You can download a YouTube thumbnail without downloading the video. Extract the video’s ID, place it in YouTube’s image URL pattern, open the resulting image, and save it. For the largest standard image, start with https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg. Because YouTube does not provide that size for every upload, keep fallback names such as sddefault.jpg, hqdefault.jpg, mqdefault.jpg, and default.jpg ready.
The fastest method: turn the video URL into an image URL
- Copy the YouTube video link. It may be a regular watch URL, a
youtu.beshort link, a Shorts link, or an embed link. - Extract the video ID. In a watch URL, it is the value after
v=. In a short, Shorts, or embed URL, it is in the path. - Build the thumbnail address. Replace
VIDEO_IDinhttps://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg. - Open the image URL in a browser. Right-click it (or press and hold on a phone) and choose the browser’s image-save or download command.
The same path works with the commonly used host https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/VARIANT.jpg. The host is different, but the ID and variant name are used in the same way.

Ignore everything after the ID, such as &list=, &start=, or other tracking parameters. Do not include the question mark, ampersand, or slash in the ID itself.

The dimensions in the table are typical values, not a promise for every upload. YouTube documents maxres as available only for some videos, and dimensions can vary by resource and upload. If the max-resolution address does not return the expected image, try sddefault.jpg, then hqdefault.jpg, mqdefault.jpg, and default.jpg.
Save the image on desktop, Android, or iPhone
Windows, macOS, and Linux
- Paste the completed image URL into the address bar and load it.
- Right-click the image.
- Choose Save image as (the wording differs slightly by browser).
- Keep the
.jpgextension unless you deliberately convert the file in an image editor.
Android
- Open the image URL in Chrome or another browser.
- Touch and hold the image.
- Choose Download image or the equivalent command.
iPhone and iPad
- Open the URL in Safari.
- Touch and hold the image.
- Choose Save to Photos or Download Linked File, depending on the iOS version and browser.
If a browser displays the image inside a page instead of offering a save command, open the image in a new tab first, then use the image menu.

This standalone script uses Python’s standard library. It extracts IDs from watch, short, Shorts, and embed links, tries the largest candidate first, and writes the first response it can download.

}Use Node.js 18 or newer so the built-in fetch API is available. The script intentionally saves the variant name in the filename, which makes later quality checks and replacements easier.
Use the YouTube Data API when you need the actually available size
A fixed filename is convenient, but an automated system should not assume that maxresdefault.jpg exists. The YouTube Data API’s video resource exposes a snippet.thumbnails object. Each available entry can include a URL, width, and height, under the names default, medium, high, standard, and maxres.
- Request the video’s
snippetdata by ID through the YouTube Data API. - Read the keys that are present in
snippet.thumbnails; do not assume every key exists. - Choose the available entry with the dimensions or quality your workflow requires.
- Download the URL returned by the API and store its width and height alongside the file.
This approach gives code control over an actually returned URL instead of guessing a filename. It also lets you preserve the dimensions supplied by YouTube, which may differ from the typical values in the table above.

Troubleshooting common failures
The URL shows an error or a blank image
- Check that the ID contains no trailing punctuation, query parameter, or slash.
- Try the
i.ytimg.comhost with the same path. - Move from
maxresdefault.jpgthrough the fallback list. Max-resolution imagery is not provided for every video.
The downloaded file is much smaller than expected
You may have received default.jpg or another fallback. Check the filename and inspect the pixel dimensions. The documented dimensions are typical rather than guaranteed, so use the API when exact dimensions matter.
The wrong video appears
Re-extract the ID from the original link. For watch URLs, use only the v parameter; a playlist ID in list is not the video ID. For Shorts and embeds, use the path segment after /shorts/ or /embed/.
The script works for one link but not another
Confirm that your parser handles the URL family involved. A youtu.be link stores the ID in the first path segment, while a watch link stores it in a query parameter. Also pass the full URL as one shell argument by quoting it, since ampersands have special meaning in many shells.
The image is old or does not match a recent video change
Thumbnail URLs identify a generated image associated with the video; they are not a guarantee that a creator’s current artwork will be available immediately. Fetch the URL again and, for an automated workflow, query the API’s returned thumbnail object so your stored URL and dimensions reflect the current response.

Downloading is not the same as having reuse rights
Saving a thumbnail gives you a local copy; it does not automatically give you permission to republish it. Before placing the image on a website, in advertising, in a report, or in another video, obtain the creator’s permission or confirm a license or other lawful basis for reuse.
YouTube’s thumbnail policy says prohibited or misleading imagery can be removed, and repeated violations can lead to strikes or termination. A technically successful download therefore does not settle whether publication is allowed.

Batch naming and organization
For multiple videos, save files as VIDEO_ID_VARIANT.jpg, for example abc123_maxresdefault.jpg. Keep the original video URL, the resolved image URL, the variant name, and the downloaded dimensions in a small CSV or database row. That record makes it clear which source produced each asset and lets you replace a fallback if a larger variant becomes available later.
