Choose based on whether you need an integrated coding loop, live Chrome debugging, or structured browser automation.
Choose the browser integration that fits the task
These options overlap, but they are not interchangeable. VS Code’s browser tools are part of its coding-agent workflow; Chrome DevTools MCP centers on controlling and inspecting Chrome; Playwright MCP exposes browser automation through an MCP client. Cloudflare Browser Run is a hosted browser service, a different execution model from installing a local MCP server.

Use VS Code tools for an integrated coding loop
If the goal is to start your app, open it in a browser, test a flow, and iterate on code, VS Code’s built-in tools are a natural fit. Its documentation says browser tools are enabled by default through the workbench.browser.enableChatTools setting. This is not an external MCP server installation.
Use Chrome DevTools MCP for live-browser debugging
Choose Chrome DevTools MCP when the task calls for inspecting or controlling Chrome and using debugging-oriented browser information. It requires adding the chrome-devtools-mcp package to an MCP-compatible client.

Use Playwright MCP for structured automation
Playwright MCP suits tasks where the agent should interact with browser pages using the project’s structured browser tools. Its documentation covers browser selection and isolated or persistent sessions. For complex flows, understand which tools execute code and what authority they carry.
Set up an MCP browser server
The exact configuration fields vary by client. Use the client-specific instructions on the relevant project page, and check those pages again before setup because package versions, supported clients and browser prerequisites can change.
Chrome DevTools MCP
- Install Node.js (latest LTS), npm, and current stable Chrome, as required by the Chrome guide.
- In a Codex CLI terminal, add the server with
codex mcp add chrome-devtools -- npx chrome-devtools-mcp@latest. - Start or refresh the MCP client as needed, then ask the agent to inspect a page and perform a low-risk action to confirm it can reach the browser.
The Chrome guide also provides other client-specific commands and a JSON configuration option. Follow the current instructions for your client rather than copying a configuration format intended for another application.
Playwright MCP
- Install Node.js 20 or newer and an MCP client.
- Configure the client to run command
npxwith argument@playwright/mcp@latest, adapting the wrapper to the client’s configuration format. - Choose whether the task should use headed or headless operation and which supported browser to use. The project documents Chrome, Firefox, WebKit and Microsoft Edge, and headed mode by default.
- Ask the agent to navigate to a public test page and verify a simple interaction before using it on an important workflow.
Use the project’s setup guide for current client-specific examples and syntax. Do not assume that installing the package alone installs or configures every browser dependency required by your environment.

VS Code built-in browser tools
- In VS Code, check the setting
workbench.browser.enableChatTools; the documentation says it is enabled by default. - Start an agent session and state which application or URL to open, what action to perform, and what observable result counts as success.
- Let the agent inspect and interact with the page, then review the observed outcome and any changes it proposes.
No external MCP server configuration is needed for these built-in tools.
Write a task the agent can verify
Specific instructions reduce guesswork. Name the target page, the interaction, and the evidence you expect back. For example: “Open my local application, submit the sign-up form with the test account, and tell me whether a confirmation appears. Do not submit any real purchase or change account settings.” For a public demo, Playwright’s documentation uses the TodoMVC page at https://demo.playwright.dev/todomvc and asks users to add todo items.
- State the expected result. Say what visible change or confirmation should occur, not just “test the page.”
- Choose the session deliberately. Use an isolated page for a public site or local app; share an existing page only if the task needs its logged-in state.
- Ask for targeted interaction. Have the agent navigate, inspect content or accessible elements, and click or type only where needed.
- Request useful verification. Ask for a screenshot when layout matters, and a page-content or accessible snapshot when the question is which control or message appeared.
- Check persistence when relevant. Reload the page to see whether the state survived, and ask for console or network details when diagnosing a technical failure.
- Review actions and end access. Inspect what the agent did and revoke a shared page when the task is complete.
Choose isolated or authenticated browser state
Session choice determines what the agent can see and do. VS Code describes agent-opened pages as private, in-memory sessions that do not share cookies or storage with other browser tabs. Sharing a page makes that existing tab’s session data available to the agent; VS Code documents explicit sharing and immediate revocation.
For a task that only needs a public page or a local app without personal credentials, prefer an isolated session. If testing requires a logged-in account, share only the needed page and only with an agent you trust. Microsoft Edge’s guidance likewise warns that auto-connecting exposes the active session, including logged-in accounts, cookies and other data surfaced through JavaScript APIs.

Chrome’s official guide warns: “Because your agent will be able to view and interact with the pages it accesses, it can effectively act on your behalf if you connect it to a browser with an active, authenticated session.” Treat browser access as delegated authority, not as read-only page viewing. Use a test account where possible, avoid exposing sensitive pages, and revoke shared access when finished.
Understand the risks of browser automation
- Page content can be sensitive. A browser session may show private messages, account data or other personal information. Limit the pages and state you expose.
- Interactions can have real effects. An agent with an authenticated session may submit forms or change data as you. Set boundaries for consequential actions and supervise them.
- Arbitrary code requires extra trust. Playwright MCP documents
browser_run_code_unsafefor running arbitrary JavaScript in the Playwright server process and describes it as RCE-equivalent. Use it only with trusted MCP clients and only when the task warrants that capability. - Review the result, not just the agent’s summary. Confirm the expected page state, and inspect relevant console or network information for debugging tasks.
Troubleshoot common setup and automation failures
The client cannot start the MCP server
Check that Node.js and npm are installed and available in the environment where the MCP client launches the command. For Chrome DevTools MCP, confirm that Chrome is installed and meets the guide’s current stable-browser requirement. For Playwright MCP, confirm Node.js is version 20 or newer. Recheck the selected client’s configuration syntax and the project’s current setup page.
The agent cannot see the page you expect
Determine whether the integration opened a separate isolated page or is meant to access a user-shared tab. In VS Code, an agent-opened page does not inherit cookies or storage from other tabs; explicitly share the existing page only if authentication is necessary.
The page loads but the requested action does not work
Make the instruction more specific: identify the control or workflow, the input to use, and the success signal. Ask the agent to inspect the page’s accessible elements or content before interacting, then use a screenshot if visual layout is the issue. If the result depends on client-side loading, ask it to wait for the relevant visible state before checking.

The outcome is unclear after a click or submission
Ask for evidence tied to the expected result: the confirmation text, changed page content, screenshot, or relevant console/network information. If the action should persist, reload and check again. Avoid repeating an action that may have submitted a payment or changed real account data until you verify its status.
The browser has access to more data than the task needs
Stop the task, switch to an isolated session or test account, and revoke any shared page access. Do not use auto-connect or a persistent authenticated session by default; enable it only when the test requires it and the agent is trusted.

The cited setup documentation does not establish a universal speed, success-rate or cost figure for these integrations, so choose based on workflow and operating model rather than an unsupported benchmark. A local browser workflow depends on the client, browser and environment you configure; a hosted browser service has different requirements and terms.
