Use a negative stop index in a slice:
s = "Python"
shorter = s[:-1]
print(shorter) # Pythos[:-1] starts at the beginning of s and stops immediately before the final indexed string element. It returns a new string containing every element except the last one. Because Python strings are immutable, the original value is unchanged unless you assign the result back with s = s[:-1].
The direct solution: s[:-1]
For a variable containing a Python string, the idiomatic way to remove exactly one final indexed element is:
text = "Screenshot"
text = text[:-1]
print(text) # ScreenshoA slice has the form sequence[start:stop]. Omitting start means “begin at the first element.” The stop value -1 refers to the position immediately before the final element when used as a slice boundary, so the last element is excluded. Python’s sequence rule is that a slice includes positions satisfying i <= k < j; the end bound is exclusive.
The expression itself does not alter the object stored in text. It creates a new string, and assignment makes the variable refer to that new value. This follows the Python tutorial’s rule that “Python strings cannot be changed—they are immutable.”

Keep the original and create a shortened value
filename = "report.csv"
without_last = filename[:-1]
print(filename) # report.csv
print(without_last) # report.csUse a second variable when later code still needs the complete string. Reassign only when discarding the old value is intentional.
What happens with empty and one-character strings?
The slice is safe for the two shortest ordinary inputs:

Python adjusts slice bounds gracefully. When the effective start is at or beyond the effective stop, the result is an empty string rather than an exception. This makes s[:-1] useful in loops and cleanup code where the input might already be empty.
Check before removing when an empty result is not acceptable
If your application requires at least one character to remain, test the length first:

print(remove_last_required("abc")) # abThe guard is an application rule, not a requirement of slicing itself. Without it, an empty or one-character input simply produces an empty string.

When s[:-1] is the right operation
Choose this slice when the requirement is literal: remove one final indexed string element, regardless of what that element is. It works for letters, digits, punctuation, spaces and other string elements:
examples = ["abc!", "1000", "name ", "é"]
for item in examples:
print(repr(item[:-1]))The final element is removed even when it is a space or punctuation mark. No character list or regular expression is needed.
Use a step only when you need a different pattern
A third slice field controls the step. For example, s[:-1:1] is equivalent to s[:-1], while a negative step reverses traversal and represents a different operation. Do not add a step merely to remove the last character; the two-field form is clearer.

How this differs from rstrip() and removesuffix()
Methods that sound similar solve different problems. Selecting the right operation prevents accidental data loss.

Why rstrip() is not an exact substitute
value = "data!!!"
print(value[:-1]) # data!!
print(value.rstrip("!")) # datarstrip("!") removes the whole trailing run of exclamation marks, not one exclamation mark. Likewise, rstrip() without an argument can remove several whitespace characters. Use it only when trimming a run is the intended behavior.

When removesuffix() expresses the requirement better
path = "archive.tar.gz"
print(path.removesuffix(".gz")) # archive.tarIf the suffix is known, naming it makes the code self-documenting and avoids deleting the wrong final character. A nonmatching suffix leaves the original value unchanged, whereas [:-1] always removes one final element when one exists.
Unicode: an indexed element is not always a visible character
Python indexes a string by its stored Unicode elements. A symbol that appears as one visible character to a user can consist of multiple code points, such as a base letter followed by a combining mark or an emoji sequence joined from several code points. In those cases, s[:-1] removes one final indexed code point, which might leave a partial-looking symbol.
If the requirement is “remove one user-perceived symbol” rather than “remove one indexed string element,” do not assume this slice is grapheme-cluster safe. The appropriate solution requires Unicode grapheme segmentation and a library or algorithm selected for that requirement. The ordinary slicing rule remains correct for code-point-oriented processing.
Practical patterns
Removing a delimiter added by a loop
When code has already built a string with a trailing delimiter, slicing can remove exactly that final delimiter:
joined = "red,green,blue,"
if joined:
joined = joined[:-1]
print(joined) # red,green,blueFor new code, " ,".join(...) (with the desired separator) often avoids creating the trailing delimiter in the first place. Use slicing when the delimiter is known to be exactly one indexed element and the existing construction is otherwise appropriate.

The original variable still has its final character
Slicing returns a value; it does not mutate the string. Store the result:
s = "Python"
s[:-1]
print(s) # Python
s = s[:-1]
print(s) # PythoThe code removes too many characters
Check for rstrip(), a loop, or a slice with a different stop or step. s[:-1] removes one final indexed element only. If you use s.rstrip(chars), every matching trailing character can be removed.
A suffix is removed even when it is not the one intended
Replace the slice with s.removesuffix("literal") when the operation depends on a specific suffix. This makes a nonmatch a no-op instead of deleting an arbitrary final element.

A visually complex symbol looks damaged
Inspect the string's Unicode composition. The slice operates on indexed code points, not necessarily on a complete grapheme cluster. If whole visible symbols must be preserved, use a grapheme-aware approach rather than treating [:-1] as a universal “backspace.”
The expression raises a type error
Confirm that the value is actually a string (or another sequence supporting slicing). A None value, number, or unrelated object cannot be shortened with string slicing. Validate or convert input at the boundary where it enters your program, and decide whether conversion is semantically safe.
