Preview a draft in the Block Editor
This is the built-in workflow for an author or logged-in teammate. It does not publish the post; the post remains a draft until a user with publishing capability changes its status.
- Open the draft. From the WordPress dashboard, open Posts and select the post you want to inspect.
- Open the preview controls. Select View in the editor’s top toolbar.
- Check the editor canvas. Use the Desktop, Tablet and Mobile width presets. You can also drag the canvas to a custom width between the presets.
- Open the front-end view. Select Preview in new tab. WordPress opens the post using the active site theme, rather than only showing the editing canvas. The current WordPress.org instructions document this menu in WordPress 7.1, updated August 19, 2026 (WordPress.org View feature guide).
- Return to editing. Keep the front-end tab open while you correct headings, images, links or spacing in the editor.
- Save and refresh. Select Save draft (or save the appropriate non-published status), switch to the preview tab and reload it. An already-open preview does not necessarily update until the latest changes have been saved and the tab refreshed, as WordPress.com explains in its preview support guide (WordPress.com preview support).
Why use both the canvas and the new tab?
The canvas is the fast responsive check
The View canvas lets you switch widths without leaving the editor. It is useful for spotting a heading that wraps awkwardly, an image that is too wide, or a column layout that becomes cramped on a phone. The manually resizable canvas is helpful when your audience uses a width between WordPress’s three presets.
The new tab is the theme-level check
Preview in new tab renders the post on the front end. That lets you inspect the site’s header, navigation, typography, post metadata, sidebar, footer and other theme-controlled presentation around the content. The editor canvas and the front-end tab answer different questions: one is a quick content-width test, while the other shows how the post is placed in the site design.

Review checklist before you publish
- Content: Read the title, introduction, headings, captions, lists and callouts at every responsive width.
- Media: Confirm images are visible, cropped as intended and accompanied by the correct captions or alternative text.
- Links: Open important internal and external links in the preview and verify that they point to the intended destination.
- Layout: Look for horizontal scrolling, clipped buttons, overlapping blocks, excessive empty space and text that becomes difficult to read on mobile.
- Theme context: Check the post title area, author/date information, categories, featured image, navigation and footer as they appear in the active theme.
- Latest saved version: After every substantial edit, save the draft and refresh the preview tab instead of judging an old rendering.
Share a draft with someone outside your WordPress site
The Block Editor’s normal preview is intended for you and people who can access the site. It is not a permanent public URL for an unpublished post. For an editor, client or subject-matter expert who has no WordPress account, the optional Public Post Preview plugin can enable an anonymous preview for a saved non-published post from the document settings.
How the temporary link works
- Install and activate Public Post Preview from the WordPress plugin directory.
- Open the saved draft and look in the document settings for the plugin’s anonymous-preview control.
- Enable the preview and copy the generated URL to the reviewer. The link contains an expiring nonce; the plugin’s current FAQ says its default validity is 48 hours (plugin listing and FAQ).
- Tell the reviewer that the link is temporary and should not be treated as a permanent published address. If the review takes longer than the validity period, create a new preview link from the post settings.
Because the URL grants anonymous access to the draft, send it only to the intended reviewers and avoid placing it in a public issue, forum or unrestricted document. The plugin is an optional sharing route, not a replacement for WordPress roles and capabilities.
Classic Editor: use the Preview button
If your site uses the Classic Editor and you do not see the Block Editor’s View menu, open the post and select Preview in the Publish box. WordPress opens a front-end preview without changing the post’s publication status. The Classic Editor workflow is documented in WordPress.org’s “Write posts (Classic Editor)” guide.

Understand post status while you review
A preview is not publication. WordPress distinguishes Draft, Pending Review, Scheduled, Private and Published states. A pending post is waiting for a user with publishing capability; a scheduled post is set to publish at a future time; a private post is restricted to authorized viewers. Do not publish early merely to let a reviewer see the page. Scheduled posts
Preview the saved scheduled version before its release time, then leave the status as scheduled. If you change the content, save it again and refresh the preview so the checked version is the one WordPress will publish.
Team review and permissions
Whether a colleague can edit, review, approve or publish depends on that user’s WordPress role and the capabilities assigned by the site. A preview URL does not grant editing or publishing rights; it only lets the recipient view the temporary rendering while the link remains valid.
Use revisions when a review introduces a mistake
Previewing is safest when you can recover from an unwanted edit. WordPress’s Revisions screen records earlier saved versions and can be used to compare changes and restore an earlier version. WordPress 7.0 introduced a new revisions screen; the current documentation is dated May 1, 2026 (WordPress.org Revisions). Save meaningful checkpoints before a large rewrite so the reviewer’s requested change can be reversed without rebuilding the post.
Troubleshooting preview problems
There is no View menu
You may be editing with the Classic Editor or another editing interface. Use the Classic Editor’s Preview button in the Publish box. If you are working in the Site Editor rather than editing an individual post, WordPress uses View site for the site-level view; the post-preview controls described above apply to a post or page in the Block Editor.

The preview shows old text
Save the draft first, then refresh the existing preview tab. If you opened several preview tabs, close the stale ones and use the tab refreshed after the latest save. This save-then-refresh sequence is specifically called out in WordPress.com’s preview instructions.
A teammate cannot open the normal preview
The person may not have the required site account or capability, or the post may still be private or otherwise restricted. Keep the post unpublished and either give the teammate the appropriate WordPress access or create a temporary Public Post Preview link for an outside reviewer.
The anonymous link no longer works
Public Post Preview links are time-limited. The plugin’s listing says the default nonce lifetime is 48 hours. Enable a new preview link from the saved post’s document settings and send the replacement URL.
The page looks different from the editor
This is expected when the theme supplies the surrounding layout, typography, metadata or navigation. Use Preview in new tab for the theme-level decision, and use the responsive canvas for quick width experiments. Check that you are previewing the same saved revision you edited.

Can a preview prove that a post is ready to publish?
