Screenshots support a listing; they do not guarantee acceptance, ranking, traffic, or SEO gains.
What screenshots do I need to submit my website to a directory?
There is no universal screenshot standard. The destination’s current form controls the answer. Before capturing, record:
- Maximum number of images.
- Accepted formats such as PNG, JPEG or WebP.
- Maximum file size per image.
- Required width, height, device family or aspect ratio.
- Whether full-page images, product screens, mobile views or only selected features are allowed.
- Rules about text, branding, promotional claims and sensitive information shown in the image.
ToolDirs, for example, allows up to four screenshots and says each file must be under 5 MB. Microsoft’s PWA Store process has separate count, format, size and device-dimension requirements, including one screenshot per device family. These examples are not a common industry standard; recheck the destination immediately before upload.
Match the listing policy, not just the image rule
A screenshot cannot fix a noncompliant listing. The Web Directory’s rules require the official website or company name as the title and prohibit promotional wording, URLs in descriptions, broken links and under-construction sites. Other directories may use different wording, so treat each policy as authoritative.

Build a reusable submission kit
Prepare stable source material once, while keeping destination-specific variants separate. A practical kit contains:
- Canonical website URL and, where useful, a deep link to the page shown.
- Approved title and short-description variants.
- Logo in the formats the directory accepts.
- Pricing details or plan summary when the form asks for them.
- Original screenshots and exported versions for known limits.
- A tracker containing directory name, requirements, submission date, status, reviewer response and published listing URL.
Keep an untouched master image for each page and derive smaller or differently cropped files from it. Name files descriptively, for example product-dashboard-desktop.webp and product-dashboard-mobile.png. Never place passwords, private customer data, unpublished features or browser address-bar information in an image unless the directory specifically requires it.
How to take screenshots for each directory
- Read the current destination form. Copy its limits into your tracker instead of relying on an old checklist.
- Choose the page state. Decide whether the image should show the home page, dashboard, pricing, a workflow or a mobile layout. Use a real, loaded state rather than a skeleton screen.
- Capture at the required viewport. Set the exact device dimensions where specified; otherwise choose a size that keeps important interface text legible.
- Wait for content. Wait for a meaningful selector, network idle or a short delay for fonts and lazy images. Avoid capturing cookie dialogs, newsletter popups or chat widgets unless they are the feature being submitted.
- Export and validate. Check pixel dimensions, format, file size, readability and that the image shows the intended URL and state.
- Adapt, do not blindly reuse. Crop or resize a derivative for each directory’s aspect ratio and count limit. Keep the master unchanged.
- Submit and track. Save the exact files used, record the date and follow the directory’s review and update rules.

await browser.close();For a stable capture, add a selector wait for the page’s real content, dismiss a consent dialog only when appropriate, and mask or hide dynamic elements. Full-page images can become extremely tall; use them only when the directory accepts that shape. For a form requiring a fixed ratio, capture the viewport and create a checked derivative instead.

- URL resolves without a broken-link or under-construction state.
- Required page content is visible and readable at the submitted dimensions.
- No accidental consent banner, popup, chat bubble or loading spinner obscures the product.
- Image count, format, dimensions and file size match the destination form.
- Title and description follow that directory’s editorial rules.
- Each image is an accurate representation of the current site.
- Tracker records the submitted files, date and listing URL.
Troubleshooting
The screenshot is blank or incomplete
Wait for a meaningful selector, increase the timeout, and verify that the URL does not require an unavailable login. Lazy images may need scrolling or a longer wait. Should I submit one long full-page image everywhere?
No. Use full-page capture only when the destination accepts it; otherwise provide viewport images at its required dimensions or ratio.
