The most reliable way to automate dashboard screenshots is to use the dashboard product’s own reporting feature when it supports your workflow. In Grafana, scheduled reports can email a dashboard with embedded images and optional PDF or CSV attachments. For one-off exports or products without suitable reporting, use browser automation such as Playwright, then add your own scheduler, authentication, retries, and delivery destination. For alert-driven evidence, Grafana alert screenshots are tied to panel events rather than recurring whole-dashboard reports.
Choose the automation path first
Decide what should trigger the capture and what the recipient needs. The same screenshot API can serve several workflows, but the surrounding setup is different.
| Need | Best starting point | Capture scope | Delivery responsibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daily, weekly, or monthly reporting | Native scheduled reporting | Usually a whole dashboard, with images and optional files | The dashboard platform can email or attach the report |
| One requested PNG or a custom image | Native image export, if available | Dashboard or selected view | Your script or operator saves and distributes it |
| Custom layout, login flow, or unsupported dashboard | Playwright or another browser automation tool | Page, viewport, element, or full scrollable page | Your scheduler, storage, and notification code |
| Evidence when an alert changes state | Alert screenshot integration | Associated panel | Configured notification or storage route |
Use a calendar trigger for recurring reports and an alert trigger for incidents. Do not treat an alert screenshot as a substitute for a scheduled, whole-dashboard report: it is event-triggered and panel-associated.
Option 1: Grafana scheduled reports
Grafana’s reporting workflow is the shortest route when your edition and deployment include it. Grafana describes reporting as sending automated and scheduled emails from dashboards. A report can embed dashboard images and can include PDF and CSV attachments.

Check prerequisites before configuring a report
- Confirm that your Grafana edition exposes reporting. Availability and configuration can differ between self-managed, Cloud, and Enterprise deployments.
- Configure SMTP so Grafana can send mail. Grafana documentation lists SMTP and an image renderer among Enterprise reporting requirements.
- Install and configure the Grafana Image Renderer when reports or exports need rendered dashboard images.
- Verify that the report recipients are allowed to view the dashboard data. A screenshot can expose the same information as the live dashboard.
- Check the current reporting interface status. Grafana’s redesigned reporting interface is marked public preview, with limited support and possible breaking changes.
Configure a recurring report
- Open the reporting area in Grafana and choose to create a report.
- Select the dashboard and the intended time range. Relative ranges such as “last 24 hours” move each time the report runs; an absolute range produces a fixed period.
- Choose the schedule and timezone. Make the timezone explicit so a “morning” report does not arrive at an unexpected UTC time.
- Add recipients and confirm that SMTP can reach their mail servers.
- Enable embedded dashboard images. Add PDF or CSV attachments when recipients need a printable document or the underlying tabular data.
- Send a test or run the report manually, then inspect image readability, panel loading, legends, and time-range labels before relying on the schedule.
Common reporting failure modes
- No email: check SMTP host, port, TLS mode, credentials, sender policy, and Grafana logs. A valid dashboard does not prove that mail delivery is configured.
- Blank or incomplete panels: verify the image renderer, data-source credentials, dashboard permissions, and the time range used by the report.
- Wrong local time: set the report timezone deliberately and check whether dashboard variables or viewers use a different timezone.
- Preview or menu missing: confirm the Grafana edition and current feature status; preview interfaces may change without preserving every label or workflow.
Option 2: Export a Grafana image on demand
For a manually requested PNG, configure Grafana’s Image Renderer and use the dashboard’s image export. The exported image reflects how the dashboard appears in a browser, so dimensions, panel layout, fonts, and responsive breakpoints matter.
Make the export predictable
- Choose a viewport wide enough for the dashboard’s desktop layout, or deliberately test the mobile layout if that is what recipients use.
- Use a time range that is visible in the image or filename. Include the range in metadata or a notification so a detached image is still understandable.
- Allow panels and fonts to finish loading before saving. A renderer that starts too early can produce missing legends or empty visualizations.
- Test the actual deployment, not just a local browser. Reverse proxies, authentication, network access, and rendering services can differ.
Option 3: Capture any dashboard with Playwright
Playwright gives you a browser-level capture API. It can save a viewport screenshot or capture the full scrollable page. It does not, by itself, schedule jobs, authenticate your recipients, retry failed runs, upload images, or send notifications; those are responsibilities of the surrounding automation.
Minimal Node.js capture
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1600, height: 1000 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
try {
await page.goto(process.env.DASHBOARD_URL, { waitUntil: 'networkidle', timeout: 90000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'dashboard.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Install Playwright with your project’s package manager and install the browser binaries before the first scheduled run. Store the URL and credentials in environment variables or a secret manager, not in source control.
Authenticate safely
Use the authentication method supported by the dashboard: a service account, a short-lived token, or a saved browser state created under a controlled account. Avoid embedding personal passwords in scripts. If the dashboard requires a VPN, private network, or allow-listed IP, run the worker where that access exists.

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
- The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.

- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
Wait for the dashboard’s real readiness condition
“Network idle” is useful but not universal. A dashboard may keep analytics or websocket connections open, or it may render charts after network activity stops. Prefer a stable selector that appears only when the main content is ready, and add a bounded delay only for components that need it.
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded', timeout: 90000 });
await page.locator('[data-testid="dashboard-ready"]').waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 60000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: output, fullPage: true });
If no readiness marker exists, wait for a known panel title or chart container and then capture. Keep the timeout finite so a broken data source cannot hold the job forever.
Capture a panel instead of the entire page
await page.locator('.panel-container').first().screenshot({ path: 'panel.png' });
A panel capture is often easier to read in incident notifications. Use a full-page shot for a report that must preserve dashboard context, filters, and multiple panels.
Add scheduling and delivery around the browser
- Run the script from cron, a CI scheduler, a container platform, or your job runner.
- Give each run a deterministic filename containing dashboard name, UTC timestamp, and time range.
- Retry transient navigation and rendering failures with a small bounded retry count. Do not blindly retry authentication failures.
- Upload the image to controlled storage or attach it to email or chat. Set an expiry for sensitive screenshots.
- Emit structured logs containing start time, URL identifier, result, duration, and destination. Never log tokens or cookies.
- Alert on repeated failures so a silent scheduler outage cannot be mistaken for a healthy dashboard.
Option 4: Grafana alert screenshots
Grafana can capture an associated panel when an alert fires or resolves and deliver or store that screenshot through supported routes. This is useful for incident context: the recipient sees the panel that explains the alert without opening Grafana immediately.

Configure the Image Renderer, associate the alert with the intended panel, and select a supported notification or storage route. Review access controls for externally hosted images. Because the trigger is an alert state change and the scope is a panel, use scheduled reports separately when you need a recurring whole-dashboard snapshot.
Reliability and image-quality checklist
- Time range: confirm that the captured range matches the report schedule and that the image visibly identifies the period.
- Data freshness: wait for the final query result, not merely page navigation.
- Legibility: validate viewport width, device scale, font loading, legend size, and labels at the destination’s display size.
- State: set filters, variables, theme, and collapsed panels explicitly where possible.
- Privacy: remove secrets from URLs, restrict storage, and apply retention rules.
- Recovery: keep the last successful image and mark it with its capture time; do not present stale output as current.
- Observability: measure success rate, duration, and failure reason in the scheduler, because the screenshot call alone cannot prove delivery.
Performance and cost considerations
Browser captures consume more CPU and memory than a direct image endpoint because they start a rendering engine and load page assets. Reuse a browser process for a batch where safe, limit concurrent pages, and block unnecessary third-party resources when they do not affect the dashboard. Full-page images use more memory than a single viewport or panel.
Native reporting can reduce the amount of infrastructure you operate, but it still depends on the edition, SMTP, renderer, permissions, and mail path. The supplied Grafana documentation does not establish comparative prices, rendering speeds, or reliability percentages, so choose based on workflow and operational ownership rather than an unverified benchmark.

The image is blank
Check authentication, dashboard permissions, data-source reachability, and whether the page requires a longer readiness wait. Capture the browser’s page content and console errors in a diagnostic run, then remove that verbose output from normal logs.

Charts are cut off
Use fullPage: true for a long page, or increase the viewport for responsive dashboards. For a specific panel, capture its locator rather than guessing coordinates.

The scheduled job works manually but not in production
Compare environment variables, timezone, network routes, browser dependencies, fonts, and secret permissions. A scheduler often runs with a different home directory and PATH than an interactive shell.
Images arrive late or not at all
Separate capture from delivery in logs. Confirm that the file was written before upload, that storage permissions allow the worker to write, and that notification payload limits do not reject large images. Retry delivery independently when the capture itself succeeded.
Repeated timeouts
Set a finite navigation timeout, wait on a specific readiness selector, and capture a diagnostic trace for one failing run. Do not increase timeouts indefinitely; a dead data source should produce a visible failure and an alert.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFAQ
Should I schedule a screenshot or a PDF?
Use a screenshot when visual appearance is the deliverable. Use PDF when recipients need a printable document or page-range control, and include CSV when they need tabular data for further analysis.
Can a screenshot prove that the dashboard data is correct?
No. It records the rendered state at a moment in time. Validate data-source health, query results, and the selected time range separately.
Is full-page capture always better?
No. Full-page capture preserves context but can create a very tall, hard-to-read image. A panel or viewport capture is often better for alerts and chat notifications.
