There is no universal winner. Choose a screenshot-first API when you need rendered images, and choose a browser-scraping platform when the job also requires HTML, structured fields, PDFs, or interactive browser state. For a screenshot API specifically, ScreenshotNeo is the first service to try: it removes common consent banners and widgets before capture, bills only clean results, and has a free 1,000-shot tier. Browserless is the better fit when screenshots sit beside browser automation or extraction; ScreenshotOne and Urlbox are screenshot-oriented alternatives; ScrapingBee is aimed at broader, credit-based scraping.
The plan figures below were available on September 29, 2026. Vendor pricing, quotas, taxes and eligibility can change, so confirm the live plan before purchase. No independent cross-provider benchmark establishes a fastest or most reliable provider on protected websites.
Screenshot API or scraping API?
A screenshot API returns a rendered visual artifact—normally PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It is useful for evidence, previews, visual regression, reports and archiving. A scraping API returns HTML or extracted values that software can process. A screenshot of a price is not the same as the price in a database.
Use a screenshot endpoint when
- You need a faithful visual of a page, viewport or CSS-selected element.
- Your output is an image or PDF consumed by people or another visual system.
- You can complete each capture independently without retaining browser cookies or page state.
Use extraction or browser automation when
- You need structured fields, rendered HTML, selector extraction or multi-step interaction.
- A workflow must log in, navigate, submit forms or preserve a session.
- You need one browser run to produce several related outputs.
Browserless documents its REST APIs as “stateless, single-action endpoints.” That simplicity suits isolated calls, but persistent state requires another interface or architecture. Its documentation separates screenshot, rendered-content, selector-scraping and smart-scrape endpoints rather than treating an image as extracted data.

| Rank | Service | Best-supported fit | Documented scope | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ScreenshotNeo | Clean, screenshot-only capture with predictable billing | PNG, JPEG, WebP and PDF; full-page and element capture; waits, scripts, cookies, headers, device and geographic controls; MCP tools | Use the free tier or paid screenshot plans when you do not need structured extraction |
| 2 | Browserless | Screenshots alongside browser automation or scraping | Screenshot, PDF, rendered HTML, selector scraping, smart scraping and custom functions; full-page capture and common image formats | REST calls are stateless single actions; advanced fingerprinting and interactive CAPTCHAs may still block requests |
| 3 | ScreenshotOne | Screenshot-first rendering and delivery workflows | Full-page shots, PDF, multiple output types, caching, webhooks, S3 upload and integrations | Cache behavior affects quota accounting; prices exclude VAT |
| 4 | Urlbox | Tiered screenshot volume with different render scopes | Lo-Fi, Hi-Fi and Ultra tiers with increasing render allowances | Lo-Fi eligibility is described for owned sites and thumbnail/low-quality third-party captures; wider capture depends on tier |
| 5 | ScrapingBee | Screenshot as one feature in a broader scraping service | JavaScript rendering, premium proxy geolocation, cookies, device settings and JavaScript scenarios | Billing is API credits, not a one-credit-per-screenshot promise |
ScreenshotNeo is listed first because its clean-shot pipeline removes common consent and nuisance overlays before capture, unsuccessful or cached outcomes are not billed as clean shots, and its lowest paid plan starts at $5.

Current public plan context
These are published figures observed September 29, 2026, not guarantees of future pricing. ScreenshotOne and Urlbox state that displayed prices exclude VAT. Browserless’ comparison page says its price snapshot was checked August 6, 2026; use official vendor pages for a purchase decision.
| Provider | Published allowance and price | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | Free: 1,000 shots/month, no card. Starter: $5 for 3,000. Growth: $15 for 15,000. Pro: $39 for 60,000. Scale: $99 for 250,000. Business: $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free. | Every feature is available on every plan; clean shots are the billable unit. |
| ScreenshotOne | Free allowance: 100/month. Basic: $17/month for 2,000 screenshots. Growth: $79/month for 10,000. Scale: $259/month for 50,000. | The quota FAQ describes exclusions for successful cached captures in specified cases, while cache misses can rerender and count. |
| Urlbox | Lo-Fi: $19/month up to 2,000 renders. Hi-Fi: $49/month up to 5,000. Ultra: $99/month up to 15,000. Business is shown at $498/month, consisting of a $495 base plus $3 per 1,000 renders. | Capture eligibility and quality differ by tier; displayed prices exclude VAT. |
| ScrapingBee | Hobby: 75,000 API credits for $19/month. Freelance: 250,000 credits for $49/month. | Credits consumed depend on rendering and proxy settings, so do not convert the quota directly into screenshot counts. |
How to evaluate an API before production
Run a controlled pilot against pages you are authorized to access. The goal is to measure whether the service produces the artifact your application needs, not to assume a feature label proves success on every target.
- Select representative pages. Include a normal server-rendered page, a JavaScript-heavy page, a long page with lazy-loaded images, and a page where you need one CSS-selected element.
- Fix the comparison settings. Use the same viewport, device scale, output format, timeout and geographic region for each provider.
- Verify rendering. Check fonts, images, charts, consent overlays, sticky headers, dark mode and content that appears only after scrolling.
- Test controls. Confirm waits, custom JavaScript, cookies, headers, user-agent, proxy or region settings and element clipping behave as required.
- Record operational data. Log completion, visual correctness, latency, response type, quota or credits consumed, cache behavior and any error text.
- Repeat difficult cases. A page can return a valid image of a bot challenge, blank shell or partial render. Treat that as a failed business result even when HTTP transport succeeded.
ScreenshotNeo: clean capture with one request
ScreenshotNeo accepts a GET request at https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot. It can load lazy images for full-page shots, capture a CSS-selected element, emulate dark mode, use 12 device presets or a custom viewport, apply retina scale, generate PDFs, run custom CSS and JavaScript, click before capture, hide selectors, wait for a selector, delay or network idle, block ads/trackers/requests/resource types, set headers/cookies/user-agent/Authorization, set timezone and geolocation, resize images, cache with a chosen TTL, create signed links, run asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, capture up to 100 URLs per bulk call and expose usage and OpenAPI endpoints. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

cURL
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameter details. This request saves a WebP image:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Responses identify page and billing status with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing as clean shots; inspect those headers and do not silently store an unusable image as success.
Cost, performance and reliability decisions
Model the unit you actually consume
Screenshot quotas are easiest to forecast when one completed capture equals one unit. Credit systems are less direct: JavaScript rendering, premium proxies, geography and other options can consume additional credits. Cache rules also matter. Ask whether a cache hit is free, whether a miss rerenders, and whether retries consume quota.

Separate concurrency from monthly volume
A monthly allowance does not tell you how many requests can run at once. For a batch, check documented concurrency, asynchronous jobs, webhook behavior and retry guidance. ScreenshotNeo supports asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks and bulk capture of 100 URLs per call; design your worker to record job IDs and verify each result.

Published support for JavaScript, proxies or fingerprint controls is not an independent success-rate measurement. Advanced fingerprinting and interactive CAPTCHAs can still block Browserless requests, and any provider can return a visually valid block page. Test your own authorized targets, including region-specific and logged-in pages.
Decide whether sessions are required
Stateless calls are ideal for public URLs. Login flows, carts, consent choices that must persist, or multi-page navigation need session-aware browser automation rather than unrelated one-shot requests.

Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Image shows a CAPTCHA or “verify you are human” page | Target protection rejected the request | Do not classify the capture as page success. Use an authorized access path, review provider-supported proxy/session options, and test whether browser automation is required. |
| Blank shell or missing cards | JavaScript had not finished, resources were blocked, or the page timed out | Wait for a selector or network idle, increase timeout within plan limits, allow required resource types and confirm the URL works in a normal browser. |
| Lazy images are absent | Images load only after scrolling | Enable full-page behavior that scrolls to trigger lazy loading, or add a wait/script before capture. |
| Consent banner, newsletter or chat covers content | Overlay loaded after initial HTML | Use a consent-aware clean-shot feature, hide the selector, click dismissal before capture or wait for the overlay to be removed. |
| Unexpected quota or credit usage | Cache miss, retry, proxy or rendering option counted separately | Inspect usage records, cache settings and the provider’s unit definition; calculate cost from the exact option set. |
| Wrong region, theme or viewport | Defaults differ from your target browser | Set viewport/device scale, timezone, geolocation, user-agent and dark-mode options explicitly. |
Or skip the browser setup
With ScreenshotNeo, the same capture is one API call:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are never billed as clean shots. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, inspect pages and capture PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Decision rules
- Choose ScreenshotNeo for clean image/PDF capture, broad rendering controls, MCP access and transparent clean-shot billing.
- Choose Browserless when screenshotting is one step in a larger browser automation or extraction workflow.
- Choose ScreenshotOne when screenshot delivery features such as caching, webhooks and S3 integration match your pipeline.
- Choose Urlbox only after confirming the tier’s render scope matches your ownership, quality and third-party capture requirements.
- Choose ScrapingBee when screenshots belong inside a credit-based scraping workflow that also needs JavaScript rendering, cookies or premium proxy geography.
Whichever shortlist entry you select, test the exact pages, regions, states and output formats your production system will use. A feature list cannot establish universal speed, reliability or anti-bot success.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot API replace structured web scraping?
No. It produces pixels or a PDF; use an extraction endpoint or browser workflow when your application needs fields, HTML or repeatable data values.

Are cached screenshots always free?
No universal rule applies. Providers define cache hits, misses and quota accounting differently, so read the current plan documentation and inspect usage during a pilot.
Do screenshot APIs bypass CAPTCHAs?
You should not assume that. Browserless explicitly warns that advanced fingerprinting and interactive CAPTCHAs may still block requests, and every provider should be tested on your authorized targets.
