To see an older version of a webpage, search its URL in the Internet Archive Wayback Machine, then choose an available capture from the calendar. To preserve a page as it looks now, use the Wayback Machine’s Save Page Now tool and keep the archived URL it returns. These are archived webpage captures, not a guaranteed, complete set of static screenshots: pages, images, styles, and interactive features may be missing.
How to view a website’s capture history
- Open the Wayback Machine.
- Enter the full URL of the page you want to inspect. If you search only for a domain, you will see captures associated with that domain, but that does not mean every page on the site was captured.
- Review the available dates and select a capture. If you need a particular page, search for its direct URL rather than assuming a capture of the homepage or domain includes it.
- Check the archived page itself, including important images, styles, links, and interactive elements. The archive can preserve useful content without reproducing every part of the original page.
The Wayback Machine shows the captures it has for a URL; it is not a complete record of every page at every point in time. The Internet Archive explains capture navigation and status information in its Wayback Machine help guide.
Read the capture date and status carefully
Use the timestamp in the archived URL to identify the capture you are viewing. The Help Center describes calendar colors as indicating response classes: blue for 2xx, green for 3xx, orange for 4xx, and red for 5xx. A calendar marker alone does not prove that the captured page contains the exact text or assets you need; open it and inspect the rendered content. An archived link may lead to a nearby capture, and a resource that was not captured may resolve to the live web. For a citation or record, preserve the archived URL and confirm its timestamp and content.
How to save a webpage now
- Open the Internet Archive’s Save Page Now page.
- Enter the URL of the individual page you want to preserve and submit it.
- When the save completes, copy and retain the returned archived URL. Open it to confirm that the capture is accessible and includes the page details that matter to you.
- If the page is important, inspect representative images, styles, and links rather than assuming they all replay correctly.
Save Page Now is for a single entered page, not a site-wide crawl. The Internet Archive says it saves the page, including images and CSS, but does not save outlinks or initiate a crawl of the whole site. Its help document also identifies crawling and SSL-related exceptions. Use the browser extension for quicker lookups
If you often check pages while browsing, the Wayback Machine browser extension can surface history tools without requiring you to manually open the archive first. The Internet Archive’s extension page describes oldest- and newest-capture access, a calendar overview, saving a page, and looking up a page that is missing from the archive. It lists Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari 14; check the relevant browser’s store for current availability and compatibility before installing it. The extension is a convenience for finding or saving captures; it does not make the archive complete. You still need to select and inspect the capture you intend to use.

What archived pages can and cannot preserve
A capture may be absent
A missing result does not prove that a page never existed. According to the Internet Archive Help Center, pages may be absent because crawlers did not discover the site, the page was password-protected, blocked by robots.txt, inaccessible, or excluded at the owner’s request. A capture can also exist for a domain while the particular subpage you need has no capture.
A replay may not match the original page
Archived pages can lose images or styling when the associated assets were not captured or cannot be replayed. A broken or gray image can mean the image itself is missing from the archive. JavaScript that depends on the original server, forms, and other interactive features may also fail, while simpler HTML is generally easier to preserve and replay. These limitations are documented in the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine guidance.

Check the material you plan to rely on
- Confirm the timestamp in the archived URL and make sure the displayed page corresponds to the date you need.
- Open key images and follow important links; do not assume a replayed page has archived every asset.
- For dynamic pages, check whether the relevant text or behavior is actually present in the capture.
- When sharing or citing the archived version, use its archived URL, not a live page URL that may change.

Archive-It is an organizational service, not a prerequisite for an individual who wants to check a page or save one URL. The Internet Archive discusses it alongside Save Page Now in its Save Pages help document.
When a missing or broken capture needs troubleshooting
No capture appears for the URL
- Check the exact address. Search the page’s full URL, including its path, rather than only the domain. A capture of the site’s front page does not establish that a deeper page was captured.
- Try a different form of the address. If you know the page used an alternate URL or redirect, search that URL as well. A redirect response and the destination page may have separate capture histories.
- Consider access restrictions. Password protection, robots.txt blocking, inaccessibility, or an owner exclusion can prevent a page from appearing in the archive.
- Do not treat absence as proof. A missing capture only tells you that the archive does not show one for the address and period you checked.
The capture opens but looks incomplete
- Images are broken or gray: the image may not have been captured. Check other captures near the date, if any, and inspect the image URL separately.
- Styles are missing: the CSS may not be available or may not replay. The fact that Save Page Now attempts to save CSS does not guarantee every resource will be preserved.
- Buttons, forms, or dynamic content do not work: interactive code may depend on the original server or services that are no longer available in the archived rendering. Use the displayed captured content for what it actually shows, not as proof that the original interaction remains functional.
- The page appears to show live content: check the archived URL timestamp and the content itself. A missing archived resource can resolve to the live web, so verify that the item you are relying on belongs to the capture.

For recurring organizational archives
If your goal is to collect a changing set of pages on a recurring basis, rather than look up one page or save one URL, assess an institutional web-archiving service. The Internet Archive positions Archive-It as a paid subscription that includes technical and web-archivist support. Before choosing it, establish your collection scope, crawl schedule, administrative needs, and applicable service terms with the provider.
