A blank PhantomJS screenshot is usually caused by a failed page load, capturing before the desired content has rendered, incorrect viewport or clip dimensions, or a transparent background—not simply by the image file failing to save. Check the page.open status first, then readiness, dimensions, transparency, and page or network errors in that order. PhantomJS development is suspended, so a site that depends on browser features its older engine cannot handle may need a maintained browser instead.

Diagnose the capture in order

Use the following sequence before changing several settings at once. It separates a page that never loaded from one that loaded but was captured incorrectly, and gives you a useful failure signal instead of treating the existence of a PNG as proof of success.

  1. Log the status passed to the page.open callback. If it is fail, investigate the URL, network, TLS, proxy, or resource-loading path before changing image dimensions.
  2. If status is success, check whether the content you need is present and rendered at capture time. Page load completion is not the same as an application being ready.
  3. Log viewportSize and any clipRect. Confirm that both dimensions are positive and that the content falls inside the captured region.
  4. Check whether the output is transparent rather than empty. Inspect its alpha channel or view it over a contrasting background.
  5. If the above checks pass, log resource requests and JavaScript errors, then verify the PhantomJS executable and version actually being used.

Check whether the page loaded

The page.open API calls its callback when loading finishes and supplies a status of success or fail. The PhantomJS Quick Start checks for success before rendering. Adopt the same guard: a written image file does not establish that the requested page loaded.

Save the following as capture.js, then run it with phantomjs capture.js https://example.com. Replace the sample URL with the page you are diagnosing.

var page = require('webpage').create();
var system = require('system');
var url = system.args[1];

if (!url) {
  console.log('Usage: phantomjs capture.js https://example.com');
  phantom.exit(1);
}

page.onResourceRequested = function (request) {
  console.log('Request: ' + request.url);
};
page.onError = function (message, trace) {
  console.log('Page error: ' + message);
  trace.forEach(function (frame) {
    console.log('  ' + frame.file + ':' + frame.line);
  });
};
page.onConsoleMessage = function (message) {
  console.log('Page console: ' + message);
};

page.viewportSize = { width: 1280, height: 900 };
page.open(url, function (status) {
  console.log('Open status: ' + status);
  if (status !== 'success') {
    console.log('Page did not load successfully; no screenshot written.');
    phantom.exit(1);
    return;
  }

  page.render('capture.png');
  console.log('Wrote capture.png');
  phantom.exit();
});

The event handlers provide diagnostic output; they do not repair a failed request or unsupported page behavior. If status is fail, first confirm the URL is correctly formed and reachable from the machine running PhantomJS. Then narrow down TLS/OpenSSL, proxy, and network-resource issues as described below.

Wait for the content you need

A successful open callback is a useful checkpoint, but it does not guarantee that a single-page application, delayed image, animation, or other asynchronous work has reached the state you want to capture. The official homepage example waits briefly after opening a page before rendering, while the Quick Start renders in the callback. A fixed delay can help test a timing hypothesis, but it is not a universal readiness guarantee.

Prefer a page-specific condition when you know what signals readiness—for example, a target element exists and contains the expected text. The following is an implementation pattern: it polls for an element, stops after a bounded wait, and logs whether it found the element. Choose a selector and timeout suited to the page; this pattern is not a built-in PhantomJS readiness feature.

var page = require('webpage').create();
var system = require('system');
var url = system.args[1];
var selector = '#report-ready';
var attempts = 0;
var maxAttempts = 30;

page.open(url, function (status) {
  if (status !== 'success') {
    console.log('Open status: ' + status);
    phantom.exit(1);
    return;
  }

  var poll = setInterval(function () {
    attempts += 1;
    var ready = page.evaluate(function (selector) {
      return document.querySelector(selector) !== null;
    }, selector);

    if (ready || attempts >= maxAttempts) {
      clearInterval(poll);
      console.log('Ready selector found: ' + ready);
      page.render('capture.png');
      phantom.exit(ready ? 0 : 1);
    }
  }, 250);
});

Change #report-ready to a selector that appears only when the content you care about is available. If the site signals readiness through text, a class, or application state, test that exact signal instead. If you use a fixed timeout as a quick diagnostic, tune it to the page and log when capture occurs; increasing a delay indefinitely can hide a page that never finishes its work.

Verify viewport and clip dimensions

PhantomJS’s screen-capture documentation distinguishes the browser’s viewportSize from clipRect, which selects a region to capture. A custom clip can crop out content even when the page itself rendered correctly.

  • Log the width and height assigned to the viewport and clip rectangle.
  • Use positive width and height values, and verify the target content lies within the clip’s position and size.
  • Temporarily remove the custom clipRect and render again. If content appears, correct or remove the clipping settings.
  • Set a known viewport explicitly when the page’s layout depends on screen size; responsive pages may place content differently at different widths.

For an initial diagnosis, render without a clip and inspect the full visible viewport. Add clipping back only after confirming that the un-clipped capture contains the desired content.

Rule out a transparent image

A screenshot that looks blank in a viewer may contain transparent pixels. The PhantomJS FAQ explains that PhantomJS does not choose a page background color: the page determines it, and if no background is set, it remains transparent.

Inspect the image’s alpha channel or place it over a dark or colored background in an image viewer. If the content becomes visible, the capture may be valid and the issue is how its background is composited. The FAQ documents setting a white body background with this page evaluation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
page.evaluate(function() {
  document.body.bgColor = 'white';
});

Run it after the page body exists. Its precise placement depends on the page: if you evaluate before the body has been created, there is no body to style. A page’s own CSS may also determine the final background.

Inspect network and JavaScript failures

Once load status, timing, dimensions, and transparency are accounted for, look for errors that explain missing content. The PhantomJS troubleshooting guide recommends logging resource requests. The diagnostic script above logs each requested URL and page errors; use that output to find failed resources or exceptions associated with the missing portion of the page.

JavaScript console output is not automatically shown by default. The Quick Start notes that page console messages—including messages from evaluate()—need a page.onConsoleMessage handler if you want them in the command-line output. Add one when the page relies on console logging to reveal its state.

HTTPS works differently from HTTP

If HTTP pages load but HTTPS pages fail in the environment running PhantomJS, check the OpenSSL libraries, a targeted troubleshooting step called out by the project guide. Confirm the TLS-related error before changing the runtime environment; this is not a reason to alter screenshot dimensions or add unrelated capture delays.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows proxy causes unexpected delays

The troubleshooting guide notes that a default Windows proxy can cause major latency and gives --proxy-type=none as a workaround. Try that option only when a proxy is relevant to the environment and the delay or request behavior points to it. Disabling proxy use indiscriminately can prevent access in environments where a proxy is required.

Requests or scripts fail while the main document opens

A success status does not mean every image, script, or API request succeeded. Compare the resource log with the missing content and examine the associated page errors. If a required request fails, investigate its URL and environment access. If the resource succeeds but the page still omits content, the site’s script may depend on browser behavior PhantomJS does not provide.

Confirm the PhantomJS binary and runtime

Run phantomjs --version in the same environment and shell used for the capture. The troubleshooting guide warns that multiple installed versions can result in a different executable being invoked than expected. If the reported behavior does not match the script or installation you intended to use, locate the executable resolved by that shell and run the intended binary explicitly.

For historical environments, the FAQ says PhantomJS 1.4 or earlier still needs an X server, with Xvfb as a workaround; from 1.5 onward it is pure headless and does not require X11/Xvfb. Check the actual version before adding an X server to an old deployment recipe—installing Xvfb is not a universal fix for current PhantomJS releases.

Know when the page is beyond PhantomJS

The PhantomJS project README identifies 2.1 as the latest stable release and says development is suspended until further notice. The project homepage also describes PhantomJS as QtWebKit-backed and displays the suspended-development notice. This status does not prove that age caused any particular blank capture, but it matters when a site requires browser capabilities PhantomJS cannot handle.

If status is successful, your readiness condition is met, dimensions are correct, the image is not merely transparent, and logs show no fixable environmental error, test whether the target’s required scripts and browser features are compatible with PhantomJS. If the page depends on capabilities unavailable in that older engine, repeated timing or clipping changes will not add them. Consider a maintained browser automation stack when compatibility and ongoing support are requirements; the right replacement depends on the site’s features and your existing workflow.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot without maintaining a PhantomJS runtime, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its API returns an image or PDF from a GET request. For example, this cURL call saves a WebP capture of the sample URL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details. The equivalent Python request is:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

In Node.js, the request can be made with the built-in fetch API:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
  • Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; each of those steps can be turned off.
  • Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed.
  • An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
  • The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
