Then check the link on the platform where people will share it: previews and caching can vary.
What is a website thumbnail?
In this context, a website thumbnail is the image attached to a link preview when someone shares a webpage. It is commonly called an Open Graph (OG) image, social image, or social cover image. Open Graph metadata describes a page as a rich object; og:image identifies an image associated with that page. See the Open Graph protocol.
Generating a thumbnail has two separate parts: making the image and telling platforms which image belongs to the page. A finished image without page metadata may not appear in a link preview; metadata pointing to a missing or inaccessible file will not provide a usable image either.
Choose how to make the image
Choose the method based on what the thumbnail should show. A designed image gives you deliberate brand and layout control. A generator can produce concepts from a brief or page context. A screenshot is useful when the rendered page itself, or a particular part of it, is the intended image.

Design or crop a branded card
Use an image editor or an OG-image tool when you want direct control over the title, branding, and composition. OpenGraph Studio describes an in-browser workflow for cropping, compressing, previewing, and copying OG and Twitter metadata. It recommends a 1200 × 630 pixel canvas for its workflow; that is a practical recommendation, not a dimension required by the Open Graph protocol. See OpenGraph Studio.
Generate a concept from a brief
OpenGraph.io describes a generator that accepts a website URL, text, reference images, and creative direction, and advertises three generated options and scenario-specific aspect ratios. Treat those as the vendor’s feature descriptions, not independently verified results. Capture the rendered page

Prepare the image and make it accessible
- Choose a useful composition. Put the page’s main subject or title where it remains easy to recognize at a reduced preview size. Avoid relying on small text or details near the edges.
- Pick a practical canvas. A 1200 × 630 pixel image is a common practical recommendation in the reviewed tool guidance, not an Open Graph protocol requirement. Check the target platform’s current guidance if exact dimensions or file limits matter.
- Export an appropriate file. Use a format and quality supported by your publishing system and target platform. Confirm that the exported image opens correctly and is not unexpectedly cropped or compressed.
- Publish it at a stable, publicly reachable URL. A preview crawler must be able to fetch the image. Avoid a URL that requires a logged-in session or expires before the link is shared.
Add Open Graph metadata to the page
Place page-specific Open Graph properties in the document’s <head>. At minimum, include the page title, type, canonical page URL, and image URL. The protocol defines these properties and their role; it does not prescribe one universal thumbnail size.

</head>Replace the example values with the actual title, page URL, and image URL. Use an absolute image URL so a crawler can identify the file independently of the page’s path. If your site has a CMS or SEO plugin, its social-sharing or Open Graph settings may generate these tags; avoid publishing conflicting duplicate values.
Generate a page screenshot with an API
For a rendered-page thumbnail, first decide whether the whole page or a particular viewport or element should appear. Check the preview after publishing
- Publish the page and its image, then confirm that the page source or rendered head contains the intended
og:imageURL. - Open the image URL directly to make sure it loads publicly and displays the expected asset.
- Use a preview tool or validator for the actual social or messaging platform where the link will be shared. OpenGraph.dev lists platform validators and discusses platform-specific scraping, fallback behavior, and caching; see its OpenGraph guidance.
- Check the preview’s crop and legibility, not just whether an image appears. If it is wrong, verify the page metadata and the image URL before changing either.
- If you replace an image or metadata, test again. A platform may still show a previously stored preview, so changing the source alone may not refresh its cache immediately.
There is no universal guarantee that every platform renders the same image or preview. Platform handling, fallback behavior, and caching differ. For a time-sensitive launch or exact compliance requirement, consult the destination platform’s current official documentation; the guidance at OpenGraph.dev is secondary and platform behavior can change.

Troubleshooting common thumbnail problems
The preview has no image
- Confirm that the page contains an
og:imagetag with the expected absolute URL. - Open that URL without being logged in. Check for a typo, access restriction, expired link, or missing file.
- Use the target platform’s preview checker to identify whether its crawler can retrieve the page and image.
The preview shows an old image
Check the platform’s stored preview as well as the current page metadata. Platforms may cache the image or page data, so a changed file or tag may not take effect immediately. Use the destination platform’s current refresh or validator process if available.

The image appears, but the crop or text is wrong
Inspect the actual output image at a small display size and compare it with the platform preview. Keep important content away from edges and check that the captured viewport, selected element, or design canvas matches the intended composition. The 1200 × 630 recommendation is a practical starting point, not a universal platform rule.
An API screenshot is blank or incomplete
Check whether the page needs more time, a selector wait, network idle, interaction, cookies, headers, or a different viewport. Lazy-loaded content may need full-page capture with lazy images loaded. If the target returns a bot check or fails to load, inspect the response outcome instead of treating a blank file as a valid thumbnail. A one-off branded image can be simplest to maintain in an editor. A reusable template or generator suits repeated designs, while an API suits URL-based capture and automation. For an API workflow, also plan for the image’s public URL lifecycle, API-key security, caching, and how failures will be detected and retried. A social preview depends on both your capture process and the platform that fetches and stores it.
