A browser that never opens points to an OAuth handoff; “OAuth error: Invalid code” usually means an expired or incomplete code; a 403 after sign-in points to authorization or network access; and repeated login prompts can involve token renewal or credential storage. Capture the exact error and identify your account type and environment before changing settings. Anthropic’s login troubleshooting guide separates these cases because they need different fixes.
First, identify which sign-in path you are using
Claude Code can authenticate through several routes, and they are not interchangeable. Check whether you intend to sign in with a claude.ai account, an organization invitation, a Claude Console account, a cloud provider, or a self-hosted gateway. The supported options and setup details are described in Anthropic’s authentication documentation.
- claude.ai: Claude Code access requires a Pro or Max subscription; a free claude.ai account does not include it.
- Team or Enterprise: use the account invited to the organization. Organization roles and access can be controlled by an administrator.
- Claude Console: access depends on the Console account and its assigned role. The documented roles include “Claude Code” and “Developer.” Keyless Console sign-in requires Claude Code v2.1.242 or later; server-managed settings for that sign-in require v2.1.257 or later. Version requirements can change, so check the current authentication page.
- Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Agent Platform, Microsoft Foundry, or a self-hosted gateway: configure the relevant provider credentials or gateway identity. These modes do not use the standard browser OAuth flow.
An ANTHROPIC_API_KEY in the environment can also change the route: Claude Code may use the key rather than the subscription OAuth identity. If a browser does not open and you expected browser sign-in, check for that override before repeatedly retrying.
If the browser does not open or return to the terminal
- At the Claude Code login prompt, press
cto copy the login URL, then open it in a browser. Anthropic documents this as the fallback when the browser does not open automatically. - Complete sign-in in that browser. If it displays a code instead of redirecting to Claude Code, copy the full code and paste it into the terminal prompt labeled “Paste code here if prompted.”
- If the interactive prompt will not accept pasted text, run
claude auth login; Anthropic recommends this command when the code needs to be read from standard input.
This mismatch is common when Claude Code runs on a remote host while the browser is on your local machine—for example, in WSL2, SSH, or a container. Open the copied login URL in the local browser, finish the browser step there, and provide the resulting code to the waiting remote terminal. Do not expect the remote machine to receive a browser redirect addressed to a different host.

For WSL when no browser opens, Anthropic’s troubleshooting guide includes a Windows-browser option using the BROWSER environment variable. Follow the current command on that guide rather than guessing an executable path: browser installation paths can differ between Windows systems.
Fix “OAuth error: Invalid code”
Anthropic identifies an expired code or a truncated copy-and-paste as causes of this error. Start a fresh login, complete the browser step promptly, and make sure you copy the whole code without extra characters. If the terminal is remote, use the local machine’s browser and paste its returned code into the remote terminal. If needed, press c at the login prompt to copy the full URL instead of trying to reconstruct it.
Retrying an old code will not repair it; begin a new OAuth attempt. If a new code still fails, record the exact error and whether the browser redirected, showed a code, or never reached a completion page. Those details distinguish a handoff problem from an account or authorization denial.

If sign-in completes but a request returns 403
A successful browser login proves that the identity step completed; it does not prove that the account is entitled to make the requested Claude Code call. For API Error: 403 ... Request not allowed, check the account and access path rather than repeatedly exchanging OAuth codes.
- claude.ai account: confirm that the account has an active Pro or Max subscription in account settings.
- Console: have an administrator check Console Settings → Members and confirm the user has the “Claude Code” or “Developer” role.
- Corporate network: if you are behind a proxy, check whether it is interfering with the request. A valid login can still be followed by a blocked request.
For the Enterprise message “Claude Code access has not been granted for this account,” the organization’s role or group assignment is the issue. Anthropic’s troubleshooting guidance says an Owner must assign a custom role that grants access or change the user to a standard role such as User; the user must then log in again. A local CLI setting cannot grant organization permission.
Do not treat every HTTP error as an OAuth failure. Anthropic’s API error reference defines 401 as an authentication error, 402 as a billing error, 403 as a permission error, and 429 as rate-limit or spend-limit behavior. That linked reference is in Spanish; use the code distinctions carefully and consult the current documentation for the applicable account route.

If a paid account says “This organization has been disabled”
Check whether an old ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is overriding the subscription login. Anthropic notes that Claude Code may use the key when it is present and approved, which can send requests through a different account route than the paid claude.ai subscription you expected.
- In the current shell, unset the variable:
unset ANTHROPIC_API_KEYon macOS or Linux, orRemove-Item Env:ANTHROPIC_API_KEYin PowerShell. - Remove the stale export from the shell profile that restores it, such as
~/.zshrc,~/.bashrc, or~/.profile. On Windows, check the PowerShell profile and user environment variables. - Close and relaunch Claude Code, then run
/statusto confirm the active authentication method.
Anthropic specifically notes that non-interactive -p mode always uses the API key when one is present. If you need that mode, make sure the key is intentionally configured for the organization you want to use.

For a token-expired session, run /login in Claude Code and complete authentication again. If you are unsure which credentials are active or need a clean reset, run /logout, close Claude Code, restart it with claude, and sign in again. Check that your system clock is accurate if the token expires or is rejected repeatedly; timestamp validation depends on correct system time.

On macOS, Claude Code normally stores credentials in the encrypted Keychain. If a Keychain write fails—for example, when the Keychain is locked during an SSH session—credentials may fall back to ~/.claude/.credentials.json. Run claude doctor from the shell and follow Anthropic’s recovery instructions if it reports that Keychain access is not writable. Credential-storage locations differ on Linux and Windows, so avoid deleting credential files by guesswork; use the documented /login and /logout flows.
Check network, proxy, and installation issues when the symptoms fit
If the browser cannot reach the login service, TLS validation fails, or requests time out, the problem may be connectivity rather than OAuth credentials. Claude Code requires internet access and availability in a supported region; Anthropic’s advanced setup documentation links to the relevant prerequisites.
For a corporate proxy, Claude Code uses HTTP_PROXY and HTTPS_PROXY. Anthropic’s proxy guidance says NO_PROXY and SOCKS proxies are not supported. A company-specific certificate authority may require SSL_CERT_FILE and NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS; use the organization’s CA bundle and the documented configuration rather than disabling certificate checks.

Run /doctor inside a working Claude Code session for an automated check, or claude doctor from the shell if the application cannot start. The troubleshooting guide has separate directions for OAuth errors, 403s, disabled organizations, Enterprise access, remote callbacks, and expired tokens.

Contact Anthropic support for account, subscription, or billing problems that remain after checking the sign-in route and organization access. Include the exact error text, the point where the flow fails, whether you are using claude.ai, Console, an organization account, or a cloud provider, and whether Claude Code runs locally, in WSL2, over SSH, or in a container. Do not include API keys or login codes in a support request.
