locate the server’s supported well-known metadata endpoint. - Fetch that document and verify that it is valid JSON and reachable from the client environment.
- Check its
authorization_serversentry. The listed authorization server must be the one that actually issues tokens for this MCP resource. - Open the authorization-server metadata and verify issuer, authorization endpoint, token endpoint, supported response types, and registration capabilities against what the client expects.
- Compare every URL and resource identifier with the endpoint you are calling. Differences in scheme, host, path, or trailing path segment can cause a valid-looking login to produce an unusable token.
If discovery is unreachable, malformed, or internally inconsistent, fix the server or identity-provider configuration rather than broadening client permissions. The metadata requirements are defined in the MCP specification.

Verify that the token is for this MCP server
A successful identity-provider login does not prove that the MCP server will accept the resulting token. Confirm all of the following:
- The client actually sent an access token on the MCP request.
- The token is unexpired and has the expected issuer.
- The token’s audience identifies this MCP server (or the exact resource identifier it expects).
- The token contains the scopes required for the operation.
A token issued for a downstream API is not interchangeable with an MCP-server token. The MCP authorization specification requires audience validation and prohibits simply forwarding the client token to an upstream API. Do not disable validation or pass the token through “temporarily”; obtain a token for the MCP resource and configure the server’s upstream credentials separately.
Resolve a 403: scopes, roles, and resource permissions
When the token is valid but the operation is forbidden, inspect the scope in the challenge or error and then check the identity’s authorization at every layer:

- Confirm that the user, service account, or workload identity has that scope granted by consent or policy.
- Confirm that the MCP server’s resource-level policy allows the identity to call the specific tool.
- Confirm that the underlying product or API also grants the required permission.
- Request the narrowest role that covers the operation; do not grant administrator access as a diagnostic shortcut.

- The redirect URI registered in the identity application must exactly match the callback used by the client.
- The configured base URL and application ID must match the server configuration.
- The runtime
reference_idmust be the value expected by the integration. - Tenant and application restrictions must allow the signed-in account.
- Consent must be configured for the requested permissions.
- Popup or embedded-browser blocking can prevent the callback even when the credentials are correct.
Microsoft documents an example message, “OAuth authentication failed: The base URL in your authentication configuration does not match the server URL. (HTTP 401).” Treat that as an integration-specific example, not a universal MCP error string. Microsoft’s documented 307 Temporary Redirect token-endpoint limitation is also a Copilot integration constraint, not a general rule for every MCP client.
Microsoft Entra-protected MCP servers
For an Entra-secured server, compare the canonical server URL, Application ID URI, and OAuth resource value. The authorization server’s issuer must match the issuer the server accepts. Microsoft’s Entra MCP server guide covers these relationships. A mismatch can yield a 401 even when the account signed in successfully.
Google and Google Cloud MCP servers
Google states that “Some Google and Google Cloud MCP server endpoints don’t require authentication.” Do not add OAuth or an API key merely because another endpoint uses it. IAM-dependent services do not accept standard API-key credentials, while some non-IAM services, such as Google Maps, do; check the exact endpoint’s documentation at Google’s MCP authentication page.
Google’s remote MCP servers also do not support Dynamic Client Registration or OAuth Client ID Metadata Documents. A client flow that depends on either feature can fail before token issuance; use a client-registration method supported by that server instead. These limitations and endpoint differences are provider-specific.
Local STDIO: troubleshoot the process, not browser OAuth

- Run the MCP client and server under the same account and working directory used in production.
- Verify that required environment-variable names are present without printing their values.
- Check that credential files are readable by the server process and are not owned by a different account.
- Confirm that the client is launching the intended executable, virtual environment, or container image.
- Enable the credential library’s safe diagnostic logging, if available, and distinguish “credential not found” from “permission denied.”
Do not apply remote OAuth discovery fixes to a local process that never makes an HTTP authorization request. Conversely, do not assume a local environment variable will satisfy a remote server’s audience and scope checks.

Retest one change at a time
After identifying a mismatch, change only that setting, retry once, and record the new status and sanitized headers. This makes it clear whether discovery, token acquisition, token validation, or authorization changed. Escalate discovery and invalid-token failures to the MCP server or identity-provider owner with the redacted challenge and metadata JSON. Escalate a 403 to the resource owner or cloud administrator when the required scope or role is not granted.
Never solve an authentication failure by disabling token validation, forwarding a client token to a downstream API, granting broad scopes by default, or sharing credentials.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a login succeed while the MCP request still returns 401?
Yes. The identity provider can authenticate the user while issuing a token with the wrong MCP audience, issuer, resource, or scope, or while the client fails to attach the token to the MCP request.
Is an API key an acceptable fallback for OAuth?
Only when the specific MCP endpoint documents API-key authentication. Google notes that IAM-dependent services do not accept standard API keys, so substituting one can create a different authentication failure.
What should I send to an administrator when requesting access?
Send the server URL, client and version, transport, timestamp, status, redacted WWW-Authenticate header, relevant metadata JSON, and the missing scope or permission. Never send bearer tokens, client secrets, or authorization codes.
