For most request-driven screenshot or PDF endpoints, start with the standard environment: its Node.js runtime includes the system packages needed for Headless Chrome. Choose the flexible environment if you need a customized runtime, additional OS packages, writable disk, or more control over machine resources.
Choose the App Engine environment first
Both App Engine environments can host Node.js applications, but they suit different Puppeteer workloads. The standard environment offers a managed runtime, scale-to-zero behavior, and a free tier; its runtime image is not customizable. Flexible runs in Docker containers on Compute Engine virtual machines, supports custom machine types and runtime customization, and has no free tier. Google’s comparison also describes flexible as keeping minimum instances running and taking longer to deploy. See Google’s App Engine environment comparison and the flexible environment documentation.
| Need | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary request-based automation using the packages in the managed Node.js runtime | Standard | Headless Chrome’s required system packages are included; the environment can scale to zero. |
| Custom OS libraries, writable local disk, multiple processes, or more control over CPU and memory | Flexible or a custom runtime | Container and VM-level customization makes it possible to add dependencies and configure machine resources. |
| Lowest operational overhead for a small service | Usually standard | It avoids managing a custom runtime image, but its sandbox and resource constraints still apply. |
Google describes standard as a lightweight sandbox with restricted binaries, no writable disk, and constrained CPU and memory. Flexible permits arbitrary libraries, disk writes, multiple processes, and configurable machine resources. These are environment capabilities, not a promise that every workload will perform better on flexible; test your own pages, concurrency, and request duration.
Prepare Puppeteer and its browser download
Puppeteer automates Chrome and Firefox, using the Chrome DevTools Protocol and WebDriver BiDi. Common uses include screenshots, PDF generation, page navigation, form interaction, testing, and performance analysis. The puppeteer package normally downloads Chrome for Testing and chrome-headless-shell during installation.

Install it as an application dependency rather than relying on a globally installed package:
npm install puppeteer express
At the application root, add .puppeteerrc.js to put Puppeteer’s browser cache beneath node_modules:
import {join} from 'path';
/** @type {import("puppeteer").Configuration} */
export default {
cacheDirectory: join(import.meta.dirname, 'node_modules', '.puppeteer_cache'),
};
This location works with App Engine’s dependency caching and helps avoid a deployment where a cached dependency directory exists but the browser executable expected by Puppeteer is missing. Use a Node.js version that supports the configuration syntax in your project, and keep the project’s module format consistent: the sample uses ES modules.
Install scripts matter. If your package manager or build policy blocks dependency lifecycle scripts, Puppeteer’s browser download may be skipped even though the npm package is present. Allow the Puppeteer install script according to your package manager’s policy, or run npx puppeteer browsers install during the build. The Puppeteer troubleshooting documentation explains browser installation and executable discovery: Puppeteer configuration.

Create an App Engine service
App Engine’s Node.js runtime starts node server.js by default, or runs the start script in package.json. Your HTTP server must bind to 0.0.0.0 and use the port provided in process.env.PORT; do not hard-code a port as the only listening port. See Google’s Node.js standard runtime documentation.
For example, use this package.json configuration, adjusting the Node.js major version to one currently supported by App Engine:

"dependencies": {

The version strings above illustrate the package structure, not a recommendation to deploy those particular package releases. Use compatible versions resolved and tested in your application, and check Google’s current runtime list before choosing the Node.js major version.
Add an app.yaml at the application root, with a supported runtime value:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Replace the suffix with a Node.js major version supported by App Engine at deployment time. Pinning the runtime makes upgrades an explicit application change rather than an accidental consequence of deployment defaults.
Build a minimal screenshot endpoint
This Express example accepts a URL through a query parameter and returns a PNG. It is an implementation pattern, not a claim that this exact application has been deployed or load-tested.
import express from 'express';
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const app = express();
app.get('/screenshot', async (req, res) => {
const target = req.query.url;
if (typeof target !== 'string') {
return res.status(400).send('Provide one url query parameter.');
}
let browser;
try {
browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto(target, {
waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
timeout: 30000,
});
const image = await page.screenshot({ type: 'png' });
res.type('png').send(image);
} catch (error) {
console.error('Screenshot failed:', error);
if (!res.headersSent) {
res.status(500).send('Screenshot capture failed.');
}
} finally {
if (browser) await browser.close();
}
});
app.listen(process.env.PORT || 8080, '0.0.0.0');
The navigation timeout is an example application-level limit, not an App Engine guarantee. Choose a timeout appropriate to your service’s request budget and the pages you capture. The endpoint is intentionally minimal: in a production service, validate and restrict target URLs, set concurrency limits, and define how callers authenticate before exposing it publicly.
To generate a PDF instead, use Puppeteer’s page PDF method and return an appropriate PDF content type:

Deploy and verify the service
- Confirm
package.json,.puppeteerrc.js,app.yaml, andserver.jsare at the application root. - Check that the Node.js major version in
app.yamland, if used,package.json’senginesfield is supported by App Engine. - Run the application locally and verify that the Puppeteer browser installation completes and the screenshot endpoint returns a PNG.
- Deploy from the application directory with
gcloud app deploy. - Inspect the deployment build logs for a skipped install script, failed browser download, or other dependency installation error.
- Call the deployed service’s
/screenshotroute with a URL parameter and check both the HTTP response and application logs.
If the browser launches locally but not after deployment, compare the deployment’s dependency-install logs and runtime configuration before changing executable paths. Standard already supplies the system packages required for Headless Chrome; an assumed local Chrome path is not a substitute for correctly installing Puppeteer’s browser.
Manage browser resources and service limits
Launching a new browser for every request is easy to understand, but browser processes use resources. For sustained traffic, consider reusing a browser process carefully, closing each page after its work, and limiting concurrent captures. These are engineering practices inferred from browser resource use and App Engine’s sandbox constraints, not benchmarked performance claims.
- Keep concurrency bounded. A burst of simultaneous captures can multiply memory and CPU demand. Set an application-level queue or limit appropriate to the selected environment.
- Close resources on every path. Use
try/finallyaround browser and page work so failed navigation does not leave processes or pages open. - Keep request work within operational limits. Browser navigation and rendering can be unpredictable; decide when to time out, retry, or move long work into an asynchronous design.
- Do not depend on local persistence in standard. Its filesystem is not a writable persistent disk. Store results in an appropriate external service if they must survive a request or instance lifecycle.
- Account for environment economics. Standard can scale to zero and has a free tier; flexible has no free tier and keeps minimum instances running. Actual cost depends on configuration and usage, so consult current Google Cloud pricing for your deployment.
Troubleshoot common Puppeteer-on-App-Engine failures
“Could not find Chrome” or browser executable missing
Cause: The package was installed but its browser download did not run, commonly because dependency install scripts were blocked, or the browser cache was not present in the deployed artifact.
Fix: Check build logs, permit Puppeteer’s install script under your package manager’s policy, or run npx puppeteer browsers install during the build. Keep the configured cache directory under node_modules. Puppeteer’s browser management guide describes installation behavior: Puppeteer browsers API and installation.
Server starts locally but App Engine reports that it is not listening
Cause: The application bound only to localhost or listened on a fixed port instead of App Engine’s assigned port.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Fix: Start the HTTP server with app.listen(process.env.PORT || 8080, '0.0.0.0').
Works on a laptop but fails in standard with a missing library or restricted operation
Cause: The local machine may have OS packages, writable paths, or permissions that the standard sandbox does not provide. Standard’s runtime image is managed and not customizable.
Recommended Free Tools
Fix: First check whether the operation can use the managed runtime’s supported packages and filesystem. If the application genuinely needs additional system libraries, writable local disk, multiple processes, or a customized base image, assess flexible or a custom runtime instead.
Navigation times out or never reaches the selected wait condition
Cause: A page may keep network connections open or load slowly, so a network-idle condition may not occur within the request’s limit.
Fix: Choose a navigation wait condition suited to the page, set an intentional timeout, and handle timeout errors explicitly. Do not treat a timeout as proof that the destination is permanently unavailable.
Captures fail under traffic but succeed one at a time
Cause: Concurrent browser and page work can exceed the resources available to an instance.
