If a post-migration screenshot shows missing images, unstyled content, blank areas, or a different layout, first identify what changed: domain or paths, HTTP/HTTPS, redirects, CDN behavior, or the new origin. Then inspect the exact browser requests behind the pixels. A screenshot comparison is trustworthy only after both pages load the intended URL, assets, viewport, and rendering conditions.
Start by classifying the migration
The diagnostic path depends on whether visitors are reaching a new URL or the same URL from different infrastructure. Record the before and after URLs, protocol, host, path, viewport, and capture time before changing anything.

Google Search Central’s migration guidance says to include embedded content in a move plan: “Include images and videos—Make sure that you include URLs of embedded content in your site move plans: videos, images, JavaScript, and CSS files.” Treat those resources as part of the migration, not as an afterthought.
Inspect the failed request, not just the screenshot
- Open the affected post-migration page in the same browser and viewport used for the comparison.
- Open Developer Tools, select the Network panel, enable the option to preserve the log, and reload.
- Filter by Img, CSS, JS, Font, or search for a filename visible in the page source.
- Open suspicious requests and record the requested URL, status code, redirect chain, response URL, content type, and console message.
- Compare each value with the expected new URL. A screenshot symptom becomes actionable when you can name the exact request that failed, redirected, or returned the wrong content.
Chrome documents the Network panel as the place to inspect browser activity. Also check the Console: mixed-content, certificate, blocked-by-client, MIME-type, and JavaScript errors often explain why a resource visible in source never appears on screen.

Fix URL and path mapping problems
Build an old-to-new map
For a domain or path migration, list every old page and asset URL with its intended final destination. Include image variants, CSS, JavaScript, fonts, downloads, video posters and files referenced by CSS. Prefer a server-side permanent redirect directly to the final URL rather than a chain through several intermediate URLs. Test representative URLs and high-value assets before retiring the old host.
Recognize common mapping failures
- 404 or 410: the file was not copied, the path is case-sensitive, or the rewrite points to a nonexistent location.
- 301/302 to an HTML page: an asset request is being sent to a login page, home page, or generic error document. The browser cannot use HTML as an image, stylesheet, or script.
- Wrong host: source still points to the old domain or a staging hostname.
- Relative-path break: a changed directory depth makes
../images/logo.pngresolve somewhere else. - Filename or case change: a Linux origin treats
Logo.PNGandlogo.pngas different files.
When an asset is redirected, follow the chain to its final response. The final status, content type and body matter more than the first 301. Update templates, CMS fields, CSS URLs and JavaScript configuration rather than adding ever-longer redirect chains.
Resolve HTTP/HTTPS mixed content
If the document is HTTPS but an image, stylesheet, script, font or other resource remains HTTP, modern browsers may block it or warn about it. In Network and Console, look for requests whose URL begins with http:// while the page begins with https://. Inspect both generated HTML and CSS because a secure page can still contain an insecure url() reference.

- Replace hard-coded HTTP asset URLs with HTTPS URLs on a certificate-enabled host.
- Use root-relative paths such as
/assets/site.csswhen the asset is on the same origin. - Correct CMS database fields, theme settings and environment variables that generate old links.
- Use a carefully scoped CMS or server rewrite only when the destination is known to support HTTPS.
- Reload with the Network log preserved and verify that the request itself is HTTPS and returns the expected content type.
Do not treat a browser warning as proof that every asset failed: some “upgradable” requests may be rewritten automatically while scripts and styles can be blocked outright. The request log identifies which behavior occurred.

A correct migration redirect should end at the intended final URL in a small number of hops. A loop usually means two layers disagree: for example, an edge service terminates HTTPS, forwards HTTP to the origin, and the origin redirects that HTTP request back to HTTPS. Conflicting host, scheme, trailing-slash, or language rules can produce the same result.
- Request the exact failing URL with redirect inspection enabled in your HTTP client or browser.
- Write down every
Locationtarget and the scheme, host and path at each hop. - Check edge rules and origin rules together; changing only one layer can preserve the loop.
- Make the origin aware of the original HTTPS scheme through the platform’s trusted forwarded-protocol setting.
- Retest an old page, an asset, a canonical page and a URL with query parameters.
Redirects that land on nonexistent URLs create a different failure: the chain terminates, but the screenshot still lacks the resource. Fix the map rather than masking the 404 with a homepage rewrite.

Separate cache and CDN issues from origin failures
Compare the same asset through the public hostname and, where safe, directly against the new origin. A public response that is stale or transformed while the origin is correct points toward edge configuration; a failure at both locations points toward the origin, file, permissions or application.
Cloudflare-specific diagnostic sequence
For a site using Cloudflare, its missing-image guidance recommends purging the affected image URL, temporarily pausing the service, or disabling Rocket Loader, then retrying in a private tab. These are Cloudflare-specific diagnostic actions, not universal fixes. Change one variable at a time and restore the setting after the test.

- Check whether the response is a cached error, challenge page, or unexpected content type.
- Purge only the affected URL first; a broad purge can hide the timing problem.
- Use a private window to avoid a browser cache masking the result.
- Compare with another network if an enterprise proxy or local extension may be involved.
Verify the new origin and crawler access
Hosting migration validation has two audiences: ordinary browsers and search crawlers. In a browser, review pages, images, forms and downloads on the new host. Then use Google Search Console’s URL Inspection to check whether Googlebot can fetch the final URL and its resources.

For a URL-changing move, remove temporary noindex directives and robots.txt blocks when the site is ready. An asset can render for you while a crawler remains blocked, or a crawler can access a URL whose browser rendering is broken. Treat those as separate checks, not competing explanations.
Compare screenshots under controlled conditions
Capture the old and new pages only after the request-level checks pass. Use the same viewport dimensions, device pixel ratio, color scheme, authentication state, locale, timezone, geolocation, cookies and wait condition. Ensure lazy-loaded images have entered the viewport or that the capture waits for them. Record the final URL and timestamp with each image.

Operational checklist
- Save before/after URLs and the migration type.
- Test document, image, CSS, JavaScript, font and download requests.
- Record status, redirect chain, final URL, content type and console error.
- Check HTTPS consistency and certificate validity.
- Compare origin and edge responses.
- Retest privately after cache or CDN changes.
- Verify browser rendering and Googlebot access separately.
- Capture matched viewports and loading conditions only after requests succeed.
- Keep permanent redirects in place as long as possible; Google generally recommends at least one year. Google also notes that a small or medium move may take a few weeks for most pages to move, depending on server speed and URL volume.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I fix the screenshot tool or the migrated site first?
Fix the request that the browser or capture service reports. If the asset fails in a normal browser, repair the site or infrastructure before changing capture settings.
Can a 200 response still explain a missing image?
Yes. A 200 response containing an HTML login page, challenge, or error document is not a usable image. Check the final content type and response body.
Why compare crawler access separately from visual rendering?
Browsers and crawlers can receive different responses because of robots rules, noindex directives, user agents, authentication, or edge controls.
