Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11The reliable pattern is simple: launch a browser, create an isolated context, navigate to the page, wait for a meaningful application state, capture the viewport, full page or a locator, then save or process the resulting bytes before closing the browser. The difficult part is not calling screenshot(); it is making the capture deterministic in local runs and CI.
The browser-automation screenshot workflow
Use this lifecycle for most screenshot jobs:
- Launch the automation framework and a browser.
- Create an isolated browser context or page with an explicit viewport and, when needed, a device profile.
- Navigate to the target URL.
- Wait for an application-specific stable condition, such as a key locator becoming visible. Use network idle only when it represents a genuinely settled page.
- Capture the viewport, the complete scrollable page, or one element.
- Write the image to a deterministic path, or keep the returned bytes for upload, comparison or further processing.
- Close the page, context and browser in a
finallypath so CI workers do not leak processes.
A fixed sleep can hide race conditions: a slow API, late web font, image lazy-loading or animation may still change the pixels after the timer expires. Prefer a state your application exposes.
Playwright: a complete screenshot script
Install Playwright and its browser binaries in the project that will run the script:
npm install -D playwright
npx playwright install chromium
This script captures a viewport, a full page and a header element. It also creates the output directory and closes resources even when navigation or capture fails.

const fs = require('node:fs/promises');
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
await fs.mkdir('artifacts', { recursive: true });
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const context = await browser.newContext({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
});
const page = await context.newPage();
try {
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.locator('h1').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'artifacts/home.png' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'artifacts/home-full.png', fullPage: true });
await page.locator('header').screenshot({ path: 'artifacts/header.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
The first image is the current viewport. fullPage: true captures the page’s full scrollable height. A locator screenshot captures only the matching element, which is useful for cards, receipts and component-level visual tests. Replace h1 and header with selectors that are stable in your application, preferably data attributes rather than styling classes.
Return bytes instead of writing a file
Omit path and Playwright returns a buffer. This is preferable when you upload directly to object storage, send an image to a comparison service or attach it to a test report.
const image = await page.screenshot({ type: 'png' });
await fs.writeFile('artifacts/from-buffer.png', image);
Relevant capture controls include clip for a rectangle, mask and maskColor for volatile or private regions, omitBackground for transparency, quality for JPEG/WebP output, scale for device-pixel density, and animation controls when motion would make pixels unstable. Use PNG for lossless visual comparisons; JPEG or WebP can reduce artifact size when exact pixel equality is not required.
Stabilize the page before capture
- Set the viewport or device profile explicitly; otherwise a developer laptop and a CI worker can produce different wrapping and screenshots.
- Wait for the locator that proves the application is ready, then wait for fonts, images or a chart’s own ready signal if those are loaded separately.
- Disable or await CSS and Web Animations when a transition can land between frames.
- Mask personal data, timestamps, rotating adverts, tokens and other intentionally variable regions.
- For lazy-loaded pages, scroll or use a page design that loads images before the full-page capture; verify that image natural dimensions are nonzero.
Puppeteer alternative
Puppeteer exposes the same basic lifecycle and is a good fit for Chrome-focused automation.

const fs = require('node:fs/promises');
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
await fs.mkdir('artifacts', { recursive: true });
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
try {
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.waitForSelector('h1', { visible: true });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'artifacts/example.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Puppeteer’s screenshot method returns a promise. With the appropriate encoding it can return a base64 string; otherwise it returns a byte array suitable for writing or uploading. Operations on the page and browser context wait for an in-progress screenshot to finish, so avoid starting unrelated navigation while a capture is running.

Cypress screenshots in tests and CI
Cypress is test-runner first. Put a screenshot in a test after asserting the state that matters:
it('captures the checkout state', () => {
cy.visit('/checkout');
cy.get('[data-testid="order-summary"]').should('be.visible');
cy.screenshot('checkout', {
capture: 'fullPage',
blackout: ['[data-testid="email"]'],
overwrite: true,
});
});
Cypress supports viewport, full-page, runner and element screenshots. Its options include clip, blackout, padding, overwrite and controls for animations and timers. The example blacks out an email field before the image is written.
By default, Cypress writes screenshots to cypress/screenshots. During cypress run, it also captures a failure screenshot unless screenshotOnRunFailure is disabled. Upload that directory as a CI artifact alongside the test report; otherwise the most useful diagnostic evidence disappears when the worker is deleted.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteViewport, full-page or element?
| Capture | Use it for | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Viewport | What a user sees above the fold, responsive checks and monitoring | Dimensions come from the explicit viewport/device profile. |
| Full page | Long documents, landing pages and complete receipts | Lazy images and sticky elements may need special handling. |
| Element | Components, invoices, cards and focused visual tests | The selector must resolve to the intended visible element. |
Capture a viewport when the question is “what appears on screen?” Capture full page when document completeness matters. Capture an element when unrelated page content would add noise or expose data.
Deterministic files and CI retention
Use a directory created by the job and a name containing the test or URL slug, viewport and an optional build identifier. Do not use an unbounded timestamp if a later step expects a known path. In Cypress, set overwrite: true only when replacement is intentional; otherwise preserve each failure artifact. In Playwright and Puppeteer, write to a job-specific directory and let the CI system retain it with the test report.

For visual comparisons, keep browser version, viewport, device scale, locale, timezone and test data stable. A screenshot can differ because a date, animation, font fallback or geolocation changed even when the application is correct.
Common failures and fixes
The screenshot is blank or only partly rendered
Cause: capture ran before the app mounted, an iframe or image was still loading, or a navigation error was ignored. Fix: assert a meaningful locator, check the response and console logs, wait for the component’s ready state, and verify image dimensions before capture.
Recommended Free Tools
Full-page output contains missing lazy images
Cause: images load only after entering the viewport. Fix: trigger the page’s lazy-loading behavior by scrolling in controlled increments, wait for network activity or image completion, then capture. A fixed delay alone is less reliable than checking the actual images.
CI and local images do not match
Cause: different viewport, browser build, fonts, device scale, locale, timezone or animation timing. Fix: pin those inputs, install the same browser revision, wait for fonts and disable motion. Mask timestamps and other expected variation.
Navigation times out
Cause: the site never reaches the selected load condition, a third-party request hangs, or the environment cannot reach the host. Fix: use an application-appropriate readiness locator, inspect network and browser logs, allow only the timeout your CI budget permits, and fail with a diagnostic screenshot or trace rather than silently producing an invalid image.

Element capture fails because the locator matches nothing
Cause: a selector changed, the element is inside a frame, or it is rendered only after an interaction. Fix: use a stable test identifier, wait for visibility, switch to the correct frame, and reproduce the same click or authentication steps before capture.
Private information appears in artifacts
Cause: screenshots were retained without masking. Fix: use Playwright masks or Cypress blackout selectors, remove tokens from URLs, use synthetic accounts and restrict CI artifact access. Treat screenshots as production data.
When to use an API instead of managing a browser
A local script is best when you need custom application logic, authenticated flows, or assertions tightly coupled to a test. A hosted screenshot API is simpler for scheduled captures, content pipelines and one-off URLs where maintaining browser binaries, fonts, sandboxes and CI workers is unnecessary.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF, while the service can accept consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture. Those cleanup steps can be switched off.
Here is a cURL request; the ScreenshotNeo documentation lists the complete parameter set:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same call in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const data = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
require('node:fs').writeFileSync('shot.webp', data);
ScreenshotNeo has 63 options for cases that otherwise require browser code: full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or any viewport, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/landscape/page ranges, HTML/CSS rendering, custom JavaScript and CSS, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for selectors/delay/network idle, blocked ads/trackers/requests/resource types, custom headers/cookies/user agents/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable cache TTL, signed public image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work for easier migration.

FAQ
Should screenshots run inside the test or in a separate job?
Keep assertion screenshots in the test so the image corresponds to the exact failing state. Use a separate scheduled job for broad URL monitoring or bulk captures.
Which image format is safest for visual regression?
PNG is the usual choice because it is lossless. Choose JPEG or WebP when smaller artifacts matter more than exact pixel preservation.
How do I capture an authenticated page?
Authenticate in the same context before navigation to the target state, or load a prepared storage state. Never commit credentials or place live tokens in screenshot filenames or URLs.
