Recommended Free Tools
Yes—you can automate image creation inside WordPress, but image generation, review, uploading, and responsive delivery are separate operations. The clearest WordPress-native route documented for WordPress 7.0+ is a small plugin built on the provider-agnostic WordPress AI Client. It asks a configured image-capable model for inline image data, shows a preview, and uploads the approved file to the Media Library through an authenticated route.
What the automation actually does
A reliable workflow has four distinct stages:
- Generate: send a text prompt to an image model configured through WordPress AI Client.
- Review: display the returned image to an editor before creating a permanent attachment.
- Upload: post the approved image to a plugin route that creates a Media Library attachment.
- Deliver: let WordPress create registered image sizes and responsive
srcset/sizesattributes when the image is used in content.
Do not assume that responsive sizing compresses every file, performs art direction, or optimizes every installation. WordPress has supported responsive image attributes since 4.4 and creates smaller sizes on upload; the active theme can add more sizes.
Requirements and capability checks
- WordPress: 7.0 or later for the AI Client workflow described here.
- PHP: 7.4 or later, as specified by the example plugin header.
- Build tooling: Node.js 20 or later for compiling the frontend assets used by the tutorial pattern.
- Provider: a connection configured under Settings > Connectors, with a model that advertises image-generation capability. OpenAI and Google AI are examples, not guaranteed defaults.
- Permissions: generation and upload routes must be protected; the upload operation should require the
upload_filescapability.
The AI Client is provider/model agnostic. Your plugin should ask whether image generation is supported at runtime rather than hard-coding one vendor or model. If the capability is unavailable, hide or disable the image-generation interface and explain that an administrator must configure a compatible connection.
Recommended plugin architecture
Keep generation and upload separate
The generation endpoint returns image data for a preview. The upload endpoint accepts only an approved result and creates the attachment. This review gate prevents an accidental prompt, policy violation, or poor result from being committed to the Media Library.

Use custom routes for the feature
The tutorial pattern registers plugin-specific generation and upload routes. The standard authenticated WordPress REST API remains available, and the core media collection is /wp/v2/media, but that core route is not the same as your custom generation route. Keep their responsibilities and permission callbacks distinct.
Minimal server-side route pattern
The following illustrates the important checks. Adapt the request and response details to the current AI Client tutorial and your plugin namespace.
<?php
/**
* Plugin Name: Prompt Image Generator
* Requires PHP: 7.4
*/
add_action( 'rest_api_init', function () {
register_rest_route( 'prompt-image/v1', '/generate', [
'methods' => 'POST',
'callback' => 'prompt_image_generate',
'permission_callback' => function () {
return current_user_can( 'upload_files' );
},
] );
register_rest_route( 'prompt-image/v1', '/upload', [
'methods' => 'POST',
'callback' => 'prompt_image_upload',
'permission_callback' => function () {
return current_user_can( 'upload_files' );
},
] );
} );
function prompt_image_generate( WP_REST_Request $request ) {
if ( ! function_exists( 'wp_ai_client_prompt' ) ) {
return new WP_Error( 'ai_client_missing', 'WordPress AI Client is not available.', [ 'status' => 503 ] );
}
$prompt = sanitize_textarea_field( $request->get_param( 'prompt' ) );
if ( '' === $prompt ) {
return new WP_Error( 'empty_prompt', 'A prompt is required.', [ 'status' => 400 ] );
}
// Before calling the model, verify that the configured connection
// supports image generation. Return a clear error if it does not.
$result = wp_ai_client_prompt( $prompt, [ 'response_format' => 'inline_image' ] );
return rest_ensure_response( $result );
}
The exact capability-inspection method and response shape can change with the AI Client release, so consult the version of the official tutorial that matches your WordPress installation. Never treat a function’s existence as proof that a configured provider can generate images.
Build the editor interface
Prompt and preview flow
- Render a prompt field and a Generate button in the Media Library or a dedicated admin screen.
- POST the prompt to your generation route with the WordPress REST nonce.
- Read the inline image returned by the server and show it in a preview element.
- Offer Save to Media Library only after a successful preview.
- POST the approved image data, filename, MIME type, and optional title to the upload route.
- Return the attachment ID and URL, then insert the attachment into the editor or refresh the Media Library.
Client-side request example
const response = await fetch('/wp-json/prompt-image/v1/generate', {
method: 'POST',
headers: {
'Content-Type': 'application/json',
'X-WP-Nonce': window.wpApiSettings.nonce
},
body: JSON.stringify({ prompt: promptField.value })
});
if (!response.ok) {
throw new Error(`Generation failed (${response.status})`);
}
const generated = await response.json();
preview.src = generated.data_url;
preview.hidden = false;
saveButton.disabled = false;
Do not trust a filename, MIME type, or attachment metadata supplied by the browser. On the server, validate the decoded data, restrict accepted image types, use WordPress media functions to write the file, and verify the resulting attachment before returning success.

Uploading the approved image safely
Your upload callback should:
- Reject requests from users who lack
upload_files. - Require a non-empty image payload and enforce a size limit appropriate for your hosting plan.
- Decode and validate the image rather than accepting arbitrary base64 or a remote URL.
- Generate a unique filename and sanitize the title.
- Use WordPress’s media-handling functions to create the attachment and generate metadata.
- Return the attachment ID, source URL, and generated sizes; never expose provider credentials to JavaScript.
If you prefer the general REST interface, authenticated clients can POST media to /wp/v2/media. That route handles media, not prompt execution, provider selection, preview policy, or your custom business rules.
Automating prompts without losing editorial control
Use structured prompt fields
Instead of one opaque text box, collect subject, visual style, aspect ratio, brand colors, prohibited elements, and intended placement. Build the final prompt on the server so users cannot override safety or tenancy rules embedded by your application.
Store provenance
Save the original prompt, model/provider identifier returned by the client, requesting user, and generation timestamp in attachment metadata. This makes revisions and takedowns auditable without placing secrets in post content.
Regenerate deliberately
A regeneration action should create a new preview, not silently replace an existing attachment. Let an editor compare variants and explicitly choose which file to retain.

Responsive images after upload
Once an approved file becomes an attachment, WordPress normally creates registered smaller sizes and emits srcset and sizes when the image is rendered. The theme controls which additional sizes exist. Test the actual front end at the breakpoints your design uses; responsive delivery does not guarantee that the generated source has ideal compression, cropping, color profile, or subject framing.
Advanced orchestration with Abilities and MCP
For multi-step automation, the July 2026 developer guidance combines the Abilities API, AI Client, and MCP Adapter. An ability is a discoverable, runnable unit; the AI Client supplies provider-agnostic model access; MCP lets an AI agent invoke registered abilities. This is useful when an agent must generate, inspect, rename, and attach images across several operations. It is not required for ordinary prompt-to-image generation, and it adds authentication, approval, logging, and abuse-prevention work.
Choosing an implementation
| Approach | Requirements | Review before upload | Credential and permission model | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AI Client plugin | WordPress 7.0+, PHP 7.4+, Node.js 20+, configured image-capable provider | Yes, if generation and upload remain separate | Provider configured by site owner; routes protected with WordPress capabilities | Native editor workflow |
| Direct media REST upload | Authenticated WordPress REST client | Only if your client adds a preview step | REST authentication and media permissions | Uploading an already-created image |
| Abilities plus MCP | AI Client plus registered abilities and MCP Adapter | Determined by your ability design | Agent authentication, ability permissions, audit controls | Advanced agent orchestration |
None of these options establishes a universal provider price, generation speed, or image quality. Those depend on the connection and model configured on the individual site.
Troubleshooting
The Generate button is missing
Confirm WordPress is 7.0 or later, the AI Client is installed and loaded, and a connection exists under Settings > Connectors. Then verify that the selected model reports image-generation capability. A text-only model should make the feature unavailable.

The server reports that the AI Client function does not exist
Check plugin activation order, installation completeness, and the WordPress version. Fail closed with a clear administrative error; do not attempt to call an undefined function.
Generation succeeds but the preview is blank
Inspect the JSON response for an inline image field, confirm the data URL has a valid MIME prefix, and check browser console errors. Do not assume every provider returns identical response fields; normalize the provider response in your server callback.
Upload returns 401 or 403
Send a valid REST nonce and ensure the logged-in user has upload_files. For external clients, configure the WordPress authentication method required by your site and never place administrator credentials in browser code.
Images appear oversized or blurry on the front end
Inspect the rendered srcset and sizes, confirm the theme registers appropriate sizes, and verify that the source image has enough pixels for its intended display. Responsive selection cannot recover detail missing from the generated original.

Requests time out
Image generation can take longer than ordinary REST calls. Set a realistic server and client timeout, show progress, make retries idempotent, and avoid creating a Media Library attachment until a complete image has been received and reviewed.

If your WordPress workflow needs screenshots of reference pages, campaign previews, or generated landing pages, ScreenshotNeo provides a single HTTP request instead of maintaining a browser automation stack. It removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options. A basic capture is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Operational checklist
- Confirm WordPress, PHP, and Node.js versions before deployment.
- Configure and test an image-capable provider in Settings > Connectors.
- Gate the UI and routes on capability and
upload_files. - Keep generation, preview, and upload as separate operations.
- Validate decoded image data and metadata server-side.
- Record prompt and provenance metadata for each attachment.
- Test responsive output with the active theme and real breakpoints.
- Add timeouts, progress states, retry handling, and audit logs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does WordPress generate images by itself after installing the AI Client?
No. A site owner must configure a provider and model that supports image generation, and a plugin must expose the generation workflow.
Can I use the core /wp/v2/media route to generate an image?
No. That route manages media attachments. Prompt execution belongs in your AI Client integration; upload can then use a custom route or an authenticated media request.
Is MCP required for automated WordPress images?
No. MCP is an advanced option for letting AI agents invoke registered abilities. A conventional AI Client plugin is sufficient for prompt, preview, and upload.
