The exact button or shortcut varies by extension. Before sending a screenshot, check what the service does with it, and follow your school’s rules for graded work and assessments.
What an AI screenshot solver extension does
A screenshot solver takes a picture of content visible in your browser and sends it to an AI service to interpret. Depending on the product, it may return a worked explanation, a quick answer, or both. This can spare you from retyping a question, but it does not mean every extension can capture every browser surface or correctly read every symbol, diagram, or handwritten mark.
The workflow is generally: install an extension, open a question on a webpage or PDF, invoke its capture control, select the relevant portion of the screen, and inspect the result. For example, SightSolve documents a keyboard shortcut and a toolbar route; Homework Helper describes a pinned-extension and sidebar workflow. Those are product-specific instructions, not universal Chrome controls. See the [SightSolve listing](https://chromewebstore.google.com/webstore/detail/sightsolve-screenshot-ai/acopdedgmhhddcmoahmoamcclpbllkpb) and [Homework Helper listing](https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/homework-helper/hplegoepdopbpclmjaigfcimlcigfadh).
Install and check an extension before using it
- Find the official listing. Use the developer’s official link or search the Chrome Web Store, then check that the publisher and listing match the product you intend to install.
- Review permissions and privacy disclosures. Consider whether the extension’s access to pages or screenshots is appropriate for what you will use it on. Read its privacy policy and retention terms before sending sensitive material.
- Install through the browser store. Google’s instructions for installing and managing Chrome extensions are at Chrome Web Store Help. Browser labels and controls may change, so use the current store guidance if your menus differ.
- Pin the extension if useful. In Chrome, the extensions menu can provide access to installed extensions; some products recommend pinning their icon for quicker access. Homework Helper’s listing describes pinning as part of its workflow.
Do not assume installation authorizes use on a particular school page, exam, or restricted assessment. Whether a tool is permitted depends on the school’s policy and the rules for that work.

Capture a question and get an explanation
- Open the question. Navigate to the webpage or PDF and make sure the full prompt, relevant labels, and any necessary diagram are visible. If the question spans multiple areas, arrange the page so the solver can see all information it needs.
- Start the extension’s capture mode. Follow its listing or in-product instructions. SightSolve documents either Ctrl+Shift+S or clicking its toolbar icon and choosing Capture. Other products may open a sidebar or start from the extension icon; Screenshot Solver and Homework Helper describe their own icon-based workflows.
- Select only the relevant area. When a selection box appears, drag around the question and the details needed to solve it. Avoid including unrelated tabs, account details, names, or other private information. If the selection misses part of a formula or diagram, cancel and capture again.
- Wait for processing, then read the response. Some extensions require an internet connection because the image is processed by their AI servers. Screenshot Solver’s listing says an internet connection is required. Do not interpret a delay as a failed capture until the extension indicates an error or stops processing.
- Check the solver’s interpretation before using the result. Compare any transcription or restatement with the original question. Verify signs, exponents, units, variable names, graph axes, and diagram labels. MathPal says its response restates the problem before giving steps; that is a MathPal feature, not a standard capability shared by all extensions.
- Review the reasoning. Work through the explanation and check whether each step follows from the prompt. If the extension only gives a final answer, ask it for a derivation if that option exists, or solve the problem independently before relying on the result.
Can an extension read a question in a PDF?
It may, if the PDF is displayed in a browser view the extension can capture and the relevant content is legible in the selected area. MathPal describes selecting a problem on a webpage, PDF, or scanned worksheet. That is a provider’s stated workflow, not a guarantee that every extension can access every PDF viewer or protected document.
For a scanned page, image quality and handwriting matter: zoom in enough to capture clear text, include the full problem, and inspect the solver’s reading closely. A capture tool cannot recover details that are cropped out or too blurry to distinguish. If the extension cannot select the PDF content, check whether it supports that viewer and whether the document’s restrictions or browser surface prevent capture; do not try to bypass access controls.

Examples of different extension workflows
These examples illustrate why you should check each product’s own directions rather than assume a shared interface. Listing descriptions and claims can change; the versions and update dates below are those stated on the listings reviewed in September 2026.
| Extension | Capture or workflow described | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| SightSolve | Ctrl+Shift+S or toolbar icon > Capture, then drag around the question. Its listing describes worked steps. | The listing says Version 2.1, updated September 12, 2026. Its stated 95.8% result on 24 official SAT math questions is a developer-reported test, not an independent benchmark. The listing warns that AI can be wrong and asks users to check school policy for graded work. |
| Screenshot Solver | Click the extension icon, capture a problem, and review an explanation. | The listing says Version 1.1.0, updated January 30, 2026, and says internet access is needed to process problems through its AI servers. Speed and accuracy language on the listing is promotional, not an independently established result. |
| Homework Helper | Pin the extension, open an exercise, take a screenshot, and choose a step-by-step explanation or quick solution. | The listing says Version 1.2.2, updated August 28, 2026. Its statements about diagrams, formulas, graphs, and handwriting are the listing’s claims. |
| MathPal | Select a problem on a webpage, PDF, or scanned worksheet; the service says it returns worked steps. | MathPal says the selected area is sent to its server for AI processing and, when signed in, stored with the solve in account history. Its site distinguishes an initial free solve from regular use requiring a plan. |
| Solvely | Its site describes screenshot help on Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, Google Classroom, and other websites. | Its “98% Accurate” and “100M Problems Solved” statements are vendor claims on an undated page accessed September 29, 2026, not independently substantiated comparative evidence. |
When choosing between extensions, compare the capture controls, the kinds of pages and subjects they say they support, whether they provide steps, account requirements, and what happens to screenshots after processing. Check current terms and disclosures directly: availability, prices, free limits, privacy practices, and product capabilities can change.

Protect your privacy and use the tool appropriately
A screenshot can include more than the exercise: names, account details, grades, course materials, or unrelated browser content. Select the smallest area that contains everything needed to interpret the question. Then check the provider’s privacy and retention statements rather than assuming all extensions handle screenshots alike.
- MathPal says selected screenshots are sent to its server for AI processing and, if you are signed in, stored with the solve in history.
- SightSolve’s store listing says screenshots are discarded after processing and are not stored or sold.
Those are the providers’ respective disclosures; they do not establish how other extensions handle data. Avoid submitting sensitive information unless you understand and accept the relevant provider’s terms.

Use a solver for practice or study only where it is allowed. SightSolve’s listing says to check your school’s AI policy before using the extension on graded work; MathPal similarly tells users not to use it where their school disallows it. A tool’s ability to capture an exam page does not mean it is authorized for that exam.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers, not an AI homework solver. It captures a webpage as an image or PDF; it does not interpret the question or generate a solution. If your goal is to automate clean webpage captures rather than solve the visible problem, you can call its API directly. The endpoint and options are documented at ScreenshotNeo’s API documentation.

For example, this cURL request captures a webpage as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Or in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo removes known cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. These are API captures, so you still need a separate solver if you want an explanation of a question.
Sign up for ScreenshotNeo free to get 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
Troubleshooting capture and answer problems
- The extension icon or shortcut does nothing: Open the extension from the browser’s extensions menu and check its current instructions. SightSolve lists Ctrl+Shift+S or its toolbar Capture command; other tools may use a different control. Confirm the extension is enabled and that the page or PDF viewer is supported.
- The selection misses part of the problem: Cancel and capture again with the complete prompt, diagram, and labels visible. Reduce clutter and ensure the selection is legible rather than including unrelated screen content.
- The answer misreads a symbol or image: Compare the tool’s restatement with the original, especially signs, exponents, units, and graph labels. Correct the transcription if the product allows it, or provide a clearer capture. Do not continue from a reading you know is wrong.
- Processing fails or never completes: Check your internet connection, since some services process screenshots on their servers. Retry once with a smaller, clearer selection; then consult that extension’s support or listing for service-specific limitations.
- The answer is plausible but the work is unclear: Ask for the steps if available, then verify each transformation independently. An AI-generated answer is not proof of correctness; SightSolve’s own listing explicitly cautions that AI can be wrong.
- You are unsure whether a school page is allowed: Do not use the extension on graded work or an assessment until you have checked the applicable school and assessment rules.
FAQ
Do I need to retype the question?
Usually the point of this workflow is to select a screenshot instead of typing the prompt, but the solver still needs a clear image containing all relevant information.
Does every screenshot solver work on every website?
No. Support depends on the extension and the browser surface, and some protected or restricted pages may not be capturable. Check the product’s own support information.
Can I trust the final answer without checking it?
No. Verify that the question was read correctly and review the reasoning before relying on the result.
