Most banner automation is data-driven design—not AI inventing a new picture each time. If you need new artwork, generate or select that artwork as a separate step, then place it inside the controlled template.
The right workflow depends on who supplies the content and who needs to edit the result: use an API for an application or high-volume process, a workflow trigger for a no-code publishing flow, an AI-image step when the artwork itself must vary, or an embedded editor when your users should make their own designs.
What “automatic banner generation” means
There are two different jobs that are often described with the same phrase:
- Render variations from a template: Keep the layout, logo, fonts, and brand colors fixed while replacing fields such as a headline, offer, product photo, background color, or destination-specific message. This is the usual approach for repeatable campaigns and personalized banners.
- Generate artwork with AI: Create a new visual from a prompt, optionally using a reference image, then use it in a banner design. This changes the artwork as well as—or instead of—the copy.
You can combine them: generate or select the artwork, then pass it and the current text into a template renderer. That separation gives the brand layout a stable structure while allowing the visual asset to change.
Bannerbear describes its service as one that “auto generates images and videos.” Its V5 API reference documents templates, workflows, assets, instant URLs, and an AI image-generation endpoint. These are vendor-documented capabilities, not an independent comparison of output quality. See the Bannerbear V5 API reference.
Choose a workflow before designing the template
| Approach | Best fit | Evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Template plus API | An application or publishing system needs many consistent, data-driven variations. | Template control, output formats, latency and volume limits, integration effort, and total cost. |
| Template plus workflow trigger | A marketing or publishing team wants content changes to trigger image creation without building a full custom integration. | Available connectors, trigger reliability, review steps, quotas, and who maintains the workflow. |
| AI artwork plus template | The visual artwork must change, not only the copy or offer. | Prompt and reference-image controls, current model and credit availability, brand consistency, and review requirements. |
| Embedded editor | Your website or product lets customers or visitors customize their own banners. | SDK access, editing boundaries, user flow, saving and export process, and licensing. |
These are selection criteria, not benchmark results. Bannerbear documents template automation and APIs; Adobe documents an embedded editor and content-creation workflows. The reviewed documentation does not establish a head-to-head winner.
Use an API for a repeatable application workflow
An API is a good fit when your application already has the data and can decide when a render should happen. For example, a promotion record can supply a campaign title, offer text, image URL, and theme values. Your system submits those values for a particular template, receives or retrieves the rendered asset, checks it, and then publishes it through the site’s normal asset pipeline.

Bannerbear’s current reference is labeled V5. Its separate API quick start and examples show V2 request patterns, so do not copy an old example’s endpoint or payload into a current integration without checking the V5 reference. Model choices, API details, and credit costs can change; consult the live reference for the current request fields and limits.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse a workflow trigger when content lives in a publishing tool
A no-code workflow can watch for a new or changed record and pass its fields into a template-rendering step. Bannerbear’s product materials identify integrations including WordPress, Airtable, Notion, Ghost, and Zapier, but connector availability and setup can change. Confirm the current support and trigger behavior with the vendor before designing a process around a particular connector. Add a human approval step if an incorrect offer, image, or date could reach the live site.
Use an embedded editor when the visitor is the designer
An embedded editor solves a different problem from background automation: it gives a user an interface for changing a design. Adobe’s Express Embed SDK guide documents embedding editing experiences, quick actions, modules, and templates; the guide says it was last updated July 1, 2026. Adobe’s SDK overview describes image generation, template customization, and API-based content workflows. Check current eligibility, SDK access, and licensing in Adobe’s documentation before committing to an implementation.
Build the reusable banner template
- Define where the image will appear. Record the page placement, the intended dimensions, whether it must crop on mobile, and whether you need separate desktop and mobile variants. There is no universal banner size established by the reviewed vendor documentation; choose dimensions for the actual slot and test the site’s responsive behavior.
- List the fields that change. Common fields include headline, supporting copy, offer, call-to-action text, image URL, and sometimes a background or accent color. Keep fields limited to what the design can safely accommodate.
- Design fixed brand elements. Set the logo position, typography, color palette, margins, and image container. Use named text and image layers so the integration can target them reliably. Leave enough room for longer copy rather than designing only for the shortest example.
- Set crop-safe areas. Keep essential words, faces, logos, and calls to action away from edges where responsive layouts may crop them. If the site uses different aspect ratios, create deliberate variants instead of assuming one image will crop well everywhere.
- Choose the output and publishing path. Bannerbear says generated images are returned as JPG and PNG, with PDF available on request. Select the format according to the site’s asset pipeline, then decide where the resulting file or URL will be stored and how the page will reference it.
Bannerbear’s V5 API accepts pixel width and height for template output. Its AI-image endpoint documents aspect-ratio choices. The vendor documentation does not prescribe dimensions for every website placement, so treat these as implementation controls—not a universal size recommendation.
Connect the content and render a banner
A robust integration keeps content selection, rendering, review, and publishing as distinct steps. The high-level flow is:
Recommended Free Tools
- Read a content record. Get the approved copy, destination, image asset, and any campaign or locale fields from your application, CMS, spreadsheet, or workflow.
- Validate inputs before rendering. Check required fields, image availability, text length, and whether the record is approved. Fail early instead of generating a polished image with missing or stale content.
- Submit modifications for a template. Map each input to its named text or image layer and request a render using the current API specification. Use the current V5 reference for exact endpoint syntax, authentication, payload shape, asynchronous behavior, and limits; the V2 examples page is useful for understanding the modification concept, not as a V5 code recipe.
- Handle completion explicitly. Follow the response or workflow state described by the current vendor API. Do not assume the render is ready immediately if the selected operation is asynchronous. Save the returned asset reference with the source record and template/version identifier so you can trace what was published.
- Inspect before publishing. Check the actual rendered file at target breakpoints, then send approved output to the site’s normal asset pipeline. Keep a fallback image or retain the existing banner if generation or review fails.
Bannerbear’s quick-start page includes JSON modification examples and a collection flow for generating a set from different templates, while its current reference covers the V5 interface. For a production implementation, use the current API reference for precise, runnable request code rather than adapting V2 syntax by guesswork.
Add AI-generated artwork only when it helps
If the campaign requires a new visual, generate that asset first, review it, and then insert it into the banner template as an image. Bannerbear’s V5 reference documents an AI image-generation endpoint with a prompt, model, aspect-ratio parameter, and optional reference image. Model availability and credit costs are changeable, so verify those values in the current reference before estimating volume or building prompts around a particular model.
AI artwork is not a substitute for layout constraints or editorial review. A generated image can have an unsuitable crop, visual inconsistency, or content that conflicts with the offer. Keep text and essential brand elements in controlled template layers rather than relying on generated lettering. Review rights and usage terms for each artwork source before publishing.

Quality checks before the image goes live
- Text fit: Inspect the longest expected headline and offer. Look for clipped text, awkward line breaks, and a call to action that becomes too small.
- Crop and responsiveness: View the rendered banner at the target desktop and mobile placements. Confirm focal points and essential copy remain visible after the site applies its own crop.
- Legibility: Check contrast between text and background, including any image variation introduced by the workflow.
- Brand consistency: Verify logo placement, colors, font treatment, and image style across a batch rather than reviewing only one output.
- Content correctness: Confirm dates, prices, offers, locale, spelling, destination, and approval status against the source record.
- Asset rights: Confirm you are permitted to use uploaded, linked, stock, or AI-generated imagery in the intended context.
- Failure behavior: Decide what the site displays if a render is delayed, rejected, or unavailable. Avoid replacing a valid live banner with a broken image URL.
These are practical publishing safeguards; the vendor documentation does not guarantee that a template or generated output will pass them automatically.

Estimate workload from the number of content changes and the number of variants each change creates. A single update rendered for multiple templates, locales, or placements can mean multiple image jobs. Check the current service’s rate, volume, credit, and storage terms before projecting spend; the reviewed sources do not establish a stable price or quota that applies to every plan.
For reliability, avoid rendering the same unchanged content repeatedly when the workflow can detect whether relevant fields have changed. Store the render reference and source version, set a clear retry policy for transient failures, and route persistent errors to a review queue. For time-sensitive campaigns, generate and approve assets before the scheduled launch instead of depending on a last-second render. Finally, make publishing idempotent: if a trigger is delivered twice, it should not accidentally publish duplicate campaign records or overwrite a newer approved banner with an older render. Keep an audit trail linking the source content, template version, generated asset, and approval decision.
Troubleshooting common automation failures
The output has missing text or the wrong image
Check that the integration’s field names match the template’s named layers, that the source record contains the expected values, and that the image URL can be fetched by the rendering service. Compare the submitted data with the current API’s documented modification fields. A successful request alone does not prove that the intended layer was changed.
The headline is clipped or unreadable
Test a record containing the longest realistic copy. Increase the text area, adjust the layout, define safe copy limits, or create a separate template for unusually long language. Review the final rendered file at the actual site placement; the website may crop it differently from the template preview.
The workflow creates no image after a content update
Check whether the trigger watches the field that changed, whether the record meets any approval or status condition, and whether the workflow run reports a failed or pending render. Confirm connector availability and behavior in the current vendor documentation rather than assuming an older integration example still applies.

The integration fails after copying an example
Verify that the example and your account use the same API version. Bannerbear’s examples page uses V2 patterns, whereas its current reference is V5. Rebuild the request from the current reference’s authentication and payload instructions instead of merely changing a version label.
The design looks inconsistent across generated artwork
Keep layout and brand elements in fixed template layers, and constrain how generated imagery is selected or reviewed. If the result still varies too much, use approved image-library assets for the campaign and reserve AI generation for cases where novel artwork is worth the additional review.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API—not a banner design or image-generation service. It can help you capture a rendered webpage to inspect how a published banner appears in context. Its API accepts one GET request with a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. See ScreenshotNeo and the API documentation for current request options.
For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Frequently asked questions
Can the same template support several languages?
It can if the layout accommodates the longer copy and any font or character requirements. Test each locale’s actual strings and create separate variants when one layout cannot remain legible across them.
Should I generate banners when a page loads?
Usually it is safer to generate and validate assets when their source content changes, then have the page use the approved result. On-demand generation adds a dependency to the visitor’s page load; use it only when your rendering service, latency, and failure behavior meet the page’s requirements.
Quick Recap
Can generated files be PDFs?
Bannerbear says its generated images are JPG and PNG, with PDF available if requested. Confirm the current API’s output behavior for your chosen operation in the V5 reference.
