To capture a website with Playwright MCP, connect @playwright/mcp@latest to your MCP client, ask the assistant to open the URL, then call the browser_take_screenshot tool. You can capture the visible viewport, one element, or the complete scrollable page, and save the result as PNG, JPEG, or WebP.
What you need before taking a screenshot
- An MCP client that supports Playwright MCP (for example, a client with an MCP server configuration screen or file).
- The
@playwright/mcp@latestpackage. The documented basic server command usesnpx; follow your chosen client’s current setup instructions for the exact configuration format. - Permission to browse the target site, including any required login, cookies, or network access.
Playwright MCP downloads its browser automatically on first use. The documented runtime is headed by default; add the documented --headless option when you need a browser without a visible window. Configuration labels and available flags can change, so verify them in the official setup guide.
Connect Playwright MCP to your client
- Open your MCP client’s server settings or its configuration file.
- Add a server that runs the package with
npxand the package name@playwright/mcp@latest, using the syntax specified by that client. - Save the configuration and restart or reload the client if it does not discover the server immediately.
- Confirm that Playwright tools appear in the assistant’s tool list. Do not enable
browser_run_code_unsafefor routine screenshots; the setup documentation warns that it executes arbitrary JavaScript in the server process and is equivalent to remote-code execution, so it is intended only for trusted clients.
Navigate, understand, and capture
The normal MCP cycle is navigation, an accessibility snapshot, interaction, and an updated snapshot. A snapshot gives the assistant structured text, roles, and references; it is not an image. After navigation, ask the assistant to open the page you want:

Examples:
Take a screenshot of the current page and save it as homepage.png.Take a full-page screenshot including content below the fold.Take a screenshot of just the login form.(The assistant can use a snapshot reference or an appropriate selector.)
For an explicit full-page call, use browser_take_screenshot { fullPage: true, filename: "homepage.png" }. For an element, first request an accessibility snapshot, identify the element reference, and pass it as target; alternatively use a unique selector where supported.
Format and filename
Set type to png, jpeg, or webp. If the format is not specified, the filename extension can determine it; otherwise PNG is the default. For example:

Resolution scale
scale: "css" produces CSS-pixel dimensions. scale: "device" uses the device pixel ratio for a higher-resolution image, useful when the screenshot will be inspected or printed at larger size.

Viewport image
Open https://example.com, wait for the page to load, then take a screenshot of the current viewport and save it as example.png.
Full-page documentation capture
Go to https://example.com/docs. Take a full-page screenshot including content below the fold, use WebP format, and save it as docs.webp.
One component
Open https://example.com/login, take an accessibility snapshot, then capture only the login form as login-form.png.
Visual verification after interaction
Open https://example.com, inspect the page structure, click the element labelled “Pricing,” take a fresh snapshot, and capture the resulting viewport as pricing.png.
Use a new snapshot after navigation or another page-changing action. A reference from an earlier snapshot may no longer identify the intended element.

Screenshot versus accessibility snapshot
A screenshot is a visual artifact for checking layout, colors, canvas or chart rendering, and documenting a bug. It is not the right interface for clicking or reading a page programmatically. As the official reference puts it, “Screenshots are for looking at, not for acting on — use browser_snapshot to get refs to interact with.”
An accessibility snapshot exposes structured text, roles, and element references so the assistant can understand and interact with controls. Use both when necessary: take a snapshot to locate a component or button, interact with it, then take a screenshot to verify the visual result. See the screenshot reference and snapshot reference.

- Scope: viewport for the visible state,
targetfor one component, orfullPagefor a complete document. - Format: PNG for lossless UI detail, JPEG when a smaller photographic file is acceptable, or WebP when your workflow supports it.
- Scale: CSS for predictable CSS-pixel sizing; device for device-pixel-ratio detail.
- Runtime: headed mode when you need to watch the browser; headless mode for an invisible automated run.
- Understanding: snapshot for structure and interaction; screenshot for appearance.
Troubleshooting
The client cannot find Playwright tools
Check that the server entry uses npx and @playwright/mcp@latest, then reload or restart the client. Use that client’s official MCP configuration instructions rather than copying a configuration format from another client.
The browser does not start
Allow the first-use browser download to finish and check that the environment permits the required browser process. In a restricted CI environment, verify browser dependencies and network policy before retrying.
The screenshot shows only the top of a long page
Request fullPage: true. Do not also provide target; those modes are mutually exclusive.

An element reference no longer works
Refs are valid only for their snapshot. Navigate, reload, or interact, then request a fresh accessibility snapshot and use its new reference.

Use scale: "device" for device-pixel-ratio resolution, or capture the relevant element instead of a small viewport. Confirm that the target page itself has finished rendering before capture.
The output format is unexpected
Set type explicitly to png, jpeg, or webp, and give the filename a matching extension.
A page requires login or blocks automation
Authenticate through the browser flow permitted by your organization, preserve the required session, and capture only pages you are authorized to access. A screenshot request does not bypass access controls or bot checks.

- Wait for the page’s meaningful content before capturing; a navigation response alone may precede client-side rendering.
- Use a named filename in repeatable jobs so downstream steps can find the artifact deterministically.
- Capture a snapshot immediately before selecting an element, particularly after navigation, a modal opening, or a route change.
- Prefer full-page captures for documentation only when a very tall image is practical; use element captures for focused bug reports.
- Keep the unsafe JavaScript execution tool disabled unless the MCP client is trusted and the risk is understood.
