If your WordPress editor shows an update but the live website does not, first confirm you saved or published the change and are checking the exact public URL. Then check caches in order: your browser, any WordPress cache plugin, your host or reverse proxy, and your CDN. If clearing those does not help, verify that you edited the right page or template and that changed files reached the right server location.
Check the edit and the exact page first
Start with the simplest possibilities before changing settings or disabling plugins. A draft, an unsaved edit, or a visit to a different URL can look like a cache problem.
- In WordPress, reopen the page, post, or template you changed. Confirm the change is present and saved; if it should be public, confirm it is published rather than left as a draft or scheduled.
- Open the precise public URL in a separate tab. Check the domain, path, and any trailing slash or query string. If you have separate staging and production sites, make sure the address belongs to the site you edited.
- Check the page while logged out as well as while logged in. A logged-in view can differ from what a normal visitor receives.
WordPress’s documentation identifies browser caching, server-side caching, cache plugins, reverse proxies, editing the wrong location, and a changed file not being uploaded as common explanations. WordPress itself does not include a cache by default; a plugin or hosting environment may add one.
Clear caches one layer at a time
A cached copy can exist at more than one point between WordPress and your browser. Work from the narrowest, easiest-to-reverse step toward caches that affect more visitors. After each purge, reload the same public URL in a private window so you can tell whether that step made a difference.

Browser cache
A normal refresh may reuse stored files or page data. A private window is a quick way to see whether the usual browser session is involved; a hard refresh asks the browser to reload rather than simply reuse its normal cached copy. The exact hard-refresh keys differ by browser and operating system. If the private-window page is current but the normal window is stale, clear that browser’s cached data or continue using the private window while you investigate the browser-specific issue.
WordPress plugin cache
Look for a cache or performance plugin in the Plugins list or the WordPress admin toolbar. If one is active, use its own purge control rather than guessing at plugin settings. Clearing a plugin cache is generally less disruptive than changing theme or plugin configuration. If you do not have an obvious purge option, check the plugin’s documentation or ask the site administrator before removing or reconfiguring it.
Host, reverse-proxy, and CDN caches
Some hosts provide server-side caching or a reverse proxy, and some sites put a CDN in front of the host. Those layers can continue serving an older page or asset after a browser refresh or plugin purge. Use the host’s or CDN’s documented invalidation control when that layer is present. If you are unsure which services the site uses, check its hosting account and ask the person responsible for its DNS, hosting, or CDN setup rather than purging unrelated services.
Do not clear every cache repeatedly without checking the result. A page-specific purge, where available, narrows the change; a broad purge can make more visitors request uncached content at once. Once the public page is current in a private window, stop purging and move on to the next layer only if the stale result remains.

Make sure you changed what generates that public page
WordPress pages can be assembled from content, theme templates, and site settings. A correct edit in the wrong place will not change the URL you are viewing.
- Confirm the page or post: Compare the public URL with the page or post you edited, including its slug and publication status.
- Check the template: If you changed a theme template or template part, verify that the public page actually uses it. A page builder, a different template, or a site editor layout may control the output instead.
- Check the homepage selection: In the WordPress dashboard, go to Settings > Reading and confirm which page is selected as the homepage. Updating a page that is not selected will not update the front page.
- Check the site and URL: Make sure you edited the same WordPress installation, domain, and environment that serves the public URL, especially if staging or multiple installations are involved.
If the problem is that a URL routes incorrectly or stops resolving after a change, inspect Settings > Permalinks. Rewrite configuration can matter for URL routing. This is a routing check, not a general cache purge: do not change permalink structures casually, because that can alter existing URLs.
Verify changed theme or plugin files reached the right place
If the update involved code or an uploaded file, check that the new file is actually on the server and that it is in the directory used by the active theme or plugin. A local file changing on your computer does not itself update the production site. Compare the deployed file and path with the version you intended to upload.
Before replacing a server file, make a backup and verify the destination path. Replacing the wrong file can break the site or overwrite a working change. Use your hosting file manager, FTP, or deployment process only if you have the required access and know which installation and active theme or plugin are involved. If you are uncertain, ask the site administrator or developer to verify the deployment.

After a WordPress upgrade, a leftover .maintenance file can also interfere with normal site behavior. The WordPress developer documentation describes this possibility. Investigate it only when the symptom fits an incomplete or stuck upgrade; do not delete server files blindly, and make a backup or get administrator help first.
When CSS or JavaScript still looks old
When the page text updates but styling or behavior does not, focus on the stylesheet or script rather than repeatedly editing page content. The browser may still have the previous asset, or WordPress may be serving an unchanged asset URL.
For styles and scripts registered with WordPress enqueue functions, a version argument can append a query string to the asset URL. Updating that version when the file changes gives the browser a new URL to request. For example, a theme can use a version value that changes with the theme release or asset revision. Do not add a version parameter to the page URL and assume it versions every CSS or JavaScript file; the version must be attached to the enqueued asset.
After updating the asset version, clear the relevant plugin, host, or CDN cache if that layer caches static files, then inspect the public page again. If only one browser remains stale, investigate its cached assets separately.

If cache clearing does not fix it
Only move to conflict isolation after confirming the URL, publication status, page or template, and relevant cache layers. A WordPress support response recommends checking plugin, server, and CDN caches, testing in a private window, confirming the homepage selection, and then considering plugin or theme conflicts. This is practical community guidance, not a guarantee that every stale-page problem has the same cause.
- Record the affected URL, what should have changed, and what you actually see. Note whether the issue occurs in a private window and for logged-out visitors.
- Temporarily deactivate plugins only if you can safely do so, ideally on a staging copy. If the page updates, reactivate plugins methodically to identify a conflict.
- If plugins are not the cause, test with a default theme on staging where possible. A theme switch can change the site’s appearance and behavior, so do not do this casually on a live site.
- Restore the original components after each test and confirm the site works as expected.

Reduce repeat incidents
- After publishing, check the public URL in a private window so the editor preview is not your only confirmation.
- Know which cache layers your site actually uses and where their purge controls are. Record the steps for the next person who publishes.
- Use a deployment process that confirms the correct theme or plugin file reached the correct installation.
- For enqueued CSS and JavaScript, use a version value that changes when the asset changes, and include that version update in the release process.
- Use staging for plugin and theme conflict tests, and keep a backup before replacing files or making broad configuration changes.
