The reliable fix is to make the rendering environment comparable before changing your CSS. Puppeteer can produce different screenshots on Linux and Windows because the browser build, fonts, operating-system libraries, headless mode, viewport, device scale, locale, or graphics configuration differ. Record those inputs, hold the page constant, compare layout geometry before pixels, and then correct the specific environment or application cause.
Why the same Puppeteer page can look different
Puppeteer controls Chromium, but it does not promise pixel-identical output across operating systems. “Linux” and “Windows” are not single rendering targets: distributions, installed libraries, font files, Chrome builds, GPU paths and launch flags all vary.
Browser and Puppeteer drift
A Windows machine may use a locally installed Chrome while Linux uses the Chrome for Testing binary downloaded by Puppeteer, or a system Chromium package. Even minor browser-build changes can alter layout, font metrics, CSS behavior or rasterization. Puppeteer’s installation documentation explains that it downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing build and that you can explicitly select another executable. Log the actual executable and browser version on both machines rather than inferring them from the Puppeteer package version.
Fonts and fallback
Font availability is one of the most plausible causes of visibly different text. A declared family may resolve to a different installed file—or to a fallback family—on Linux. Different font files and versions change glyph widths, line breaks, baseline placement and anti-aliasing. Historical Puppeteer reports discuss Windows, Linux and serverless font-stack differences, but those reports are examples, not proof that every mismatch is a font problem. Verify what actually loaded.

Headless, headful and graphics paths
Puppeteer is headless by default, but it can launch full (headful) Chrome or the headless shell. Headless and headful rendering have historically shown text differences. GPU and compositing settings can also affect rasterization. A comparison is meaningful only when both systems use the same mode and equivalent launch arguments.
Runtime libraries and other inputs
Linux Chrome depends on shared libraries supplied by the operating system. Missing or substituted libraries can prevent launch or alter rendering. Viewport dimensions, device scale factor, locale, time zone, network assets, animation state and capture timing are additional variables. A page that has not finished loading web fonts can produce a different image on every run, regardless of operating system.
Build a reproducible baseline
Start by writing a small diagnostic script that records the browser and page inputs. Run the same script on Windows and Linux and keep the output with each screenshot artifact.
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
headless: true,
// executablePath: '/absolute/path/to/chrome', // set explicitly when needed
args: []
});
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
await page.evaluate(async () => {
if (document.fonts) await document.fonts.ready;
});
const info = await browser.version();
const geometry = await page.evaluate(() => ({
userAgent: navigator.userAgent,
dpr: window.devicePixelRatio,
viewport: { width: innerWidth, height: innerHeight },
body: document.body.getBoundingClientRect().toJSON(),
fonts: document.fonts ? document.fonts.status : 'unavailable'
}));
console.log(JSON.stringify({ puppeteer: require('puppeteer/package.json').version, browser: info, ...geometry }, null, 2));
await page.screenshot({ path: 'baseline.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
})();
Also record the operating-system release, CPU architecture, executable path, launch arguments, headless/headful mode, viewport, device scale factor, locale, time zone and the URL or fixture revision. Do not assume that “Chrome” on both machines means the same executable.

Wait for the condition your page needs, not merely an arbitrary delay. A useful sequence is navigation with networkidle0, then document.fonts.ready, followed by a selector wait for the component being captured. If lazy images are involved, scroll or otherwise trigger the same loading behavior on both systems.
Separate layout errors from pixel-rasterization errors
Compare geometry first
Capture bounding boxes and computed styles for the elements that differ. If a heading wraps on Linux but not Windows, compare its width, font size, line height, letter spacing, selected font family and parent constraints. Differences in geometry point to viewport, CSS, browser build, missing resources or font metrics.
const sample = await page.evaluate(() => {
const el = document.querySelector('h1');
const style = getComputedStyle(el);
return {
rect: el.getBoundingClientRect().toJSON(),
fontFamily: style.fontFamily,
fontSize: style.fontSize,
lineHeight: style.lineHeight,
fontWeight: style.fontWeight,
letterSpacing: style.letterSpacing
};
});
console.log(sample);
Then inspect rasterization
If boxes, line breaks and computed styles match but glyph edges or thin strokes differ, investigate font files, hinting, anti-aliasing and graphics libraries. Pixel-level equality may be impractical across operating systems even when the layout is correct. Define an image-diff tolerance for anti-aliased edges, or standardize on one container image for visual regression.

- List the intended families. Check the CSS stack and identify every script your page displays.
- Verify loading. In the page, inspect
document.fonts.statusand wait fordocument.fonts.ready. In DevTools or request logs, confirm that the expected font files return successfully. - Compare the actual files. Ensure Linux and Windows use the same family, weight, style and font-file versions. A nominally identical family name can map to different files.
- Install required Linux fonts. Add them to the versioned image or host, including fonts for non-Latin scripts. Package names are distribution-specific; follow the current Puppeteer troubleshooting guidance and your distribution’s Chrome dependencies rather than copying a Debian list into CentOS or another base.
- Prefer self-hosting for tests. Serving pinned font files from your fixture removes dependence on whatever a developer workstation happens to have installed.
Do not treat an old issue-thread suggestion such as --font-render-hinting=none as a universal solution. It dates from an older software context; test any flag against the current Chrome build and the exact symptom.
Check Linux shared libraries and sandbox setup

ldd /path/to/chrome | grep not
The official Puppeteer troubleshooting guide lists common Debian-family and CentOS packages and explains sandbox configuration. The exact package set depends on your distribution, Chrome build and container. Install only the dependencies required by the target image, then rerun the diagnostic script. In cloud environments, a stock Node.js runtime may omit libraries needed by Headless Chrome; the guide recommends building a custom Dockerfile with the required dependencies.
Match launch mode and graphics configuration
Run both systems with the same headless setting and the same arguments. Record whether you use full Chrome, the headless shell, a GPU-enabled path or software compositing. Do not add legacy flags simply because an old issue mentions them: flags can change security, performance and output, and their effect depends on the current browser build.

Make CI and production captures repeatable
- Build from a version-controlled Dockerfile and update it intentionally.
- Pin package versions or lockfiles for Puppeteer and your application.
- Expose browser version, executable path and launch options in job logs.
- Use a deterministic fixture and stable network responses.
- Wait for fonts, images and the exact application-ready selector.
- Keep a known-good screenshot artifact for comparison after upgrades.
- Run a small matrix when needed: browser version, headless mode and target OS.
When a mismatch appears, first reproduce it in the pinned image. If it disappears, the workstation or runtime drift—not the page—was the cause.

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API when you need a consistent capture service instead of maintaining local Chrome installations. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server gives Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools.

Chrome will not start on Linux
Likely cause: unresolved shared libraries, sandbox restrictions or an incompatible executable. Fix: run ldd chrome | grep not, install dependencies for the actual distribution, verify the executable path and review sandbox configuration. Rebuild the image rather than relying on an ad-hoc workstation install.
Text wraps differently
Likely cause: different font fallback, font weight, viewport or browser build. Fix: compare computed styles and bounding boxes, confirm the requested font file loaded, wait for document.fonts.ready, and set identical viewport and device scale values.
Only glyph edges differ
Likely cause: rasterization, hinting, anti-aliasing or graphics libraries. Fix: standardize the OS/container and browser, or use a diff tolerance for edge pixels. Avoid assuming a CSS change is necessary when geometry matches.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsImages or charts are intermittently missing
Likely cause: capture timing, lazy loading or network variance. Fix: wait for network and the relevant selector, await fonts and images, and make test responses deterministic.

Headless differs from a desktop screenshot
Likely cause: different rendering mode or launch flags. Fix: compare headless with headless, or headful with headful, using equivalent arguments and recorded GPU/compositing settings.
A Cloud Run deployment breaks after moving from a laptop
Likely cause: the managed Node.js runtime lacks Headless Chrome packages. Fix: use a custom Dockerfile containing the dependencies required by the target Chrome build and keep that Dockerfile versioned.
When to change application CSS
Change the page only after the browser, fonts, libraries, mode and capture inputs are controlled. Reduce the mismatch to a small HTML/CSS reproduction, identify the property or browser behavior responsible, and then decide whether a portable CSS fallback is preferable to forcing pixel identity. If the difference is solely anti-aliasing, preserving semantic layout and accepting a measured visual tolerance is often safer than adding brittle styling hacks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Puppeteer guarantee identical screenshots on Windows and Linux?
No. It controls Chromium but does not guarantee pixel-identical output across operating systems; environment and rasterization differences can remain even when layout matches.
Should I install the same fonts on both systems?
Yes, for deterministic visual tests use the same font files, weights and versions, verify they load, and wait for document.fonts.ready before capture.
Is –no-sandbox a rendering fix?
No. Sandbox settings address launch and security constraints, not ordinary cross-platform pixel differences; use the target environment’s documented configuration.
What should I pin for visual regression tests?
Pin the Puppeteer/browser combination, Linux image and packages, font set, launch mode and arguments, viewport/device scale, locale and deterministic page inputs.
