To capture an Instagram post, open the post and use your phone’s built-in screenshot shortcut. On an iPhone with Face ID, quickly press and release the Side and Volume Up buttons together. On an iPhone with a Home button, press the Side and Home buttons together. On most Android phones, press Power and Volume Down together. The image is saved in your phone’s photo app.
This guide covers the exact steps, where to find the file, what happens to Instagram notifications, and alternatives when the hardware buttons do not work.
Capture the post that is currently on screen
- Open Instagram and navigate to the feed post, carousel slide, or other screen you want to preserve.
- Wait for the image or video frame, caption, and controls you want to appear. A screenshot records the display exactly as shown; it does not download the original upload.
- Use the shortcut for your phone model below.
- Open the screenshot preview or your photo app to crop, annotate, share, or move the image.
For a carousel, move to the specific slide before taking the capture. For a video post, pause at the frame you need. If Instagram’s interface is covering part of the image, dismiss the controls first.
How to screenshot an Instagram post on an iPhone
iPhone models with Face ID
- Display the Instagram post.
- Quickly press and release the Side button and Volume Up button at the same time.
- Release both buttons immediately. A thumbnail appears briefly in the lower-left corner.
Press the thumbnail to crop, draw on, add text, or share the capture. Swipe the thumbnail away to keep editing later. Apple’s documented shortcut is “quickly press and release the side button and the volume up button at the same time.”

iPhone models with a Home button
- Open the post you want to capture.
- Quickly press and release the Side button and Home button together.
- Use the thumbnail preview if you need to mark up or crop the image.
On some older models, the power button may be on the top edge rather than the side; it is still the button used with Home.
Find the screenshot on iPhone
iPhone screenshots are saved to the Photos library. In Photos, open Collections, scroll to Media Types, and select Screenshots. You can also find the image in your recent library and search for “Screenshots.”
Alternatives when iPhone buttons are difficult to press
Apple also supports software-triggered screenshots through Siri, AssistiveTouch, and Back Tap. These options are useful if a case makes the buttons hard to reach or if you have limited hand mobility. The exact menu names can vary slightly by iOS release, so use the Settings search field for “AssistiveTouch” or “Back Tap.”
How to screenshot an Instagram post on Android
Most current Android phones
- Open the Instagram post and position it exactly as you want it captured.
- Press Power and Volume Down at the same time.
- Release quickly. Android normally shows a thumbnail and controls for editing or sharing.
Google’s standard instruction is to press the Power and Volume down buttons together. Button placement and the timing required can differ between Samsung, Google Pixel, Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and other manufacturers.

Use the Android power menu if the shortcut fails
- Press and hold the Power button for a few seconds.
- Tap Screenshot in the power menu.
- Return to the preview or photo app to edit and share the image.
If neither method appears, consult your phone manufacturer’s support instructions. Some devices expose a screenshot command in Quick Settings, a gesture panel, or an accessibility menu instead of the standard two-button shortcut.
Find the screenshot on Android
In Google Photos, open Collections, select On this device, then open Screenshots. Older or manufacturer-customized phones may store captures in the Gallery app instead. If you cannot see the image, check the Screenshots folder in your file manager and confirm that Photos or Gallery has permission to access device media.
What an Instagram screenshot contains
A screenshot is a pixel image of your phone’s display at that moment. It may include the account name, caption, likes, comments, navigation bars, notifications, or other overlays that are visible. It does not preserve the source file’s original resolution, metadata, or a clean copy of an image hidden behind Instagram’s interface.
For a cleaner result, hide Instagram’s controls before capturing, scroll so the relevant text is visible, and crop the system status bar afterward. If you need several parts of a long caption or comment thread, take multiple captures rather than assuming one screenshot will include content that is off-screen.

Does Instagram notify someone when you screenshot a post?
Current reporting dated February 2026 says Instagram does not notify the poster when you screenshot an ordinary feed post. That statement applies to a regular post visible in the feed or on a profile, not every type of Instagram message or media.
Disappearing direct-message media is different
Instagram can show screenshot status for disappearing photos or videos sent in Direct messages and for conversations using Vanish Mode. A 2022 U.S. Department of Justice court filing describing disappearing Instagram Direct messages also notes that senders can see message status, including whether the recipient took a screenshot. Do not treat the ordinary-post rule as permission to assume that disappearing DM media is notification-free.
Instagram can change product behavior. If the notification question is critical, check the current Instagram Help information for the specific message type and mode you are using before capturing it.
Troubleshooting: when the screenshot does not work
The phone opens a different control
Button timing matters. Press the two buttons together and release immediately; holding them can open the power menu, activate the emergency screen, or change volume. Remove a thick case temporarily if it prevents both buttons from being pressed at once.

Only one button seems to register
Try the alternate software method: use the iPhone screenshot options in Siri, AssistiveTouch, or Back Tap, or use Android’s Power-menu Screenshot command. If a physical button is damaged, an accessibility shortcut is safer than repeatedly forcing it.
The capture is black, blank, or missing content
First confirm that the post itself is visible before pressing the buttons. Wait for images or video frames to load, and try again after dismissing a temporary Instagram sheet. Some apps intentionally restrict screenshots of protected screens; if Android or iOS displays a warning, the operating system—not the Instagram post layout—is preventing that capture.
You cannot find the saved file
On iPhone, check Photos → Collections → Media Types → Screenshots. On Android, check Google Photos → Collections → On this device → Screenshots, then look in Gallery or your file manager if your phone uses a manufacturer photo app. Restarting the photo app can refresh its index after a large capture batch.
The screenshot looks too small or blurry
A screenshot cannot contain more detail than the display rendered. Increase the phone’s display resolution or zoom level only if it helps readability, and capture the post at the largest useful on-screen size. For the original image, use Instagram’s permitted save or share functions instead of enlarging a screenshot.
