These are different outputs, not interchangeable ways to make the same report.
Choose the right kind of report artifact
Before automating anything, decide what the recipient needs to review. A CSV or table is suitable for analysis and custom report assembly; a dashboard export preserves a platform’s presentation; a browser screenshot captures what a page actually rendered at a particular moment.

A screenshot preserves visual context but is not a substitute for underlying data when the recipient needs to sort, filter, or recompute metrics. Conversely, an API response is not a screenshot: it provides data for a report you still need to format and deliver.
Use native scheduling for an existing dashboard
If the dashboard already presents the correct campaigns, date ranges, and visualizations, start with its built-in delivery feature. Looker documents recurring dashboard delivery and PDF output; its documentation describes the PDF as an image of the dashboard. Depending on configuration and permissions, destinations can include email, webhook, Amazon S3, and SFTP. Looker dashboard scheduling documentation describes the available behavior and configuration.

Set up and validate a scheduled delivery
- Confirm the dashboard displays the intended accounts, campaigns, date range, and filters.
- Check that your account can schedule the dashboard and use the desired destination. Permissions and available delivery choices can vary.
- Choose the schedule and output format the platform offers, then configure recipients or the storage destination.
- Send a test delivery and inspect the resulting artifact, including the date range, labels, filters, and readability.
- Establish who will notice a missed delivery and how stored reports are access-controlled.
Looker may deliver cached results when they are valid; otherwise, queries can run again. That can affect freshness and query behavior, so verify that the delivered report reflects the refresh expectations of your team. A scheduled PDF is a platform-rendered report, not necessarily a pixel-for-pixel capture of the dashboard in a particular browser.
Looker Studio’s data-source overview lists Google-built connectors for Google Sheets, Google Ads, Google Analytics, and other Google Marketing Platform products. Connector availability and access are subject to the product’s current configuration; consult the Looker Studio data-source documentation.
Use an analytics API when you need report data
For programmatic report assembly, the Google Analytics Data API’s runReport method returns report data in tabular form for a selected property, date range, dimensions, and metrics. It also supports filters and pagination. It does not return an image of the Analytics interface. See the Google Analytics Data API documentation.

Plan the query before writing the delivery workflow
- Choose the Analytics property and the exact reporting period.
- Select dimensions and metrics that match the report’s intended meaning; confirm that the requested combination is valid for the property.
- Apply filters deliberately, especially when producing different client or account reports.
- Handle pagination so that large reports are not silently truncated.
- Compare the returned data with the intended report in the platform, then build the formatting, schedule, storage, and recipient steps around it.
This route is useful when the report needs custom tables, calculations, or data from more than one source. It adds engineering work: API output alone does not format a client-ready artifact, run on a schedule, store the result, or notify anyone after a failure.
Capture the rendered dashboard with Playwright
When the deliverable must show the actual rendered page, browser automation can navigate to the dashboard and capture it. Playwright documents page.screenshot(), including full-page capture. That capability is only the capture step; a production workflow also needs to handle authentication, page readiness, scheduling, storage, and failures. Refer to the Playwright screenshot documentation.
Minimal runnable Node.js example
The following example opens a public page and saves a full-page PNG. It demonstrates capture, not login to a marketing platform or a recurring schedule. Install Playwright and its browser before running it:

}Replace the example URL with the permitted dashboard URL. A report page behind a login will require an approved authentication flow or an existing authenticated browser state; do not put passwords or session secrets directly in source code. Store credentials in an appropriate secret store and limit access to generated reports.
Make the capture reflect the intended report
- Wait for the report, not just navigation. A page can finish loading while charts or asynchronous data are still changing. Where possible, wait for a distinctive report element or a known ready state before capturing.
- Choose the capture scope. A viewport screenshot shows only the visible area; a full-page capture includes content beyond the viewport and may create a very tall image.
- Set a stable viewport. Use dimensions that keep labels and charts legible. Responsive dashboards may rearrange at different widths.
- Control the reporting context. Ensure the intended date range, account, client, and filters are selected before capture.
- Keep an audit trail. Name files with a clear client/report identifier and reporting period, and define who can access the stored output.
For recurring runs, schedule the script with the job scheduler or workflow system already approved for your environment. Add logging and failure notification; Playwright’s screenshot API does not provide a hosted reporting schedule or guarantee that the dashboard will be available and current.

Prevent the most common automation failures
Scheduled report arrives with the wrong data
Check the report’s date range, account selection, filters, and recipient-specific settings. In Looker, scheduled content can expose unfiltered data if filters no longer work; verify filters and access boundaries before enabling recurring delivery. See Looker’s scheduling guidance.
Dashboard screenshot is blank or incomplete
Navigation completion does not prove that charts finished rendering. Wait for a report-specific element or data-ready signal, confirm the selected date range, and inspect whether the page requires scrolling or a different viewport. If the page remains dependent on a delayed request, use an explicit wait with a bounded timeout rather than capturing immediately.
Browser capture fails on an authenticated dashboard
Confirm the automation has the correct authorized account and that its session has not expired. Avoid sharing browser-state files or credentials broadly. If the organization’s identity provider blocks unattended login, use an approved integration or the platform’s native scheduled delivery rather than trying to bypass access controls.

Check when the underlying data refreshes and whether the platform used valid cached results. A delivery schedule does not itself guarantee fresh source data. For API-built reports, verify the requested period and compare the result to the reporting interface.

Capture becomes unreadable or unwieldy
Use a viewport that fits the dashboard’s layout and inspect text at the actual output size. Full-page screenshots can be excessively tall; for long reports, consider a platform PDF or structured report data instead.
API output is missing rows
Check pagination and query filters, then compare the returned dimensions and metrics against the intended report. The Analytics Data API returns data, not a rendered page, so missing visual elements are a formatting or report-assembly issue rather than a screenshot issue.
Build reliability into the reporting workflow
Regardless of method, test with the real account boundaries and report filters before making delivery recurring. Inspect the artifact, confirm its date range and destination, decide how failures are surfaced, and restrict stored reports to intended recipients. These checks are implementation safeguards, not a claim that any approach has a particular success rate.
Favor the least complex route that produces the required artifact: native scheduling minimizes custom upkeep when its format and destination fit; an API gives control over data assembly but requires a reporting pipeline; browser automation is appropriate when the visual rendering itself is required and you can maintain the browser workflow.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a marketing report be automated without producing screenshots?
Yes. A dashboard scheduler can deliver a platform-generated report, and an analytics API can supply structured data for a custom report. Use a screenshot only when the rendered visual is part of the requirement.
Does Playwright provide recurring scheduling for reports?
No. Playwright documents browser navigation and screenshot capture; scheduling, storage, authentication, and failure notifications must be supplied by the surrounding workflow.
