There is no universal best PDF generator API in 2026. The right choice depends on your input model (raw HTML, URL, or data-filled template), CSS and JavaScript requirements, rendering fidelity, job volume, latency, data-handling rules, and whether you want to operate infrastructure yourself. DocRaptor and PDFMonkey are credible managed candidates for different workflows; a self-hosted engine such as Gotenberg may fit teams that need infrastructure ownership. Test your own representative documents before committing.
Start with the decision that matters: managed API or self-hosted renderer?
A hosted API removes browser and rendering infrastructure from your team. The provider operates workers, capacity, upgrades, retries and (depending on its design) file delivery. You pay for a service and must verify its retention, regional processing, access controls and deletion behavior.
A self-hosted engine keeps processing inside infrastructure you control. That can help with network isolation, predictable deployment and internal data policies, but your team must provision capacity, monitor failures, patch the renderer, manage fonts and browsers, and design job queues and retries. A 2026 comparison identifies Gotenberg as an open-source, self-hosted option; confirm compatibility and maintenance details in Gotenberg’s current official documentation before production use.
Compare APIs against the same workload
Do not accept a ranking as a benchmark. Build a small corpus containing your longest document, dense tables, charts, web fonts, images, page-break rules, headers and footers, right-to-left or non-Latin text if you need it, and pages whose layout depends on JavaScript. Submit identical HTML and data where possible, then inspect:

DocRaptor: HTML-first rendering with Prince
DocRaptor’s documentation says its API accepts either document_content or document_url and converts HTML to PDF with Prince. It documents pipeline versions, print and screen media, JavaScript controls, PDF profiles, encryption and other PDF-specific settings. DocRaptor describes Prince as an “industry-leading” engine; that wording is the vendor’s promotion, not an independent benchmark.
When DocRaptor is a good candidate
- Your source is already complete HTML or a reachable URL.
- You need print-oriented controls such as page size, profiles, encryption and detailed CSS pagination.
- You prefer a managed service rather than operating a renderer.
Important JavaScript detail
DocRaptor documents separate JavaScript options and notes that JavaScript is disabled by default. Decide explicitly whether scripts must run, and how the service should know that delayed content is ready. A document that looks correct in a browser can otherwise produce an incomplete PDF.
Request lifecycle
The API overview documents API-key authentication and POST generation. Depending on request options, a successful response can be PDF binary, a hosted URL or an asynchronous status identifier. Design your client to handle each mode, verify content type, and treat a status identifier as a job that still needs polling or retrieval.
Price signal
DocRaptor’s vendor page (accessed September 29, 2026) states that pricing starts at $15 per month. It is a time-sensitive vendor-published figure, not an independently verified market comparison. Confirm current quotas, overages and retention before purchase.

PDFMonkey: template and pass-through workflows
PDFMonkey’s HTML-to-PDF guide describes a template-based model. For ordinary use, you maintain a template in PDFMonkey and pass structured data into it. The same documentation describes a pass-through approach for supplied HTML when an existing page must be rendered; the guide recommends ordinary code templates when the layout is maintained in PDFMonkey.
When PDFMonkey is a good candidate
- Your application naturally produces structured data for reusable document templates.
- You want designers or developers to maintain layouts separately from application code.
- You need HTML, CSS, JavaScript, external fonts, images or charts as described on the vendor’s pricing page.
Asynchronous by default
PDFMonkey’s API guide describes an asynchronous default workflow. Submit a generation request, poll its status or receive a webhook, then retrieve the resulting file according to the service’s documented response. Webhooks require an authenticated endpoint, signature verification if offered, idempotent processing and a fallback poller for missed deliveries.
Dated pricing example
PDFMonkey’s pricing page, last updated September 2026, lists a free tier of 20 documents per month, a Starter plan at €5 per month and a Pro plan at €15 per month. The page says prices exclude VAT and taxes. These are vendor figures for that date; check the live page immediately before budgeting, including quota and overage behavior.
Input model: HTML, URL or data template?
| Requirement | Prefer | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Existing server-rendered page | HTML/URL API such as DocRaptor | Minimal transformation; preserve your current markup and print CSS. |
| Many document types sharing a layout | Template-oriented workflow such as PDFMonkey | Send structured data and reuse a maintained template. |
| Strict internal infrastructure control | Self-hosted renderer | You own network placement and operations, at the cost of maintenance. |
| Browser-like pages with consent overlays | A capture service with cleanup controls | Cookie banners and widgets can otherwise contaminate output. |
JavaScript, CSS and asset edge cases
JavaScript readiness
Identify every script that changes visible output: charts, hydration, client-side tables and asynchronous data. Use a provider’s documented wait or completion mechanism; a fixed delay is less reliable than waiting for a selector or explicit application signal. If scripts are disabled by default, enable them deliberately and assess the security implications of loading untrusted pages.

Fonts and external resources
Pin font files and image URLs where possible. Check authentication, redirects, TLS certificates and robots or firewall rules that could prevent a renderer from fetching assets. A PDF can succeed while silently falling back to a different font or omitting an image.
Pagination
Test tables that span pages, keep-together rules, repeated headers, footnotes, landscape sections and invoices with variable line counts. Browser screen layouts are not proof of print correctness.
Operational design for production
Synchronous versus asynchronous jobs
Use synchronous generation only when the document is small and the request can safely fit your user-facing timeout. For larger documents, submit a job, persist its identifier, poll with backoff or consume a webhook, and make completion handling idempotent.
Retries and duplicate prevention
Retry network failures and documented transient server errors, not authentication or validation failures. Attach your own idempotency key where supported; otherwise store a hash of the input and avoid creating duplicate jobs during client retries.

Common failure modes and fixes
Blank or incomplete PDF
Check JavaScript settings, wait conditions, blocked assets and authentication. Capture a diagnostic page or log the renderer’s status before changing CSS.
Missing fonts or images
Verify that every asset is reachable from the renderer’s network, does not require an expired token, and is served with a usable content type. Bundle critical fonts when policy permits.
Timeouts
Reduce unnecessary third-party requests, wait for a specific readiness condition instead of an excessive delay, and move large jobs to asynchronous processing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a PDF API the same as a browser screenshot API?
No. A PDF API may render templates or HTML for paginated print output, while a screenshot-oriented service captures a browser view and can also expose PDF output. Choose based on whether print pagination or faithful page capture is the primary requirement.
Should I use a template or pass complete HTML?
Use templates when layouts are reusable and data is structured. Pass complete HTML when your application already owns the markup and print CSS, provided the service supports that input model.
When is self-hosting justified?
Self-hosting is most defensible when network placement, data residency or infrastructure ownership outweighs the operational cost of capacity management, upgrades, monitoring and renderer maintenance.
The Bottom Line
Shortlist by requirements, not by a universal ranking: DocRaptor for documented HTML/URL and Prince-based print controls, PDFMonkey for template-and-data workflows with asynchronous generation, and a self-hosted engine when your team accepts renderer operations. Validate the decision with your own documents and current vendor terms.
