The quickest way to convert a web page into a printable format is to open the page, press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS, choose a printer or Save to PDF, adjust the paper, layout, scale and margins, then inspect the preview before printing or saving. For a cleaner result, use Reader View in Firefox or Immersive Reader in Edge before opening the print dialog. Print a web page or save it as a PDF
These steps work in Edge, Firefox and most modern browsers. Names and positions of controls can vary by browser version, operating system and website.
- Open the page. Wait until the text, images and embedded content you need have loaded.
- Open print preview. Choose the browser menu’s Print command, or press Ctrl+P on Windows/Linux or Command+P on macOS.
- Choose a destination. Select a physical printer, or select a PDF destination. Firefox labels its PDF option Save to PDF; other browsers may offer a similarly named system or browser PDF printer.
- Set the page controls. Choose paper size, orientation, page range, scale, margins, color and whether to include backgrounds, headers and footers.
- Inspect the preview. Look for clipped columns, blank pages, missing images, unexpected page breaks and navigation or advertising that should not be included.
- Finish. Select Print for paper or Save for a PDF, then choose a filename and folder when prompted.
Paper size and orientation
Choose the size loaded in your printer. Edge exposes Letter, A4, Legal, Executive, A3, B4, B5 and envelope sizes. Firefox exposes paper size and orientation controls. If a wide table or dashboard is cut off in portrait mode, switch to landscape before reducing the scale.
Scale, margins and page range
Use scale to fit content within the printable area; lowering it slightly is usually better than allowing a right-hand column to be clipped. Custom margins create more usable space, while larger margins improve readability. Print only the page range you need when a long article contains unrelated sections.

Color, backgrounds and headers
Enable Background graphics when color blocks, diagrams or shaded table cells carry meaning. Backgrounds consume ink and can reduce contrast, so turn them off for ink-saving text copies. Browser-generated headers and footers commonly add the page title, URL and date; disable them when you need a clean document.
Make the page clean before printing
Edge Immersive Reader
On supported pages, select the Immersive Reader icon in Edge’s address bar, or press F9 where that shortcut is available, then print from the simplified view. It removes surrounding material such as ads and site navigation. The option is not available on every site, and interactive pages may lose controls or embedded content.
Firefox Reader View
In Firefox, activate Reader View from the address bar when the page offers it, then print the simplified page. Reader View is useful for articles because it removes much of the navigation and advertising while retaining the main text and images.
Firefox Simplified format
Firefox may offer a Simplified format under More settings in print preview. It cannot be combined with printed backgrounds. Choose the normal format if background diagrams or color coding are essential.

Print only a passage in Edge
Select the text or images you need, right-click the selection and choose the print command. The selection workflow is useful for a quotation, recipe or single table, but it may omit context and page-level styling.
Use an editing extension
When Reader View is unavailable, Firefox’s print guidance names Print Edit WE as an option for editing page content before printing. An editing extension can remove individual elements, but review its permissions and test the preview because deleting a container can also remove required text or images.
Why a printed page does not match the screen
Printing is a separate rendering mode, not a photograph of the browser window. Websites can define CSS rules inside the @media print query that apply only to paper and PDF output. Those rules may hide navigation, change colors, alter font sizes, reflow columns or insert page breaks. The @page rule can set page dimensions and margins, and browser print settings can independently add or remove headers and footers.
To diagnose a difference, open developer tools and emulate the print media type. Inspect which elements are hidden, which widths exceed the paper and whether a fixed-position element is covering content. A page that looks correct on screen can still paginate differently because the printable area is narrower and has a different height.

Common layout causes
- Wide tables or code blocks: they exceed portrait width and are clipped or scaled down.
- Fixed navigation, cookie banners or chat widgets: they remain visible unless the site’s print CSS hides them or you remove them in a simplified view.
- Lazy-loaded images: they may not load before preview generation.
- Dark themes and background colors: they may be suppressed unless backgrounds are enabled.
- Links and interactive controls: buttons can print without their underlying destinations or may be hidden entirely.
Troubleshoot print and PDF problems
Text or columns are cut off
- Change orientation to landscape.
- Choose the paper size that matches the printer or intended PDF.
- Reduce scale or select a fit-to-page option.
- Use Reader View or Immersive Reader to remove sidebars.
- For a responsive table, print a smaller page range or copy the table into a document designed for the target paper.
Blank pages appear
Check the preview for an oversized element, forced page break or an empty print section. Lower the scale, switch paper size and try the page range again. If the page is an application rather than an article, its print stylesheet may intentionally reserve space for screens or reports.
Images, colors or banners disappear
Turn on Background graphics when the missing material is a background. Confirm that images finished loading before opening preview. If an image is still absent, reload the page, disable content-blocking rules for that site temporarily and preview again.
The page is cluttered
Use Reader View, Immersive Reader or an editing extension. If none is offered, select and print only the required passage. Do not assume that hiding a visual element also removes its text; always inspect the resulting PDF.
The PDF has the wrong headers or footers
Disable browser-generated headers and footers in the print dialog. These are separate from headers and footers authored by the website’s print CSS, so you may need both the dialog setting and Reader View to remove all surrounding material.

Interactive content does not print
Accordions, tabs, canvases and authenticated dashboards can contain state that a static print job cannot reproduce. Expand the required sections first, wait for data to load and verify the preview. For a web application that must produce PDFs in code, WebView2 exposes ShowPrintUI, Print, PrintToPdf and PrintToPdfStream.
Automate printable output for an application
For a one-off document, the browser workflow is simplest. Automation is useful when a build, reporting job or internal tool must capture many URLs with consistent options. Your automation needs to wait for the page to load, authenticate when required, choose a viewport and paper model, and handle failures such as timeouts, bot checks and blank responses.
Browser automation considerations
- Wait for a meaningful selector or network idle rather than an arbitrary short delay when data arrives asynchronously.
- Set viewport, device scale, timezone and locale deliberately so output is reproducible.
- Use print-specific CSS or a PDF print API instead of capturing a screen-sized image when the deliverable is a multipage document.
- Record the URL, options, timestamp and failure reason with every job so a bad PDF can be reproduced.
- Test authenticated, consent-gated and responsive pages separately; they often render differently from public desktop pages.
