Microsoft Edge can capture an HTML document as an image, but its built-in Screenshot (formerly Web Capture) instructions do not promise JPEG output. Open the .html file, choose Settings and more (…) > Screenshot (or press Ctrl+Shift+S), select Capture full page or Capture area, save the result, check the actual file type, and convert it with a separate image converter if it is not already JPEG.
What Edge can and cannot do natively
Edge captures the rendered document—the page as the browser displays it—not the HTML source code. The built-in tool can save a full page or a selected region as an image. Microsoft’s instructions do not establish that the save operation encodes the image as JPEG, so do not assume that a file ending in .jpg is actually JPEG data. Inspect the saved file and perform a real conversion when necessary.
Microsoft calls the feature Screenshot in current documentation; older Edge instructions and interfaces call it Web capture. Microsoft’s policy documentation lists support on Windows and macOS from Edge version 87. An administrator can disable the feature. That policy entry does not support Android or iOS, so do not generalize the desktop workflow to every mobile Edge release.
Step-by-step: save an HTML document from Edge

Open the document
Double-click the
.htmlfile, open it from Edge’s file picker, or navigate to its web address. If the document is already displayed, leave that tab active. Open Screenshot
Select Settings and more (…) > Screenshot. On supported desktop versions, the shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+S. If your interface says Web capture, select that command instead; it is the earlier name for the same feature.

Choose the capture scope
Choose Capture full page for the complete rendered document, including content below the fold, or Capture area to drag around one region. Full-page capture is appropriate for an article or long report; area capture is better for a chart, hero panel, or form.

Review the image
Inspect the preview for clipped content, missing images, unexpected scroll position, or overlays. Repeat the capture after dismissing a banner or waiting for content that loads late.

Save the capture
Use the save control in the capture interface and choose a folder. Keep the original HTML file as well; the image is a raster snapshot and cannot replace the document’s structure or links.

Confirm that the saved file is really JPEG
Check the file’s properties or open it in an image application that reports the format. Look at the type reported by the operating system, not only the filename extension. A PNG renamed to .jpg is still PNG data and may fail in software that expects JPEG.

If Edge saved PNG, WebP, or another format, open that file in a trusted image-conversion tool, select JPEG as the output format, save a new file, and verify the new file’s reported type. Do not delete the original until the JPEG opens correctly. The Edge capture documentation explains how to save an image but does not specify a native JPEG encoder, so this verification step is essential.
Capture full page or capture an area?

Use Print when you need paginated output
Printing is a separate workflow and produces a page-oriented layout rather than one continuous screenshot. Press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS, then inspect the preview. Edge’s print controls include scale, margins, and background graphics. The Microsoft print instructions do not identify JPEG as a print destination, so use Print when pagination or a printable PDF is the goal, not as proof of direct JPEG export.
Print preview can change line breaks, page boundaries, and background treatment. If visual fidelity to the browser viewport matters, Screenshot is the more direct route; if a multi-page paper layout matters, Print gives you the controls you need before producing the print output.

The Microsoft Edge Add-ons listing for PageSaver advertises full-page screenshots, webpage image conversion including JPG, and image resizing. It is not an Edge-native feature. The listing reports version 2.5.0, updated August 19, 2026, and discloses collection of personal data. Review the extension’s current permissions and privacy disclosure before installing it, especially for confidential HTML files. The listing itself is the basis for these capabilities; it does not establish independent performance results.

Troubleshooting Edge captures
Screenshot or Web capture is missing
- Update Edge and check whether your build uses the newer Screenshot label.
- Try the Ctrl+Shift+S shortcut.
- Your organization may have disabled the feature through the
WebCaptureEnabledpolicy. Contact the administrator rather than attempting to bypass that policy. - Confirm that you are using a desktop Windows or macOS installation covered by Microsoft’s policy documentation; that entry does not list Android or iOS support.
The saved file is not JPEG
That is expected when Edge chooses another image format. Convert the actual file with an image converter and verify the output type. Changing only the extension does not perform conversion.
The page is incomplete or shows a popup
Dismiss cookie notices, newsletter prompts, chat panels, and other overlays before taking the capture. Wait for the document to finish loading, then recapture. For a long page, compare the full-page preview with the source tab to find sections that did not render.
Images, fonts, or styles are missing
Check the original tab first. A local HTML file can reference external stylesheets, fonts, scripts, or images that are unavailable offline or blocked by permissions. Resolve those loading problems in the page itself, reload it, and capture again. The screenshot tool records what Edge successfully renders.
The result is too large or awkward to use
Use Capture area for a focused image, or produce several meaningful sections instead of one extremely tall file. Keep the full capture as an archive and create smaller derivatives only after you have verified the original.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does converting the capture to JPEG preserve the HTML’s links and text structure?
No. JPEG is a raster image. It records the pixels visible in the rendered page, so links, selectable text, form controls, and document structure are not retained.
Can I keep an editable version after making the JPEG?
Yes. Keep the original HTML together with its stylesheets, scripts, and assets. Treat the JPEG as a view-only derivative rather than the source document.
Why might a JPEG look different from the browser tab?
A capture records the rendered state at one moment. Late-loading assets, overlays, blocked resources, responsive layout changes, or print pagination can make the output differ; review the page and capture settings before saving the final file.
