It records HTTP and HTTPS traffic that has been routed through it, so you can inspect requests and responses from a browser, desktop program, or mobile app. It is not a browser, and it cannot capture traffic from a device or app that is not configured to use it.
A basic workflow is to start Charles, configure the browser or device to send traffic through it, generate the traffic you want to diagnose, and inspect the captured requests. To inspect HTTPS contents, you must also enable SSL Proxying for the relevant host and deliberately trust Charles’s certificate authority (CA) certificate.
What Charles Proxy does—and what it does not do
Charles sits between a configured client and the server it contacts. It records the exchanges routed through the proxy in a session, where you can examine request and response details such as headers, bodies, cookies, and returned data. That makes it useful for debugging web pages, API calls, desktop applications, and mobile apps.
Opening Charles alone does not make it a system-wide monitor. The browser, app, emulator, or phone must actually send its traffic through Charles, and recording must be enabled for events to be added to the session. Charles documents its desktop platforms and features in its Using Charles overview.

Charles is therefore different from a packet viewer that passively observes whatever happens on a network: it acts as a proxy for clients configured to use it. Nor is it a screenshot tool. It shows network exchanges, not a rendered image of a page.
How to use Charles Proxy for a basic desktop capture
For a first capture, use a browser on the computer running Charles. Charles’s welcome workflow can configure supported browser or system proxy settings; otherwise, configure the browser or operating system to use Charles as its proxy. The exact menu labels vary by operating system and browser, so check the official Browser & System Configuration guide for your setup.
- Install and start Charles. Download the desktop application from the official download page for Windows, macOS, or Linux.
- Allow or configure proxy settings. Accept Charles’s configuration prompt where supported, or set the browser/system HTTP proxy to the Charles host and port shown in its configuration. Do not assume another device or every app inherits that setting.
- Make the request you want to inspect. Browse to a page or use the app whose behavior you are diagnosing. Confirm that Charles is recording; when recording is off, requests can still pass through, but they are not added to the session.
- Find the event in the session. Use Structure view to browse traffic grouped by host and path, or Sequence view to follow events in chronological order.
- Select a request or response. Inspect its headers and body. Charles provides viewers for common data formats such as JSON and XML, making it easier to see what was sent and what the server returned.
- Save or clear the session as needed. Sessions can be saved and reopened. Clear a crowded session when you no longer need its recorded events; long captures can consume memory.

How to inspect HTTPS requests in Charles
HTTPS content is encrypted between a client and server. To inspect its contents, Charles can act as a man-in-the-middle proxy: it presents the browser with a site certificate generated for the requested host and signed by the Charles root CA, while maintaining SSL connections on both the browser-to-Charles and Charles-to-server legs. Because Charles can decrypt eligible traffic while this is enabled, certificate trust is a security decision, not a cosmetic setup step.
- Install and trust the Charles CA certificate on the test device or browser using the procedure for that platform. Charles documents certificate setup in SSL Certificates.
- Enable SSL Proxying for the host you need. Use Charles’s SSL Proxying settings to opt in to the target host. Charles also documents a wildcard option, but a host-specific rule limits interception to the traffic relevant to the test.
- Repeat the request and inspect its details. When the client trusts the CA and the host is covered by SSL Proxying, select the resulting event to examine the request and response.
Only install the CA and enable interception on devices, accounts, apps, and traffic that you own or are authorized to debug. Restrict the host list to what the investigation needs, then disable temporary proxy settings and remove or stop trusting the temporary certificate when finished. Route an iPhone or iPad through desktop Charles
For the desktop-proxy workflow, the iPhone or iPad and the computer running Charles need to be on the same Wi-Fi network. On the device, configure the Wi-Fi network’s HTTP proxy to use the computer’s local IP address and Charles’s port, usually 8888. When Charles prompts to allow the device connection, approve it. Charles’s configuration guide covers the proxy setup.

To inspect HTTPS, install the Charles certificate using the vendor’s mobile instructions. On iOS 10.3 and later, installing the profile alone is not enough: enable full trust for the certificate in Certificate Trust Settings. The official SSL Certificates guide describes the trust step. When testing is over, turn off the Wi-Fi proxy so the phone does not try to reach Charles when the computer is unavailable.
There is also a separate Charles for iOS app workflow: open the app, turn on Use Proxy, accept its VPN profile prompt, then install and trust its CA certificate to inspect HTTPS. That is not the same as routing the phone through desktop Charles; follow Charles for iOS Getting Started for the app-specific steps.

Route an Android device or emulator through Charles
For a physical Android phone, connect it to the same Wi-Fi network as the computer running Charles, then configure its proxy to the computer’s local IP and Charles port. An emulator can use a local proxy as well; emulator and device details can affect the address to enter. Google’s Android Charles setup explains the supported setup paths.
Installing a user CA on Android does not automatically make every app trust it. For HTTPS inspection in an Android app, the app needs to opt in to trusting user-provided CAs. A debug network security configuration can permit user certificates in debuggable builds while leaving production trust behavior unchanged. Use the Google guidance above and the app’s own debug configuration rather than changing trust behavior in a release build.

- No events appear: Check that the specific browser, app, emulator, or phone is configured to use Charles, that the device can reach the computer, and that recording is on. Charles only records traffic routed through it. For phones using the desktop route, confirm the same-Wi-Fi requirement.
- HTTPS requests appear but their contents are unavailable: Confirm that the Charles CA is installed and trusted on the client and that SSL Proxying is enabled for the host. Both conditions matter for HTTPS inspection.
- One app still rejects the certificate: Certificate pinning can cause an app to reject Charles’s generated certificate even when the CA is installed. For an app you control, use an appropriate debug configuration. Do not treat bypassing certificate protections in a third-party app as routine setup.
- The phone loses connectivity after testing: Turn off the manually configured Wi-Fi proxy when Charles is stopped or the computer is no longer reachable. A stale proxy setting can send requests to an unavailable computer.
- A long session is using too much memory: Save anything needed for later, then clear the current session. Charles’s FAQs cover memory and proxy troubleshooting.
Do not assume every app or protocol can be inspected simply because Charles is running. Whether a particular flow is visible depends on its routing, certificate trust, and app behavior.

Charles Proxy version, trial, and license prices
The official download page reviewed on September 29, 2026 lists desktop release 5.2.1 for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Charles’s purchase page says Charles 5 was released on March 12, 2025, and offers a 30-day evaluation. Frequently asked questions
Is Charles Proxy a VPN?
No. Charles is an HTTP/HTTPS debugging proxy that captures traffic from clients configured to use it. A VPN and a debugging proxy serve different purposes; Charles’s capture behavior depends on proxy routing, not simply joining a VPN.
Can Charles show the passwords I submit?
If a client sends a password in traffic that Charles can inspect, the value may be visible in the request body or headers. That is why interception should be limited to authorized test traffic and why sensitive accounts should be handled carefully.
Can I use Charles without installing its certificate?
You can capture traffic that Charles can proxy without enabling HTTPS decryption, but encrypted HTTPS request and response contents require the applicable certificate trust and SSL Proxying setup.
