You cannot reliably stop visitors from screenshotting an ordinary webpage. If a browser can display text or images, a visitor may be able to capture them with operating-system tools, another application, an extension, or even a camera. Website scripts and styles can add friction, but they are not a dependable security boundary. Protect sensitive information by limiting what a user can access, and use managed-device controls, DRM, or watermarks only where they fit the content and threat.
What a website owner can—and cannot—control
A webpage is delivered to a visitor’s device so the browser can render it. Once content is visible, the site generally cannot control every way that device might record the display. A visitor may use a browser feature, an operating-system shortcut, another application, an extension, or an external camera. Blocking one route does not block all the others.
This distinction matters: a page owner controls the site and its responses; an organization managing a device may also control parts of the browser or endpoint. Those are different capabilities. A public website cannot impose the same restrictions on every visitor that an employer may configure in a managed browsing session.
- Prevention: stopping capture across the relevant methods and devices. Ordinary website code cannot guarantee this.
- Deterrence: making casual copying less convenient or less appealing. UI restrictions and warnings may help, but can be bypassed.
- Attribution: making a copied image traceable or visibly associated with its source or viewer. Watermarks can help, but do not stop copying.
Choose a measure based on the content, who controls the device, the capture methods that matter, and whether the goal is prevention, deterrence, or attribution. Do not describe a deterrent as screenshot-proof protection.

Why JavaScript and CSS do not make a page screenshot-proof
A site can use JavaScript or CSS to disable selected interactions, show a warning, or place a watermark over content. These measures affect the website’s rendered interface; they do not reliably control operating-system capture tools, other applications, every browser feature, or a camera pointed at the display.
Disabling a right-click menu, selecting text, or a particular keyboard action is therefore not a security boundary. Even if one action is blocked in one browser, a different capture path may remain available. It can also make a page harder to use without resolving the underlying exposure.
If information must remain confidential, do not send it to users who should not be able to see it. Hiding it with CSS after delivering it to the browser does not protect it. Use authorization and server-side access controls to decide what each user may retrieve, and limit each user’s view to the information needed for the task.
Choose controls by device, content, and capture path
| Approach | Who can apply it | What it can do | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Website JavaScript or CSS | The site owner | Add friction, disable selected UI actions, show warnings, or display a watermark | Cannot reliably control all capture methods outside the page. |
| Microsoft Edge DisableScreenshots policy | An administrator managing supported Edge clients | Restrict keyboard-shortcut and extension-API screenshot capture in supported environments | Microsoft cautions that Web Capture and tools outside the browser may still work. Platform and version support matter. |
| Edge for Business Screen Capture Protection | An organization configuring applicable managed protected sessions | Restrict capture as part of enterprise data controls | Applies to managed protected contexts, not arbitrary public website visitors. |
| DRM | A publisher or service using protected media playback | Restrict capture of protected streaming video on supported platform combinations | Effectiveness varies by operating system, browser, and hardware; it does not secure arbitrary webpage text or images. |
| Visible or individualized watermark | A site or organization publishing sensitive pages or documents | Deter casual leaks and provide attribution clues | A camera can still photograph the display; a watermark marks or traces content rather than preventing a copy. |
For a public website: reduce exposure before adding friction
For a site open to the public, the most dependable strategy is to avoid exposing information that a visitor is not authorized to have. Capture prevention is not a substitute for access control. Consider these steps in order:

- Decide what each user is allowed to see. Enforce that decision on the server, rather than relying on a visual overlay or client-side script.
- Limit the information in each view. Show only what a user needs, and avoid placing unrelated sensitive records together on one screen.
- Use friction only as a supplement. A warning or a disabled interface action may discourage casual copying, but do not promise that it prevents screenshots.
- Add a watermark when traceability is useful. A visible or individualized mark can help communicate ownership or associate a leaked copy with a viewer, but it cannot stop photography.
- Check accessibility and normal use. Restrictions on browser interactions can interfere with how people use a page. Assess that cost against the limited deterrence the restriction provides.
Do not rely on obscuring an element with CSS as confidentiality protection. If the page has already delivered information to the browser, hiding the rendered element does not undo that disclosure.
For managed work devices: evaluate browser controls precisely
If an organization administers the browser and device, it may be able to restrict particular screenshot paths for managed sessions. Microsoft Edge’s DisableScreenshots policy is described as blocking keyboard-shortcut and extension-API capture in supported environments. Microsoft’s caveat is important: Web Capture and tools outside the browser may still work. Administrators should verify support for their actual platform and version and test the capture methods relevant to their users.
Edge for Business Screen Capture Protection is another managed option for applicable protected browsing contexts. It is part of an organization’s managed controls, not a setting that a website owner can universally apply to visitors. A browser restriction also should not be described as eliminating every route to recording a screen.
For an enterprise deployment, assess the policy against the intended session, user workflow, platform, and capture paths. If a control blocks a shortcut but leaves another supported or external method available, document that scope accurately. The resulting protection depends on managed configuration and the environment in which the policy applies.

For paid video: consider DRM, not generic page scripts
DRM can restrict capture of protected video when the playback platform, browser, operating system, and hardware support the relevant protections. Its effectiveness is platform-dependent, and it is not a general mechanism for protecting ordinary webpage text, images, or arbitrary HTML.
For licensed or paid streaming video, evaluate DRM against the actual devices and playback browsers your audience uses. Do not infer that video protection makes the rest of a page screenshot-proof. If the concern is a transcript, account detail, or image shown outside the protected playback path, that content needs its own access and exposure controls.
Watermarks deter or trace; they do not block cameras
A visible watermark can signal that material is owned, restricted, or associated with a particular viewer. An individualized watermark may also provide attribution clues if a copy is shared. These are deterrence and traceability benefits, not capture prevention.
A watermark cannot stop a phone camera from photographing the screen, and it may not prevent software capture either. Where leak attribution matters, use watermarking alongside appropriate managed controls and access restrictions rather than treating the mark as a substitute for them.

A practical decision checklist
- Who controls the device? If it is a public visitor’s device, a site-level control cannot impose comprehensive restrictions. If it is organization-managed, evaluate administrator-configured browser controls.
- What is being protected? Ordinary page text and images require a different approach from DRM-protected video.
- Which capture path matters? Browser shortcuts and extension APIs are not the same as operating-system tools, another application, or a camera.
- Which platforms are in scope? Browser policies and DRM depend on supported configurations; verify the relevant platform and version rather than assuming universal coverage.
- What is the objective? Use access controls to limit disclosure, friction to deter casual copying, and watermarks to support attribution.
- What is the user cost? Restrictions may make ordinary interactions less convenient. Consider whether that friction is worthwhile for the specific risk.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to create website screenshots—not prevent visitors from taking them—ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF. For example, using cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for setup and options. Before capture, it can accept consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the outcome reported in response headers. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshooting common assumptions
“I disabled right-click, so screenshots are blocked.”
That changes one page interaction, not every capture method on a visitor’s device. Treat it as optional friction, not prevention. If the content is sensitive, limit what the user can access.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“The browser policy blocks every way to capture the screen.”
That is broader than Microsoft’s stated caveat for Edge DisableScreenshots: Web Capture and tools outside the browser may still work. Check the specific platform and version, and test the methods within your threat model.

“A watermark means a copy cannot be shared.”
A watermark may discourage sharing or help identify a copy, but it does not stop software capture or an external camera. Use it for deterrence or attribution, not as a blocking control.
“DRM protects all content on the page.”
DRM’s relevant scope is protected media playback on compatible configurations. It does not generally protect HTML text and images. Protect those through access decisions and limited disclosure.
“A hidden element is safe because visitors cannot see it.”
Visual concealment is not a replacement for server-side access control. Do not send information to a user who should not be able to retrieve it, then rely on page styling to keep it confidential.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can disabling screenshots in a browser stop someone from taking a photo of the screen?
No. Browser controls do not prevent an external camera from recording visible content.
Does a privacy filter prevent software screenshots?
No. A filter may reduce side-angle visibility, but it does not prevent operating-system or browser capture.
Can a website tell whether a visitor took a screenshot?
The controls covered here do not establish a general, reliable way for a public website to detect every screenshot method.
