Choose the operating model first
Self-hosting is not one installation method. A personal archive on one machine has different operational needs from a shared service exposed to a team or the internet.

What a capture system can and cannot preserve
ArchiveBox says it saves websites, bookmarks, RSS feeds, social posts, media, source code, and research material in durable formats including HTML, PDF, PNG, TXT, JSON, WARC, MP4, and SQLite (ArchiveBox project site). Those outputs are complementary, not interchangeable. A PDF may preserve pagination while omitting interactive behavior; a screenshot records appearance but not a working application; WARC is useful for replay workflows but does not guarantee that every third-party service will function later.
JavaScript applications, authenticated content, video streams, robots controls, rate limits, bot checks, consent dialogs, and resources loaded after capture can all affect the result. Treat every saved representation as evidence of what the crawler could access under its configured identity and timing—not as a promise that the original site is perfectly reproduced.
Single-host setup with ArchiveBox
ArchiveBox documents Docker Compose as its recommended easy setup. The broad workflow is deliberately simple: install Docker, create a persistent collection directory, obtain the current Compose configuration, start the service, complete initial administration, and add URLs. Follow the repository’s current instructions for exact commands, image tags, ports, and security settings: ArchiveBox setup and repository.
1. Prepare a persistent location
Choose a directory on a disk that is backed up and has room for generated files. Do not place the collection in a disposable container layer. The directory is the durable boundary for your archive, so document its path and include it in your backup plan.
2. Start the Compose service
The repository shows the Compose startup pattern:
docker compose up -d --waitRun it from the directory containing the documented Compose file. The --wait option asks Docker Compose to wait for services to become ready where health checks are defined. If your installed Compose version or the project file differs, use the command specified by the current repository instructions.

3. Complete first-run administration
Open the local address and follow the documented initial-admin flow. If you publish the interface beyond localhost, put it behind your normal authentication and TLS controls before inviting users. A private collection should remain reachable only through your trusted network or VPN unless you have a deliberate remote-access design.
4. Add a URL from the CLI
The repository documents a CLI command for adding a URL. Use the exact syntax from the version you installed; a typical workflow is to execute the project’s command inside the running container and pass the target URL. Confirm that the resulting entry appears in the web interface and that files are written beneath the persistent collection directory.
5. Verify the outputs you need
Open the saved HTML, image, PDF, or other formats generated by your configuration. Keep a test URL that represents your real workload: a static article, a JavaScript-heavy page, an authenticated page if permitted, and a page with lazy-loaded images. A successful container start proves only that the service is running; it does not prove that every capture method works for your targets.
Kubernetes-oriented deployment with Browsertrix
Browsertrix describes itself as “a cloud-native application running in Kubernetes.” Its self-hosting overview lists a Kubernetes cluster and Helm 3 among the main requirements and provides separate local, production self-hosted, and cloud material: Browsertrix self-hosting documentation.
What you must provide
- A functioning Kubernetes cluster and the permissions needed to create the documented resources.
- Helm 3 for installing and upgrading the application.
- A storage and database plan appropriate to your retention and concurrency requirements.
- Ingress, DNS, TLS, and identity controls if people will access the service remotely.
Do not treat Browsertrix as a one-command Docker application. Start with the local deployment instructions to learn the components, then use the production guidance for networking, secrets, persistence, and upgrades. Keep chart values in version control, but remove credentials and other secrets from public repositories.

Remote and production storage
The remote deployment guide says production installations can use an external MongoDB server and/or external S3-compatible storage instead of the bundled MinIO option. It also requires a designed domain and strongly recommends a second domain for signing web archives. Read the domain and proxy requirements before selecting DNS names: Browsertrix remote and cloud deployment.
The same documentation lists tested Ansible environments including DigitalOcean, MicroK8s, and k3s. Those examples are documented deployment options, not a complete cloud-provider comparison or a guarantee that another provider will behave identically.

Separate application state from archive data
For ArchiveBox, protect the persistent collection directory. For Browsertrix, map every persistent volume and external service in your architecture diagram, including MongoDB, object storage, signing domains, and any queue or cache components described by your release. A database backup without the corresponding archive objects is incomplete, and copied objects without the metadata needed to index them may be difficult to use.
Define retention and capacity rules
- Decide whether captures are one-time records, periodic snapshots, or both.
- Set a retention period for large media and duplicate versions.
- Track free disk or object-storage capacity and alert before writes fail.
- Test restoring a small archive into an isolated instance, not just creating backups.
Plan for replay differences
Replay can depend on browser versions, fonts, certificates, embedded services, and network access that change over time. Preserve the original capture artifacts and record the capture date, URL, account or profile used, and relevant configuration. Keep an immutable or offline copy when the archive has evidentiary or research value.
Security and maintenance
Any internet-facing archive is a high-value store of URLs, credentials, private captures, and potentially malicious content. Restrict administration, use TLS and strong authentication, isolate crawler workloads where practical, and avoid granting broad shell or cluster permissions to routine operators. These are general operational safeguards; neither product’s cited setup page is a complete hardening recipe.

Browsertrix version advisory
Browsertrix currently documents a vulnerability affecting versions >=v1.15.0 and <v1.22.8 that can allow users with crawler permissions to access all data on an instance. The documentation advises upgrading to v1.22.8 or later and recommends Browsertrix Crawler v1.13.0 or later where an older crawler is pinned. Check the current advisory and your installed versions immediately before deployment and during every upgrade.

Upgrade procedure
- Read the release notes and security advisories for the exact application, chart, image, and crawler versions you run.
- Back up the collection, database, and object storage metadata.
- Test the upgrade in a disposable namespace or host when possible.
- Apply the vendor-documented upgrade command or chart change.
- Run a representative capture and replay test, then verify authentication, storage writes, and logs.
Common failure modes and fixes
The container starts but the page is empty
Check the target’s JavaScript requirements, redirects, authentication, and network access from inside the container. Try a static page to separate application configuration from target-specific behavior. Increase wait conditions only after confirming that the page eventually renders; an indefinite wait can turn a rendering problem into a timeout.
Lazy images or media are missing
Use a capture method that scrolls or otherwise triggers lazy loading, and verify that outbound requests are allowed. Some media is protected, personalized, or streamed in a way that a saved HTML file cannot reproduce.
Storage fills unexpectedly
Inspect which formats and media are consuming space, then reduce retention or disable outputs you do not need. Do not delete files manually from an indexed collection unless the product documentation describes that workflow; remove entries through supported tools and test the result.
Remote users cannot sign or replay archives
Validate DNS, TLS, ingress headers, and the designed-domain configuration. For Browsertrix, review the second-domain signing recommendation and external storage settings in the remote guide.

Compare image, chart, browser, and crawler versions with the release notes. Restore the tested backup or roll back using the documented procedure, then reproduce the failure with one representative URL before trying another upgrade.
