If you need a repeatable layout, chart, badge, thumbnail, or composite, draw pixels with a graphics library or browser canvas. If you need a new scene or an edit described in natural language, call an image-generation API. This guide shows both workflows, with runnable Python, JavaScript, shell, and API patterns, plus advice on formats, transparency, fonts, security, failures, and production operation.
Choose drawing or generative synthesis first
Programmatic drawing is deterministic: the same inputs produce the same geometry, text placement, colors, and output (subject to fonts and library versions). It is the best fit for invoices, social cards, dashboards, diagrams, certificates, product overlays, and batch conversions.
Generative synthesis is model-driven: your code sends a prompt, and often one or more input images, to a hosted model that returns newly generated or edited pixels. It is useful for concepts, illustrations, variations, background replacement, and semantic edits. Results can vary, so store prompts, model settings, input files, and output metadata when reproducibility matters.
| Need | Good starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Precise text, shapes, overlays, or raster compositing in Python | Pillow with ImageDraw |
Direct control over pixels, layers, alpha, and file output. |
| Drawing or compositing in a web page | HTML Canvas 2D | Runs in the browser and can draw images, generated data, and user input. |
| Batch conversion, resizing, and shell pipelines | ImageMagick | Command-line operations cover creation, drawing, transformation, and format conversion. |
| A new image from a natural-language prompt or an edit guided by an image | A hosted image API | The provider performs semantic synthesis and returns image data. |
Compare options on deterministic precision, runtime (server, browser, or shell), whether you need synthesis or editing, input and output formats, transparency requirements, and provider limits. Available documentation does not establish a universal winner for quality, speed, or total cost.

Generate a deterministic image with Python and Pillow
Pillow’s ImageDraw context draws onto an image in place. The following script creates an RGB canvas, adds a background, rounded card, text, and a progress bar, then writes a PNG.
from PIL import Image, ImageDraw, ImageFont
WIDTH, HEIGHT = 1200, 630
img = Image.new("RGB", (WIDTH, HEIGHT), "#101827")
draw = ImageDraw.Draw(img)
# Card and accent
card = (70, 70, WIDTH - 70, HEIGHT - 70)
draw.rounded_rectangle(card, radius=28, fill="#18263d", outline="#31496d", width=3)
draw.ellipse((105, 120, 185, 200), fill="#55d6be")
draw.text((215, 118), "Build report", fill="#ffffff")
draw.text((105, 245), "Images generated by code", fill="#ffffff")
draw.text((105, 300), "Repeatable pixels, predictable output", fill="#9fb3ce")
# Progress meter
draw.rounded_rectangle((105, 430, 1095, 478), radius=20, fill="#263a5d")
draw.rounded_rectangle((105, 430, 850, 478), radius=20, fill="#55d6be")
draw.text((105, 500), "76% complete", fill="#dce8f7")
img.save("build-report.png", format="PNG", optimize=True)
For custom type, load a TrueType font with ImageFont.truetype(). Font loading depends on third-party font support in your Pillow build, so package the exact font files you are licensed to use and test on the same operating system as production. Do not assume a developer laptop’s fonts exist in a container.
Use a transparent layer for compositing
Keep overlays separate when you need reusable badges or watermarks. Draw on an RGBA layer, then alpha-composite it over the base.
from PIL import Image, ImageDraw
base = Image.open("photo.jpg").convert("RGBA")
overlay = Image.new("RGBA", base.size, (0, 0, 0, 0))
draw = ImageDraw.Draw(overlay)
draw.rounded_rectangle((30, 30, 360, 105), radius=18, fill=(0, 0, 0, 165))
draw.text((55, 52), "DRAFT", fill=(255, 255, 255, 235))
result = Image.alpha_composite(base, overlay)
result.save("photo-draft.png", "PNG")
Convert deliberately before saving: RGB cannot retain transparency, while RGBA can. PNG is a sensible lossless choice for text and UI artwork; JPEG is smaller for photographic output but has no alpha channel and introduces lossy compression.

Draw an external image safely
const image = new Image();
image.crossOrigin = 'anonymous';
image.onload = () => {
ctx.drawImage(image, 760, 120, 300, 300);
};
image.src = 'https://example.com/allowed-image.jpg';
The server hosting an external image must send an appropriate CORS header. Otherwise the browser may mark the canvas as tainted; pixel reads and toDataURL() can then fail with a security exception. This is a browser security constraint, not a problem with the drawImage() syntax. If you control both applications, configure CORS before drawing. If you do not, fetch the asset through a server you control, subject to the site’s terms and access controls.
Use ImageMagick for shell and batch workflows
ImageMagick’s magick command can create canvases, resize and transform files, draw primitives, and convert formats. A simple generated card is:
magick -size 1200x630 xc:'#101827'
-fill '#18263d' -draw 'roundrectangle 70,70 1130,560 28,28'
-fill white -pointsize 52 -gravity northwest
-annotate +105+260 'Images generated by code'
-fill '#9fb3ce' -pointsize 30
-annotate +105+325 'ImageMagick command line'
build-report.png
For a batch resize that preserves aspect ratio while limiting the long edge:
magick mogrify -path resized -resize '1600x1600>' -strip input/*.jpg
Use a separate output directory with -path so the originals are not overwritten. ImageMagick supports vector-oriented drawing through SVG and MVG workflows. For complex graphics, generating SVG is usually clearer than hand-authoring a long MVG command; render that SVG to PNG or another delivery format as the final step.
Generate or edit pixels with a hosted image API
Use an image API when the request is semantic: “make a watercolor map,” “remove the background,” or “change the jacket to red.” OpenAI’s documentation recommends the Image API for one generation or edit request and the Responses API when an application needs a conversational, multi-step image workflow. Google documents equivalent Python and JavaScript patterns for obtaining image output and writing it to a PNG. Provider model names, eligibility, dimensions, output formats, and limits change, so verify the current provider reference immediately before implementation.

Provider-neutral request pattern
- Keep the API key in an environment variable or secret manager, never in browser JavaScript or a committed file.
- Send a prompt and, for an edit, the input image in the provider’s documented multipart or encoded format.
- Request an output format supported by the selected model. PNG is commonly the default; JPEG or WebP may be available for supported models. Transparent backgrounds generally require PNG or WebP.
- Read the returned bytes or base64 field, validate the content type and size, and write the file atomically.
- Persist the prompt, model identifier, dimensions, quality setting, seed or request identifier when supplied, and a hash of input assets for auditability.
The exact endpoint and SDK call are provider-specific and intentionally change over time. Follow the current OpenAI or Google examples rather than copying an old model name into production.
Validate and protect returned data
- Set a connect and overall timeout; retry only transient failures with exponential backoff and a cap.
- Check HTTP status before decoding response data and handle rate-limit headers when available.
- Reject unexpectedly large responses and verify the decoded bytes are an image before publishing them.
- Apply content moderation, copyright, privacy, and user-consent policies appropriate to your application.
- Do not log prompts that contain secrets or personal data unless your retention policy permits it.
Control size, quality, and transparency
Image settings are not universal. OpenAI documents controls for size, quality, format, compression, and background, with model-specific constraints. Use the provider’s listed square, landscape, and portrait sizes where possible; custom dimensions may have additional restrictions. A transparent background can reduce compositing work but requires an alpha-capable output such as PNG or WebP. For deterministic drawing, choose dimensions based on the final display density and keep a single source of truth for layout coordinates.
Performance and reliability in production
Local drawing
- Reuse fonts and drawing objects where the library permits; font parsing for every request is wasteful.
- Process large batches with bounded concurrency so memory does not grow without limit.
- Prefer streaming or temporary files for very large images, and remove temporary files after a successful upload.
- Record library versions and color-management assumptions; upgrades can alter text metrics or rendering.
Browser rendering
- Move expensive canvas work to an
OffscreenCanvasworker when the UI must remain responsive. - Scale for device pixel ratio, but cap the backing resolution to avoid excessive memory use on high-density screens.
- Wait for fonts and images to finish loading before exporting; otherwise text can fall back and images can be missing.
Hosted APIs
- Queue non-interactive jobs and make requests idempotent so a retry does not create duplicate records.
- Cache identical deterministic requests where your provider terms allow it.
- Design for timeouts, rate limits, content-policy refusals, malformed output, and provider maintenance.
- Keep an explicit per-request cost and quota counter; the documentation reviewed here does not establish comparative prices or latency.
Or skip the browser setup
If your “generated image” is actually a screenshot of a web page, you can avoid installing and maintaining a headless browser with ScreenshotNeo. It accepts one URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options. A cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same call in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const bytes = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
require('fs').writeFileSync('shot.webp', bytes);
ScreenshotNeo also provides full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and page controls, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom JavaScript and CSS, clicks, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, an OpenAPI specification, and compatibility with parameter names used by other screenshot APIs. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan, and yearly billing gives two months free. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try it without a card.

Troubleshooting checklist
Text is missing or has the wrong shape
Confirm the font file exists in the runtime, load it before measuring text, and check that the selected font supports the characters. Browser canvas may export before web fonts finish loading; wait for document.fonts.ready.
Canvas export throws a security error
An external image likely tainted the canvas. Set crossOrigin before src and configure the image server’s CORS response, or proxy the asset through a server you control.
The output is unexpectedly huge
Inspect pixel dimensions, device-pixel-ratio scaling, and embedded metadata. Resize at the end of the pipeline, choose JPEG or WebP for photographic content, and avoid repeatedly re-encoding a lossy file.
An API request times out or is refused
Check the current model’s eligibility, dimensions, content policy, quota, and rate limits. Use bounded retries only for transient errors, log the provider request identifier, and surface a useful status to the caller instead of silently returning a blank file.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I generate an image without an external service?
Yes. Pillow, Canvas, and ImageMagick can create and transform images locally. They draw what you specify; they do not provide natural-language scene synthesis by themselves.
Which format should I use for a transparent image?
Use PNG or a WebP configuration that preserves alpha. JPEG does not support transparency.
Is Canvas suitable for server-side image generation?
Canvas is primarily a browser API. For server-side jobs, use a server graphics library or a browser runtime designed for automation, and account for font, image-loading, and CORS differences.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How do I make generated files reproducible?
Pin library and font versions for drawn graphics. For model output, record the prompt, model, settings, input assets, and request metadata; even then, provider behavior can change.
