The Chrome browser on Windows, macOS and Linux does not show a normal Snipping Tool window. It does include screenshot commands inside DevTools, including area, viewport and full-page capture. A Chromebook runs ChromeOS, which has a user-facing Screen Capture tool for full-screen, partial-area and window screenshots.
Use the desktop instructions if you mean the Chrome browser. Use the ChromeOS instructions if you mean a Chromebook.

Desktop DevTools captures webpage content, while ChromeOS Screen Capture captures what is shown on the device. That distinction matters: a full-page DevTools image can include content below the fold, whereas a normal screen snip only includes the visible display.
How to screenshot part of a webpage in desktop Chrome
- Open the page in Chrome.
- Open DevTools. You can use Chrome’s developer-tools shortcut for your operating system or open the browser menu and choose the developer-tools option.
- Open the DevTools Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+P on macOS.
- Type screenshot.
- Choose Capture area screenshot.
- Drag around the part of the webpage you need. Chrome saves the resulting image through the browser’s normal download flow.
Keep DevTools docked while using area capture. Chrome’s documentation notes that area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked. If the command is missing or the selection does nothing, dock DevTools and try again.

Capture the visible viewport or a full webpage
Viewport screenshot
Open the Command Menu, search for screenshot, and select the command for capturing the current viewport. This records the page as currently rendered in the browser window, including the current scroll position and viewport dimensions.
Full-size screenshot
Use the full-size screenshot command from the same search results. Chrome captures page content beyond the visible viewport, which is useful for documentation, design review and bug reports involving content below the fold. Very long or highly dynamic pages can take longer to render and may change while Chrome assembles the image.
When a full-page image is not identical to a normal scroll
- Lazy-loaded images may appear only after they enter the page’s loading region.
- Sticky headers can repeat or remain fixed, depending on how the page is rendered.
- Animations, live data and rotating advertisements may change during capture.
- A page that requires scrolling, clicking or consent acceptance may not expose every state in one automatic image.
How to take a screenshot on a Chromebook
- Open the shelf or time menu and choose Screen Capture, or press the Chromebook’s dedicated Screenshot key if it has one.
- If there is no Screenshot key, press Shift+Ctrl+Show windows. You can also open Settings and search for Screen Capture.
- On the capture toolbar, choose full screen, partial screen or window.
- For a partial capture, drag over the area. For a window capture, select the window. Confirm the capture.
ChromeOS copies screenshots to the clipboard and saves them in Downloads by default. The Screen Capture controls let you change the destination folder. A managed school or work Chromebook can restrict available settings, so an administrator may need to enable some features.

Screen Capture also offers Screen record. Press Shift+Ctrl+Show windows, select Screen record, then choose full screen, partial screen or a window. Recording settings can include audio and camera input. A partial recording can be saved as WebM video or a GIF; GIF output does not include audio or video input. Choose the still-image controls when you need a snip rather than a recording.

Extensions: useful, but optional
A Chrome Web Store extension can add annotation, scrolling capture or workflow integrations when DevTools or ChromeOS Screen Capture is not enough. Before installing one, review the data permissions it requests and install only an extension you trust. On a work or school browser, an administrator may block installation or limit an extension’s site access. Chrome also provides controls for changing that site access after installation. No extension is required for the built-in methods above.

Troubleshooting
“Capture area screenshot” is unavailable or fails
Make sure DevTools is open and docked. Undocked DevTools is the documented limitation for area capture. Reopen the Command Menu and search for “screenshot” rather than relying on an old menu location.
The full-page image is incomplete
Wait for the page to finish loading, then retry. Expand sections that require a click, check lazy-loaded content, and remember that live or animated elements can change during capture. For a specific state, use an element or area capture after setting that state manually.
The Chromebook shortcut does nothing
Use the shelf/time menu to open Screen Capture, or open Settings and search for it. Confirm that you are pressing Show windows, not a similarly labeled key. On managed devices, administrator policy can limit features.
The screenshot is saved somewhere unexpected
ChromeOS uses Downloads by default but allows a different folder in Screen Capture settings. Check the clipboard as well: ChromeOS automatically copies screenshots there.

An extension cannot be installed
The browser may be managed by an employer or school, or the extension may request permissions that policy disallows. Ask the administrator, use the built-in capture route, or review the extension’s site-access settings.

- Dynamic pages should be captured only after the relevant selector, delay or network-idle condition; otherwise a screenshot can be technically successful but visually incomplete.
- Review permissions before installing extensions, especially where screenshots may contain private customer or workplace data.
