For most Claude Code developers, start with GitHub, Filesystem, or Git: choose GitHub for remote repository work, Filesystem for tightly scoped access to project files, and Git for local repository operations. Add Fetch for web pages, PostgreSQL for database work, Slack for team context, Memory for persistent project knowledge, or Sequential Thinking for investigations that benefit from explicit decomposition. Install only the capabilities you need, and review permissions before enabling anything that can write or reach sensitive systems.

MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is an open protocol that standardizes how applications provide context to language models. In practice, MCP servers let a client such as Claude Code connect to tools and data sources. The eight recommendations below are grouped by the job they do best, not by a claim that one server is universally superior.

Which MCP server should you install first?

Begin with the server that removes the biggest current bottleneck, then add others only when a concrete workflow needs them. For source control, distinguish remote GitHub work from local Git operations; for local files, prefer narrow directory access over broad machine access. A server that can read data may still pose a risk if it can reach private networks or expose sensitive context.

  • Remote repositories, issues, and pull requests: GitHub MCP server.
  • Project files in selected local directories: Filesystem MCP server.
  • Local repository history and changes: Git MCP server.
  • Web retrieval: Fetch MCP server, with particular care around internal network access.
  • Database schemas and SQL workflows: PostgreSQL MCP server.
  • Team conversations and coordination: Slack MCP server.
  • Persistent project knowledge: Memory MCP server.
  • Complex, branching investigations: Sequential Thinking MCP server.

These servers do different jobs, so “best” depends on what Claude Code needs to access and what permissions you are prepared to grant. MCP can expose tools, prompts, and resources: tools are executable functions controlled by the model, while resources provide contextual data controlled by the application.

The 8 best MCP servers for Claude Code

Server Best for Access to consider
GitHub Remote repositories, issues, pull requests, file operations, and GitHub API workflows Repository scope, authentication, and which write operations to allow
Filesystem Controlled access to local project directories Allowed paths and whether writes are enabled
Git Reading, searching, and manipulating local Git repositories Repository scope and operations that can change local state
Fetch Retrieving web pages and converting HTML to Markdown URL scope and network reachability, including internal addresses
PostgreSQL Schema inspection and SQL access Database credentials, host reachability, and read/write scope
Slack Team context, channel search, and messaging workflows Workspace access, channel scope, and message permissions
Memory Persistent project knowledge represented as a knowledge graph What information is retained and who or what can access it
Sequential Thinking Complex investigations requiring decomposition, revision, branching, and hypothesis checks Whether an explicit step-by-step reasoning workflow fits the task

1. GitHub MCP server: remote repository work

Choose GitHub when the work involves repositories hosted on GitHub: managing repositories, working with files, issues, pull requests, or other GitHub API workflows. It is the natural option when Claude Code needs to act on remote project context rather than only inspect a checkout on your machine.

Before enabling it, decide which repositories and operations are necessary. Treat write access as a separate decision from read access: a workflow that only needs to inspect issues or pull requests does not automatically need permission to change them. Review how its authentication is configured in your environment and keep access aligned with the task.

2. Filesystem MCP server: selected local directories

Filesystem is the direct choice when Claude Code needs controlled access to files on the machine running the server. Its reference description emphasizes secure file operations with configurable access controls. The key configuration decision is the allowed-path list: expose the project directory or the specific files required, not an unnecessarily broad portion of the computer.

Check write permissions before turning the server on. A model that can read a project can inspect source and configuration; one that can write can also change or create files. Start with the smallest useful scope, and expand it only if a task genuinely requires more.

3. Git MCP server: local repository operations

Git is for reading, searching, and manipulating Git repositories. It complements rather than replaces GitHub: Git works with local repository state, while GitHub supports remote repository and GitHub API workflows. Use Git when a coding task depends on local history or repository operations, and use GitHub when it depends on hosted issues, pull requests, or remote project data.

Review any operation that changes repository state, and make sure the server is pointed at the intended checkout. Keep its scope narrow if you work with multiple repositories or sensitive local projects.

4. Fetch MCP server: web-page retrieval

Fetch retrieves web pages and converts their HTML into Markdown that a model can use. That makes it useful when an investigation depends on public documentation or other web content. It deserves more network review than a simple content description might suggest: its documentation warns that the server can access local or internal IP addresses, which may create a security risk.

Consider what destinations the server can reach from its host, not only which URLs a user intends to provide. If the environment can reach internal services, decide whether Fetch should run there at all and what restrictions are needed. Do not treat “fetch a URL” as synonymous with “fetch only public pages.”

Need a screenshot rather than page text?

Fetch is for retrieving page content; when a task needs a visual record of a web page, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server, with tools named take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients such as Claude and Cursor. It is purpose-built for screenshots and PDFs rather than a general replacement for Fetch.

One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL call saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe; replace the URL with the page you need and use your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies page verdict and billing status in its X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Learn about ScreenshotNeo, or sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

5. PostgreSQL MCP server: database context

Choose PostgreSQL when a coding task needs database schema inspection or SQL access from Claude Code. The official examples describe it as read-only database access with schema-inspection capabilities. That makes it a useful fit for understanding a schema or querying data without assuming the server should be allowed to change records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the database host, credentials, and access mode before connecting. Keep credentials out of project files or prompts, and check whether the server environment can reach more databases than the one required. If the task needs writes, verify the specific server and configuration support that safely rather than assuming it from the name.

6. Slack MCP server: team context

Slack is useful when development work depends on team conversations, channel search, or messaging workflows. It brings communication context into the coding workflow, which can help connect an implementation task with decisions or discussion that would otherwise be separated from the repository.

Make workspace and channel scope explicit. Search access and the ability to send or otherwise change messages are different levels of access; grant only what the workflow needs, and be deliberate about where model-accessible conversation history may be exposed.

7. Memory MCP server: persistent project knowledge

Memory represents persistent knowledge as a knowledge graph. It can suit recurring work where important project context should remain available across separate interactions rather than being rediscovered every time. Its value depends on the quality and appropriateness of what is retained.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide what belongs in persistent memory, how it should be updated, and who or what can access it. Avoid treating persistence as a reason to save secrets or transient details indiscriminately; retained context has a longer life than a one-off prompt.

8. Sequential Thinking MCP server: structured investigations

Sequential Thinking is intended for complex investigations that benefit from explicit decomposition, revision, branching, and hypothesis verification. Its package is published as @modelcontextprotocol/server-sequential-thinking. It may be useful when a debugging or analysis task has competing explanations that need to be examined systematically.

It is a workflow aid, not a substitute for evidence. Use it when the problem benefits from visible structured exploration, and verify conclusions against code, documentation, or observed behavior.

How to choose safely and connect servers

Compare more than task fit

For each candidate, check what data it touches, whether it reads or writes, whether that data is local or remote, how authentication works, and how narrowly paths or service scopes can be limited. Also consider who maintains the implementation and what network destinations the server can reach. These checks matter as much as whether the feature sounds useful.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be especially careful to distinguish official reference servers from integrations maintained by a vendor or another project. The official MCP repository describes its reference servers as educational examples intended to demonstrate MCP features and SDK usage, not production-ready solutions. Evaluate any implementation against your own security requirements and add safeguards before using it in production.

Start with a minimal setup

Official examples show TypeScript servers being run with npx and Python servers with uvx; their example configurations include Memory, Filesystem, and GitHub. The exact configuration fields depend on the server and the Claude Code setup you use, so consult the relevant server’s current instructions rather than copying a guessed configuration.

  1. Identify one concrete task, such as searching a GitHub issue or inspecting a project directory.
  2. Select the server that handles that task and confirm its maintainer and installation instructions.
  3. Configure only the necessary repository, directory, workspace, database, or network scope.
  4. Begin with read-only access where it is sufficient; separately review every write-capable operation.
  5. Test with a low-risk task, verify which data the server can reach, and remove access that is not needed.
  6. Add another server only when a distinct task calls for it, then repeat the scope and permission review.

Common problems and practical fixes

The server starts, but Claude Code cannot use its tools

Check that the client configuration names the intended server and that its launch command and environment are available in the environment where Claude Code starts. For a TypeScript example using npx or a Python example using uvx, confirm the relevant runtime or package runner is installed and that the package can be resolved. Use the server’s own current setup instructions for exact client-specific fields.

A local file or repository is missing

For Filesystem, check whether the requested path is among the allowed paths and whether the server process can access it. For Git, confirm the intended local repository is in scope and that it is a Git checkout. Do not solve a path mismatch by granting access to the whole machine unless that is genuinely required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A remote service cannot be reached

For GitHub, PostgreSQL, or Slack, verify credentials, required service access, and the network path from the server process. A valid login does not guarantee that the process can reach the relevant host or workspace. Check permissions at both the service and server configuration layers.

Fetch returns unexpected or sensitive content

Review the destination and the server host’s network reachability. Fetch may access local or internal IP addresses, so an unexpected result can reflect access to a network destination rather than a public page. Restrict reachable destinations or avoid running it in an environment with access to sensitive internal services.

A tool changes something you meant only to inspect

Separate read-only use from write access before enabling a server. Revisit the operation permissions and scope for GitHub, Git, Filesystem, or Slack, and use a lower-privilege configuration where possible. Do not assume a tool is harmless merely because the initial request sounds informational.

What MCP servers mean for production use

MCP standardizes how an application connects a model to tools and data, but it does not certify every server or configuration as safe for production. The client, server implementation, credentials, reachable systems, and granted operations all affect risk. The official reference servers are educational examples, so production use calls for independent review, least-privilege access, and safeguards appropriate to the data and actions involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an individual developer, a practical starting set is often one source-control server plus narrowly scoped Filesystem access. Add Fetch, PostgreSQL, Slack, Memory, or Sequential Thinking only when the workflow benefits from that distinct capability. Revisit permissions as projects and needs change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are MCP servers specific to Claude Code?

No. MCP is an open protocol for connecting language-model applications to tools and data; Claude Code is one client that can use MCP servers.

Is an MCP server the same thing as an MCP client?

No. The client is the application that connects to servers; an MCP server supplies tools, resources, or other context for that client to use.
