Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse Rails to emit the Open Graph tags, and treat image rendering as a separate decision. For a fixed design, store a public PNG or JPEG and reference it with an absolute og:image URL. For per-post titles, authors, or themes, render a card from page data, cache the result, and expose a stable public URL. Rails’ content_for and named layout yields make the metadata integration straightforward; they do not themselves draw the image.
What an Open Graph image implementation contains
A social preview has two independent parts:
- Metadata: HTML in the document head, including
og:title,og:description,og:url,og:type, andog:image. - Artwork: a publicly reachable image URL. It can be a static asset, a pre-generated file, or an endpoint that renders a card from record data.
og:image is URL-valued. Link previews fetch that URL as a crawler, so it must be absolute, use HTTPS in production, and remain reachable without a login, session cookie, or JavaScript interaction. Keep the image URL stable when possible; changing it for every request makes caches and debuggers less predictable.
Add page-specific Open Graph tags with a Rails layout
Reserve a named head region in app/views/layouts/application.html.erb. The default values keep pages valid when a view does not provide custom metadata.
<!doctype html>
<html>
<head>
<title><%= content_for?(:title) ? yield(:title) : "My Rails site" %></title>
<%= csrf_meta_tags %>
<%= csp_meta_tag %>
<meta property="og:title" content="<%= content_for?(:og_title) ? yield(:og_title) : "My Rails site" %>">
<meta property="og:description" content="<%= content_for?(:og_description) ? yield(:og_description) : "" %>">
<meta property="og:type" content="<%= content_for?(:og_type) ? yield(:og_type) : "website" %>">
<meta property="og:url" content="<%= content_for?(:og_url) ? yield(:og_url) : request.original_url %>">
<meta property="og:image" content="<%= content_for?(:og_image) ? yield(:og_image) : image_url("default-og.png") %>">
<%= yield :head %>
</head>
<body><%= yield %></body>
</html>
In a post view, populate the fields with escaped Rails helpers. image_url creates an absolute URL when your default host is configured.

Define the URL policy in one helper so every controller and view agrees on the rendering route:
module ApplicationHelper
def og_image_url(post)
if post.og_image_key.present?
rails_blob_url(post.og_image_key)
else
post_og_image_url(post, host: request.host, protocol: request.protocol)
end
end
end
In production, set default_url_options[:host] (and HTTPS) for mailers, jobs, and any context without a request. If a crawler receives a relative URL, a development hostname, or a private storage URL, the preview can fail even though the page itself renders correctly.
Choose how the image itself is rendered
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Static public asset | One design shared by many pages or a small fixed set | Simple and fast, but no per-record text |
| Pre-generated card | Posts change occasionally and can be rendered on publish/update | Extra job and storage; excellent request-time reliability |
| Cached image endpoint | Titles, authors, or themes vary and should update automatically | Needs renderer, cache policy, and failure handling |
| Active Storage variant | Resize/crop existing uploaded imagery | Variants transform an image; they do not compose a complete branded card from arbitrary text and layout |
Static asset
Put a finished file at app/assets/images/default-og.png (or the equivalent public asset location) and use image_url("default-og.png"). This is the right answer when every page can share one preview or when editors supply finished artwork.
Active Storage for transformations
Active Storage representations can resize and transform an existing image and return a processed URL. Processing is lazy: the first request may perform the transformation, while later requests can reuse the generated variant. Restrict transformation options instead of passing arbitrary user input, and apply a strict ImageMagick security policy where ImageMagick is used. Use a dedicated compositor when the card needs a background, multiple text blocks, logos, and precise typography.
Pre-generation on publish
Generate a card when a post is published or its title/author changes, store the result, and save an immutable key on the record. A background job prevents a crawler’s first request from waiting on rendering. Keep the old image until the new one succeeds, then switch the metadata URL; this avoids broken previews during retries.

Request-time endpoint with caching
A route can render SVG or PNG from a signed record identifier. Cache by a versioned key such as post-#{id}-og-#{updated_at.to_i}, set a long-lived Cache-Control header for immutable files, and return a useful error status when the record is missing. Do not expose unrestricted HTML, CSS, file paths, or network fetches as query parameters: those inputs can become security and server-side request-forgery risks.
One documented architecture outside Rails accepts query parameters, chooses a layout, renders SVG with Satori, and optionally converts it to PNG with resvg-js. Its repository uses Next.js for the frontend and image route, so treat it as an architectural example rather than a Rails package recommendation.
A minimal Rails image endpoint
The following controller illustrates the contract; replace OgCardRenderer with the renderer your application operates and secures.
class OgImagesController < ApplicationController
def show
post = Post.find(params[:post_id])
version = post.updated_at.to_i
key = "og/post/#{post.id}/#{version}.png"
image = Rails.cache.fetch(key, expires_in: 7.days) do
OgCardRenderer.render(
title: post.title,
author: post.author.name,
width: 1200,
height: 630
)
end
send_data image,
type: "image/png",
disposition: "inline",
cache_control: "public, max-age=604800, immutable"
rescue ActiveRecord::RecordNotFound
head :not_found
end
end
# config/routes.rb
resources :posts do
get "og-image", to: "og_images#show", as: :og_image
end
Have the helper call post_og_image_url(post). If rendering is expensive, move generation to a job and make this action serve only stored bytes. Ensure your cache key changes whenever any visible card input changes, including a template revision.
Dimensions, formats, and metadata details
og-image.org’s getting-started documentation uses 1200×630 for its templates and demonstrates matching og:image:width and og:image:height tags. That is a generator recommendation, not a universal social-platform rule; verify the current specification of each platform you target before hard-coding a different canvas.

PNG is useful for crisp text and transparency; JPEG is smaller for photographic backgrounds. WebP support varies among crawlers, so provide a broadly supported format when compatibility is more important than byte size. Keep important text away from edges because consumers may crop previews.
Validate before publishing
- Request the page as an unauthenticated client and inspect the final HTML source, not only the browser DOM.
- Confirm every required property appears once, has escaped content, and uses an absolute HTTPS URL.
- Open the image URL in a private window and with a command-line HTTP client; check status, content type, redirects, and that no cookie is required.
- Change a post title and verify the image cache key and
og:imageURL change (or that the stored file is replaced atomically). - Test long titles, missing authors, non-ASCII text, transparent logos, and records with no featured image.
Common failures and fixes
The crawler gets a relative or localhost URL
Set production host and protocol defaults, and use post_url/image_url helpers. Background jobs need explicit host: and protocol:.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The image returns HTML, a redirect loop, or 403
Inspect the endpoint with an unauthenticated request. Exempt only the image route from authentication as appropriate, preserve HTTPS proxy headers, and return the correct image content type.
Text is stale after an edit
Include every visible input and a template version in the cache key, or regenerate on commit through a job. Do not overwrite the old file until the replacement is complete.
Active Storage processing fails
Check that the required image-processing service is installed, that the blob is accessible, and that transformation parameters are from an allowlist. Large originals can make first processing slow; pre-process them in a job.

The card is blank or missing fonts
Headless or server-side renderers need fonts and assets available in their runtime. Bundle approved fonts, use deterministic CSS, and log renderer errors with the post ID and template version.

- Prefer pre-generation when content changes are predictable; it moves CPU work off crawler requests.
- Cache aggressively with a versioned key and immutable URLs. Invalidate only when card inputs change.
- Bound work: cap title length, image dimensions, render time, and external asset fetches.
- Observe failures: record render duration, cache hits, status codes, and job retries without logging secrets.
- Keep a fallback: a static default image prevents an empty preview when a custom card cannot be rendered.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a rendered page or element through one request, so your Rails app can expose a preview route and let the service produce the image. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed; the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
For a page whose final HTML already contains the Open Graph design, call the API (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const data = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', data));
ScreenshotNeo supports full-page and element captures, custom CSS and JavaScript, device and retina settings, waits, request blocking, cookies and headers, resizing, caching with a chosen TTL, signed links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture, PDFs, and HTML/CSS-to-image. Every plan includes every feature. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, with yearly billing providing two months free.

FAQ
Do I need a Rails gem to generate OG cards?
No. Rails supplies the metadata helpers and routing; the artwork can come from a static file, Active Storage transformation, your own renderer, or a hosted capture service.
Should the image URL be the same as the page URL?
No. It should be a separate, publicly fetchable image URL. The page’s canonical URL belongs in og:url.
Can I put user-entered HTML directly into a card renderer?
Do not. Treat titles and names as text, escape them, constrain length, and allowlist any styling or asset inputs.

How can I preview the tags Rails is sending?
Fetch the rendered page as an unauthenticated client and inspect its HTML source; browser inspector changes do not prove what a crawler receives.
When should a card be regenerated?
Regenerate whenever a visible input or the card template changes, using a versioned cache key or stored file.
Is 1200×630 mandatory?
No. It is the size shown in og-image.org’s template documentation; confirm the requirements of your target platforms.
