In a cloud service, the same project matrix is executed by remote workers rather than by browsers installed on your CI host.
“Five browser engines” needs a precise qualification. Playwright has three independent bundled engines—Chromium, Firefox and WebKit. Chrome and Edge are Chromium-based branded channels, so this is a five-target compatibility matrix, not five independent rendering engines.
What the five-target matrix actually tests

Playwright’s project model is designed for this arrangement: keep test code shared and vary the browser, device profile, timeout, retries or environment variables in each project. A single command then schedules every project, while a focused rerun can target one project by name.
Prerequisites for local and cloud runs
- Node.js and a project with
@playwright/testinstalled. - A committed Playwright configuration file and tests that do not depend on one developer’s local state.
- Browser binaries matching the Playwright package for bundled Chromium, Firefox and WebKit.
- For the Chrome and Edge projects, an execution image that contains the corresponding branded browser channel.
- CI secrets and network access for the application under test and, when applicable, your cloud provider.
Keep the Playwright package and its browser bundles current together. Updating the package without installing its matching browsers is a common cause of launch failures.

Define all five projects in Playwright
Create playwright.config.ts (or the equivalent JavaScript file) with one project per target:

});The setup project is optional. It is useful for authentication or other one-time preparation. A dependent project waits for setup to finish, then the five browser projects can run in parallel. If you do not need shared preparation, remove the setup project and each dependencies entry.
Install the matching browsers

Branded Chrome and Edge channels still need to exist in the image used for the corresponding projects; availability is controlled by the local or cloud image, not by the channel string alone.

npx playwright testSet BASE_URL to the deployed preview or test environment instead of starting a local server. Keep the URL and credentials in CI secrets rather than committing them to the configuration.
Move execution to a cloud browser service
Cloud execution changes where the browser process runs, not how projects are defined. Your provider’s integration starts remote workers, transfers the test bundle, and collects artifacts. Check the provider’s current configuration syntax for credentials, worker counts and reporting; those details change more often than the Playwright project file.

Sauce Labs
Sauce Labs documents remote Playwright execution through its saucectl command-line tool. Its Playwright documentation ties supported Chromium, Firefox and WebKit builds to the Playwright release, which helps keep the cloud image aligned with your framework version. A typical workflow is to commit the provider configuration, authenticate with CI secrets, and invoke:
saucectl runUse the provider’s documented settings to select browsers, operating systems, parallel workers and artifact collection. Confirm that the selected image includes branded Chrome or Edge when those channels are part of your matrix; bundled WebKit is not the same thing as a macOS Safari binary.
BrowserStack
BrowserStack documents Playwright capabilities for playwright-chromium, playwright-firefox, playwright-webkit, branded chrome and branded edge. Its capability model lets you select browser versions and operating-system combinations and run combinations in parallel. Map your five local project names to the provider’s capability names, then keep the test command and assertions unchanged.

Understand the fidelity limits
WebKit is not branded Safari
Playwright’s WebKit build is derived from current WebKit main-branch sources. Branded Safari is unsupported. Treat WebKit results as a compatibility proxy. When media codecs, WebKit integrations or Safari-specific behavior matter, include a macOS WebKit environment in the cloud plan and document that distinction in the test report.

Firefox is Playwright-patched
The Playwright Firefox target is a patched build rather than the branded Firefox release. It is valuable for cross-engine coverage, but a passing result should not be described as proof that every branded Firefox version behaves identically.
Chrome and Edge are related targets
Both branded channels use Chromium under the hood. They are still useful because channel packaging, enterprise policies, codecs, launch flags and release timing can differ. Do not count them as independent rendering engines when reporting coverage.
Make the matrix reliable and fast
Control parallelism deliberately
Five projects multiplied by several workers can exhaust a provider’s concurrency allowance or overwhelm a shared test environment. Start with one worker per project, measure queue time and application capacity, then increase parallelism where it reduces wall-clock time without creating rate limits or data collisions.
Separate deterministic setup from test data
Use a setup project for reusable authentication state, but create isolated records for tests that run concurrently. A shared account, mutable cart or one-time token can make failures appear browser-specific when the real problem is data contention.
Collect diagnostics only when useful
trace: 'on-first-retry', failure screenshots and retained videos provide a practical default. Always-on video and network recording increase storage and transfer costs, so enable them for a targeted investigation when the normal artifacts are insufficient.
Pin, then upgrade
Lock the Playwright package in your package manager, install its matching browser bundles, and upgrade as a planned change. Record the provider image, Playwright version and project name with each CI run so a browser update can be correlated with a behavior change.

Troubleshoot common failures
“Executable doesn’t exist”
Cause: the bundled browser was not installed, or its version does not match the package. Fix: run npx playwright install locally or npx playwright install --with-deps in Linux CI, then verify the lockfile and cache key include the Playwright version.
Chrome or Edge channel cannot launch
Cause: the execution image lacks the branded browser, or the channel name is wrong. Fix: use channel: 'chrome' or channel: 'msedge', and select a local or cloud image that explicitly provides that channel. Do not substitute chromium and assume it tests branded Chrome.

Cause: a WebKit rendering, media or timing difference, or an assertion that assumes Chromium behavior. Fix: inspect the WebKit trace and screenshot, remove engine-specific assumptions, and decide whether the behavior requires a macOS environment rather than bundled WebKit.
Setup runs repeatedly or dependent projects are skipped
Cause: the setup file does not match testMatch, a dependency name differs from the project name, or setup failed. Fix: run the setup project alone with npx playwright test --project=setup, correct the pattern, and inspect its trace before rerunning dependents.
Cloud jobs time out in the queue
Cause: requested concurrency exceeds the plan’s available workers or the selected browser/OS combination is scarce. Fix: reduce workers, split pull-request smoke coverage from nightly full coverage, or choose a provider region and image with better availability.
Tests pass locally but fail remotely
Cause: different OS fonts, timezone, locale, viewport, network access, browser version or application seed data. Fix: make those settings explicit, log the project and environment, and reproduce with the same provider image before changing assertions.

FAQ
Can one command really run all five targets?
Yes. Once the five projects are defined, npx playwright test discovers and runs them. Use --project when you need a single-target rerun.

Does this prove compatibility with Safari on iPhone?
No. Bundled WebKit is a Safari approximation, and branded Safari is unsupported by Playwright. Add an appropriate macOS or real-device environment when Safari or mobile media behavior is a release requirement.
Should Chrome and Edge share the same project?
No. Keep separate projects so CI reports identify the branded channel that failed and so channel-specific launch settings can be changed independently.
Where should cloud credentials live?
Store them as CI secret variables or the provider’s secret-store integration. Never commit access keys to playwright.config, test fixtures or screenshots.

Can I run only the branded Edge check after a failure?
Yes. Run npx playwright test --project=edge; the project name is the selector, while the test code remains shared.
Is a cloud provider required to use five projects?
No. Projects work on a developer machine or self-hosted CI. A cloud provider adds remote operating systems, browsers, devices, concurrency and artifact infrastructure.
How should I describe coverage in release notes?
Call it a five-target matrix: Chromium, Playwright Firefox, Playwright WebKit, branded Chrome and branded Edge. Do not call it five independent rendering engines.
