This keeps the document on your computer instead of uploading it to an online converter. Use a web service only when you need batch conversion or controls that Firefox does not provide.
Convert an HTML document to PDF in Firefox
Firefox can print both a local .html file and a page on the web. The procedure is free and does not require an account, add-on, or upload.
- Open the document. In Firefox, press
Ctrl+O(Windows/Linux) orCommand+O(macOS), select the HTML file, and open it. You can also navigate to the web page you want to save. - Open print preview. Select the application menu (the three horizontal lines) and choose Print…. Firefox opens its print-preview screen.
- Choose the PDF destination. In Destination, select Save to PDF. Mozilla’s Firefox instructions use this exact option to save the displayed preview as a PDF.
- Check the preview. Scroll through every page. Look for clipped columns, missing images, unexpected blank pages, and headings stranded at the bottom of a page.
- Set the output options. Choose the paper size, orientation, scale, margins, color mode, page range, and whether to print headers, footers, and backgrounds.
- Save the file. Click Print, choose a filename and folder, and confirm. Firefox writes the PDF locally.
The labels can vary slightly by operating system, but Save to PDF is the relevant destination rather than a physical printer. If you do not see it, expand the destination drop-down or select the system print dialog and choose the operating system’s PDF printer.
Choose the right Firefox print format
Original
Original preserves the page’s normal design. Use it for invoices, forms, tables, diagrams, branded reports, and any document where colors or background graphics carry meaning. A web layout is not a fixed sheet of paper, so Firefox may reflow columns or move elements across page boundaries even in this mode.

Simplified
Where Firefox offers Simplified, it creates a clutter-reduced version suited to article-like pages. Mozilla describes this mode as removing items such as navigation, advertisements, buttons, and some background imagery. It can make a long article easier to read, but it may also remove a table, sidebar, interactive control, or visual element you need. Compare the preview with the original before saving.

These controls affect the printed representation, not the HTML itself. If the page uses responsive CSS, changing paper size or orientation can trigger a different layout. Always inspect the complete preview rather than judging from the first page.
Fix common layout problems before saving
Cookie banners, popups, and navigation
Try Simplified first on article pages. If the unwanted element remains, close it in the page and print again. Mozilla also points to the Firefox Add-on Print Edit WE for pages that need elements edited or removed before printing. Treat extensions as optional: review their current permissions and maintenance status before installing.
Wide tables and clipped content
- Switch to Landscape.
- Choose the paper size used by the recipient.
- Reduce the scale gradually and recheck legibility.
- Use a page range if only a narrow section is required.
If a table still breaks badly, the page’s CSS may not define print styles. A standalone converter or a manually prepared print stylesheet may provide more control than Firefox’s preview.

Missing images or blank areas
Wait for the page to finish loading before opening print preview. Confirm that images are visible on screen, then try Original with backgrounds enabled. Images loaded only after scrolling, content behind a script-driven overlay, and cross-origin resources can all produce a different print result from the screen.
Page breaks in the wrong places
Preview the whole document and adjust scale, margins, and orientation. Firefox cannot guarantee that a web author’s screen layout will map neatly to paper; a heading, card, or table row can move to the next page. For a document you control, add print-specific CSS such as page-break rules and print the revised file.
When an online converter is worth considering
“Online” can mean two different workflows. Firefox’s built-in route runs locally: the HTML remains on your device and no third party receives it. An online converter requires uploading the file or making its URL available to an external service. That trade-off can be reasonable when you need capabilities beyond one local document.

Before uploading confidential HTML, read the service’s retention, deletion, and data-processing terms. Remove secrets embedded in the file, including API keys, session tokens, private URLs, and personal data. If the document contains sensitive information, the local Firefox method is the safer default.

Firefox’s official PDF Editor can open the file you just saved. Open the PDF in Firefox and use the Text or Draw buttons in the upper-right corner. The editor also supports images with alt text, signatures, highlights, and comments. Choose Download to save a copy containing your changes. This is annotation and light editing, not a way to reconstruct a complex HTML layout.
Troubleshooting checklist
- No Save to PDF option: expand Destination, choose the system print dialog, or select the operating system’s PDF printer.
- Output is empty: confirm the page is visible and fully loaded; disable a blocking extension; retry in Original.
- Text is too small: increase scale, change to landscape, or use a larger paper size before reducing margins further.
- Background colors disappear: enable background printing and verify the printer/PDF dialog has not overridden it.
- Only part of the page appears: check the page range and remove an accidental selection or print-area restriction.
- Local file behaves differently: open it directly in Firefox again and verify that linked CSS, fonts, and images use accessible relative paths. A missing local asset cannot be restored by the PDF dialog.
- Online capture fails: verify that the URL is publicly reachable, wait for dynamic content, and inspect the returned verdict and billing headers. Do not retry blindly when the page requires a login or blocks automation.
