Use Playwright to open your running Remix site in a real browser, then call page.screenshot(). Remix serves the route; Playwright renders it and captures the pixels. For a visible-viewport image, save the screenshot without extra options; use fullPage: true for the whole scrollable document or a locator screenshot for one component.
How the screenshot workflow fits with Remix
A screenshot shows a page as a browser rendered it, not the source of a Remix route. In this workflow, Remix handles the application URL and its route response, while Playwright controls Chromium, navigates to the URL, and captures the rendered page. Remix routes and controllers work with standard Web Response objects; the Remix documentation does not describe screenshot capture as a built-in feature. Before following framework-specific setup advice, check which generation you use: the Remix documentation landing page directs developers to React Router v7 documentation for the latest framework features. The browser capture steps below are centered on Playwright’s page API; verify setup against your pinned Playwright version, package manager, and runtime because compatibility across every deployment and CI environment is not established here. Capture a screenshot with Playwright
Start your Remix application using its usual development or production command, then point Playwright at the URL where it is reachable. The example assumes the app is available at http://localhost:3000; replace that address with your actual local, staging, or production URL.

Install and run
Install Playwright using the package manager and browser setup appropriate to your project, following the current Playwright installation guide. Playwright’s installation guide does not establish one universal install command for every package manager and environment, so avoid copying a command that may not match your project. Save this as screenshot.mjs and run it with Node in an environment where the app is running and Playwright’s Chromium browser is available:

}The script writes screenshot.png to its current working directory. The finally block closes the browser even if navigation or capture fails. For a particular Remix route, put its path in the URL—for example, http://localhost:3000/products/item—and ensure that route loads in the browser before capturing it.
Wait for the page state you need
page.goto() navigates to the URL, but pages with client-side rendering, delayed content, or animations may need an explicit wait before the capture. If the page has a stable element that signals readiness, wait for it using Playwright’s locator API before taking the screenshot:

Choose what to capture and how to save it
Playwright supports viewport screenshots, full-page captures, element screenshots, and image bytes returned to your code. Its screenshot API supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP, and offers a scale setting for CSS-pixel or device-pixel output. See the Playwright screenshot documentation.

Viewport versus full page
Use the default screenshot when you need only what is currently visible in the browser window. Set fullPage: true when the output should include content beyond the fold. Full-page capture changes the scope of the image; it does not mean the result is a set of separately paginated screenshots.

Capture a component
Use a locator when the subject is one card, chart, header, or other element. Replace .target with a selector that identifies the element in your rendered page:

await page.locator(".target").screenshot({ path: "component.png" });If the selector matches no visible element, capture cannot produce the intended component image. Check the selector against the actual rendered DOM and wait for the element if it appears asynchronously.

Without a path, page.screenshot() returns bytes for further processing. You can also choose an output format and scale; use Playwright’s API documentation for the exact options supported by your installed version. CSS-pixel scale can keep output smaller on high-density screens, while device-pixel scale captures higher-resolution output. PNG, JPEG, and WebP are supported by the screenshot API. When to return a screenshot from a Remix route
If users or another service need to request an image from a Remix URL, that is a separate server-side capture-and-response design—not a screenshot feature supplied automatically by the route. The route layer can return a standard Web response, but browser automation still has to run somewhere suitable to load the target page and capture it. Consider where the browser process will execute, how its resources and lifecycle are managed, and how the resulting bytes are returned. No universal deployment recipe or compatibility matrix for this arrangement is published. See the Remix route documentation.
For visual regression testing, distinguish the image-generation step from the test assertion. A screenshot is an artifact; a test workflow must separately decide what to compare, how to handle expected changes, and where to run the browser. Do not assume that taking an image by itself verifies correctness.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
- The browser cannot reach the page: Confirm the Remix app is running at the URL in
page.goto(), the port is correct, and the browser process can access that host. A localhost URL inside a container refers to that container, not necessarily your host machine. - The screenshot is blank or incomplete: Check that navigation reaches the intended route and that the page’s important content has rendered before capture. Wait for a meaningful selector when the content loads asynchronously.
- The full-page image omits expected content: Confirm you passed
fullPage: trueand that the content is actually part of the scrollable document. Content that appears only after interaction or delayed loading may need those actions or waits before capture. - The element screenshot fails or misses the target: Verify the CSS selector against the rendered page, wait for the element to appear, and ensure it is visible and in the state you want to capture.
- The output is not saved where expected: A relative
pathis resolved from the process’s working directory. Use an absolute path or check that directory and its write permissions. - Browser launch fails in CI or deployment: Confirm the target environment has the browser binaries and runtime dependencies required by your Playwright setup. Installation and compatibility vary by environment; follow the current Playwright guidance for that runtime rather than assuming a local setup transfers unchanged.
- Image resolution or file size is wrong for the use: Choose a supported output format and scale deliberately. CSS-pixel scale favors a smaller result on high-density displays; device-pixel scale produces higher-resolution output.
